Having announced in Q4 2013 an expansion to its finance offering within the commercial vessel sector, Lombard’s dedicated marine division has reported increased investment activity in the sector as operators equip themselves

to capitalise on the improved economic climate.

Ian Braham, Head of Lombard Marine Finance, says, “Since the enhancement to our commercial sector product, Lombard

LOMBARD MARINE FINANCE SEES UPTURN IN INVESTMENT INTEREST FROM COMMERCIAL VESSEL SECTOR

has become increasingly recognised as an important funder for commercial vessels. We are keen to support UK businesses operating in this sector and as a measure of our commitment we have expanded our offering on commercial vessels.

“At Lombard Marine Finance we provided funding throughout the economic downturn and continue to do so as the recovery takes hold and operators start to update their fleets. Having made an additional £100m available for the sector, we continue to support businesses with their expansion plans.”

The division’s commercial customers include operators in the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors, as well as operators of island ferries, tugs and excursion vessels.

Specialist Marine Services (SMS) Towage Limited, one of Lombard’s customers, has expanded its fleet by adding a new modern vessel using a marine mortgage facility that has been tailored to its specific needs.

Paul Escreet, owner of SMS Towage comments, “Through Lombard’s combined finance and marine expertise they helped us fund the new vessel which supported our growth plans.”

“Using asset finance to fund vessels provides greater financial flexibility and allows commercial organisations to free up cash to invest elsewhere within the business to support growth and expansion plans,” Ian explains.

Ian concludes, “Many of our customers have already recognised the benefits offered by funding vessels through marine finance. Our vessel funding facilities are very accessible and also provide an additional credit line. As the recovery of the economy becomes more evident, we are seeing commercial vessel businesses increasing their investment in marine assets.”

Craig Group Turnover Up by £23 million in 80th Year

Aberdeen head-quartered global shipping and energy services firm, Craig Group, has marked its 80th anniversary with strong performance announced today as its accounts are lodged with Companies House.

The privately owned, family-run business, now employing the fourth generation of the Craig family, has reported turnover of £146.8 million with operating profits of £17.4 million for the year ending 30 April 2013. These are up on the previous year when turnover was £123.3 million and profits were £15.2 million.

The group, whose core activities are the provision of offshore support, ROV survey, emergency response and rescue vessels (ERRVs) and oilfield procurement, provides employment for 1,062 people, 925 of which are mariners crewing the group’s fleet of 37 vessels.

Capital expenditure in the year was £37.4 million of which £27.8 million was spent on the continued modernisation of the fleet of emergency response and rescue vessels.

Craig Group chairman and managing director, Douglas Craig, said: “These results reflect our continued strong performance in our core areas of shipping and oilfield procurement. Our considerable capital expenditure in new tonnage to ensure the safest and most modern fleet and investment in new global bases for CIS have consolidated our market leading positions in these areas. We are also generating the cash flows required to sustain growth and new employment in the future. We are particularly proud of these results in our 80th year – a significant milestone for any company but a major achievement for a privately-owned, family-run business.”

The Craig Group fleet is operated by group division, North Star Shipping, who saw its turnover increase by over 15% to £92.6 million. Two new ERRVs were completed within the financial year with a further two new vessels to be delivered during 2014. .

Mr Craig added: “Through continuous investment in our fleet and our people, we are visibly demonstrating our commitment to clients with a service that is driven by safety and quality.

“Our investment of £230 million since 2003 in new vessels has ensured we have the largest and youngest British wholly owned fleet engaged in the UK offshore industry. This has enabled us to win new contracts and retain existing ones as oil and gas operators are rightly demanding the best vessels and crews to support operations in the North Sea.

“The opening of new bases for CIS in Poland and Ghana while bolstering our existing operations in Cape Town and Houston has significantly extended our global reach helping us secure

FAMILy-RUN SHIPPINg AND ENERgy BUSINESS REPORTS STRONg gROWTH

new business, increase our buying power and offer greater efficiencies to customers.”

During the year, the group paid dividends of £3 million for the first time in three years. Directors’ remuneration totalled £1.24 million with the highest paid director’s emoluments standing at £500,000.

The group donated £374,000 to various charities and local causes in 2012. This includes the on-going donations, together totalling £2 million, to Robert Gordon’s College and the University of Aberdeen’s new library as well as one-off contributions to Friends of Anchor, Aberdeen International Youth Festival and other charities in Africa and the US.

The Craig Group remains one of Scotland’s top 100 companies and in the top 20 of offshore service companies in the North Sea. Its divisions operate in Europe, Africa and the US in the areas of offshore support, ROV survey, emergency response and rescue vessels, oilfield supplies and leisure.

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is the latest organisation to join the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) as a Corporate Marine Partner; and involvement with the initiative has had an immediate effect.

This new partnership has already seen over 400 UKHO people enrolled as IMarEST members. Membership supports their Career Level Framework (CLF) and enhances the professional and technical development of UKHO staff.

“This is a key partnership, and enables us to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring our technical specialists are of the highest calibre in the world,” explains Paul Fothergill, UKHO’s CLF Manager. “Supporting our employees and enabling them to work towards Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech) status is something we’re keen to develop and showcase with our existing clients and partners. Encouraging over 400 of our UK-based team to join the Institute has proved highly successful; we know they will reap benefits from taking this first decisive step.”

In exploring the benefits of joining the Marine Partners initiative UKHO, as one of the very best places in the world to train to become an expert in cartographic and allied skills, was eager to demonstrate the quality of their staff, and their eagerness to invest in each of them and support their career framework at every level as they work towards, and benefit from, internationally recognised professional qualifications that the IMarEST offers.

IMarEST virtual library and associated technical information is of interest to the majority of these new members, as is the ability to input into IMarEST Special Interest Groups and IMarEST technical conferences and profit from them. And, running throughout is UKHO’s need to have their staff professionally recognised, and to see them benefiting from continuing professional development (CPD) programmes.

“We’re seeing a growing number of organisations invest in the professional development of their staff,” says David Loosley, Chief Executive of IMarEST. “This is another example of how the Institute’s Initial and Continuing Professional Development programmes enable organisations, such as the UK Hydrographic Office, to further develop their staff, and something that the IMarEST is delivering globally and on a daily basis.”

The UKHO has joined a growing list of partners which includes the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, BP Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, Class NK, ABS and Plymouth University.

Corporate Marine Partnerships are customised packages and range from offering bulk membership and professional development, promotional profile in international markets, accreditation of training courses, to the production of workshops and online training. Guy Platten, Chief Executive of the UK Chamber of Shipping said:“Despite strong competition, continued economic uncertainty and extreme weather events, these figures show how resilient the ferry sector is.“After a difficult few years, the rise in passengers is testament to the hard work of ferry companies who had the courage to invest in new ships and extra onboard amenities through the economic crisis. But there is still a great deal to do if the ferry sector’s recovery is to be sustained. The Government needs to pay close attention to industry concerns over extended queues at UK Border Control. The average waiting time at Calais last summer was 90 minutes and on some occasions passengers have been left waiting for several hours. This is clearly unacceptable and could deter repeat business. If the Government wants these vital services to thrive, then the burdensome and bureaucratic processes of the UK Border Control need to be reviewed as a matter of urgency.”

4% RISE IN FERRy PASSENgERS DESPITE UK BORDER CONTROL THREAT

The UK Chamber of Shipping has welcomed new statistics showing that the number of people using ferries to travel to the continent has risen sharply in the past year. The annual ‘sea passenger statistics’ from the Department for Transport, released this morning, show:

• The number of short sea international ferry journeys increased by 4% to 20.5 million following 2 years of decline. • Dover remained the busiest UK sea port, carrying 12.7 million short sea international ferry passengers. This was a 7% annual increase but remained 20% lower than 10 years previously.

• In 2012 more passengers travelled internationally via the Channel Tunnel than ferries for the first time. However, in 2013, ferries accounted for 1.7 million (9%) more international journeys than the Channel Tunnel.

• Passenger traffic on domestic sea crossings has steadily declined over the last decade. The number of passengers travelling by ferry from Great Britain to Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands increased to 2.1 and 0.4 million respectively.

Seaway Powell Marine, one of the leading British engineering companies specialising in the design and manufacture of marine hydraulic systems, has announced the successful build of its first VICTORY Series actuator at its manufacturing facility in Dorset, UK.

Chris Oswald, Managing Director at Seaway Powell, says: “We are delighted to be able to build the VICTORY Series actuator here, as it enables the company to reduce cost and lead time for our UK customers. The VICTORY Series is the most flexible and durable ram-style actuator in our standard product portfolio and we are very proud of it. This build marks a significant milestone for the company and we look forward to increasing the volumes of VICTORY Series actuators built in the UK.”

Originally designed and built in the USA by Seaway Powell Marine’s sister companies, PT-USA and American Actuators, the VICTORY Series actuator is a rugged, flexible, low-maintenance actuator

platform for linear motion control.

Ideally suited as a clean and efficient hydraulic cylinder replacement, the VICTORY Series actuator is an electro-mechanical ram-style actuator that is a low maintenance alternative to fluid power cylinders. This style of actuators excel when there is a high concentration of airborne contaminants, when moving a load that pivots or when applying force to an already externally supported load.

The VICTORY Series actuators can be either retro-fitted or installed as part of a new mechanical system.

When combined with modern servo motors and controls, electro-mechanical actuation provides nearly infinite programmability, reduced set-up times and improved control of speed, acceleration, deceleration, force and position.

FIRST VICTORy SERIES ACTUATOR BUILT IN THE UKThe VICTORY Series actuators can be seen at the Drives and Controls exhibition, stand D162, 8-10 April 2014 at the NEC in Birmingham. For more information, or to discuss system requirements.

A NEW APPROACH TO MARINE INERTIAL SURFACE POSITIONINg

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) aided Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) have been commercially available and widely used in the marine market for many years. These systems provide very accurate position, altitude, heading, heave, pitch and roll outputs and are ideally suited to provide location and motion compensation for swathe bathymetry multi-beam sonars to accurately map the seafloor over large areas of ocean. In the event of GNSS signal loss, these systems can still produce accurate outputs via the three accelerometers and three gyroscopes that compromise the inertial measurement unit.

To date, commercially available GNSS aided INS systems in the marine market have been supplied with the precision GNSS component as an integral part of the system. This solution is a suitable approach for those users requiring a new precision positioning system; however most vessels, and certainly all survey vessels, are already equipped with a high-precision survey-grade GNSS system. This results in the user paying for, but not requiring, a secondary survey-grade positioning system as part of their

traditional GNSS aided INS solution.CodaOctopus Products have produced a new GNSS aided INS system that can be used with any existing GNSS system. This new product is called the F175TM and is unique in its concept.

Designed with ease of use in mind and targeted at the marine industry, the F175TM transforms your existing GNSS system into a full GNSS aided INS for hydrographic survey applications. In addition to extending the accuracy and feature set of your GNSS system, the F175TM greatly improves robustness to GNSS dropouts and multipath and so is ideal for harbor and coastal areas or working around large structures. The user continues to draw on their precision GNSS system for primary positioning, so existing investments in training, installation and capital costs of this system are protected.Typical applications include: bridge, dam and harbour inspection; marine construction; offshore wind turbine installation; dredging; shipping channel and environmental survey.

Upgrade your GNSS system with inertial capability using the new CodaOctopus F175TM System

Marine targeted and easy to use F175TM configuration software

The F175TM accepts a digital serial input from any commercially available GNSS system and will use this in conjunction with inertial measurements in a tightly integrated Kalman filter to produce a very accurate blended solution of position, altitude, heading and motion data. The outputs are provided in industry standard formats across Ethernet and dual serial ports and support for leading navigational

packages and intelligent heave processing (iHeaveTM) comes as standard.

In addition, to the generic F175TM product, CodaOctopus have also produced two product variants targeted specifically at the Trimble® SPS range of marine positioning systems. The F175-T1 TM is designed for use with single antenna Trimble® systems and the F175-T2 TM is designed for use with dual antenna Trimble® systems. Martin de Kievit worldwide business development manager for Trimble® Marine says “The Trimble® and CodaOctopus solutions are ideal for system integrators and users who require easy deployment and high-quality motion measurement.”

THE ACCLAIMED SOFTWARE COMPANy DEMONSTRATE THEIR IOBOX AT OCEANOLOgy INTERNATIONAL 2014 Pioneering bespoke software specialists The Acclaimed Software Company Ltd demonstrated their iObox at Oceanology International 2014 at London’s Excel in March.

The iObox is the ultimate in synchronised serial data capture and control. The system enables serial I/O (input/output) operations to be recorded or performed to the millisecond within applications on non-real-time operating systems such as Windows or Mac.

The iObox provides real time precision data capture by reporting serial data inputs and control line changes with millisecond level time tags for land surveys, navigation and detailed underwater survey with a robust watertight version for underwater ROV data acquisition. The iObox is also used for precision control. To achieve this, the iObox can issue commands (send serial data or control line operation) to be performed immediately or at a scheduled time, again accurate to the millisecond. These can be overridden on receipt of new information (such as GPS positions) to provide precise control. In this way, the iObox can provide precision control such the firing of a seismic air gun based on GPS position inputs. Other applications include controlling agricultural machinery, generating precise simulators and test harnesses and a number of other offshore precision timing applications. The Acclaimed have produced innovative software solutions such as Verify QC positioning software for VERIPOS together with Axiom & Orion visualistion software, EPOCH marine management software for OMM, ENC electronic navigation charting

software, Fanbeam laser tracking software for MDL, wind farm monopile installation software for Harkand Andrews Survey, The Acclaimed’s Jalfrezi suite of offshore survey management applications, together with positioning and guidance software for precision agriculture.

The iObox can be connected to a wireless network and controlled from mobile devices such as tablet PCs, iPhone or iPad. The absence of serial ports in modern computers is also overcome as the iObox can be installed on a network so serial communication is now a viable option from virtually any machine and anywhere in the world!

The iObox also facilitates multiple applications which can control iObox simultaneously via drivers running over the LAN. Also the iObox allows these multiple applications to access to a single device, such as a GPS receiver, simultaneously, allowing the sharing of GPS data.

The Acclaimed Software at Oceanology InternationalAt Oceanology International 2014 the pioneering software specialists will be demonstrating their GNSS offshore positioning bespoke software capabilities and their marine software systems.

The Acclaimed are inviting visitors to try out their acclaimed software, including their positioning control and monitoring systems. Visitors may also try out the Jalfrezi suite of offshore survey and vessel communication tools. Also being demonstrated on the touchscreens is ‘EPOCH’, the graphical marine management software developed for OMM (Offshore Marine Management), providing to-the-minute project status and visualisation.

They will also show their iObox, the ultimate in synchronised serial data capture and control, allowing operations to be recorded or performed to the millisecond within applications on non-real-time operating systems. The iObox is a software

system which is adaptable for vessel or subsea ROV survey and installation operations.

The Acclaimed Software Company Ltd produce innovative software solutions such as Verify QC positioning software for VERIPOS together with Axiom & Orion visualistion software, monopile installation software for Harkand Andrews Survey, ENC electronic navigation charting software, Fanbeam laser tracking software for MDL, together with positioning and guidance software for precision agriculture.

The constant demands placed on pilot boats, tugs and other dockyard and harbour vessels mean that reliability and uptime are of paramount importance for their operators. Fortunately, for many these qualities have been incorporated in the vessel design, with ZF Marine gearboxes, thrusters and control systems being specified based on their reputation for robustness and longevity. However, in the rare event of a gearbox or thruster breakdown, the primary concern immediately becomes the availability of qualified engineering help.

Acutely aware of the need to respond rapidly and effectively in such a situation, ZF offers the UK marine market 24-hour field service support.

Up to a certain range of gearboxes, ZF’s partnership network can provide assistance with diagnostics and condition assessment. For larger gearboxes and thruster installations, mobile engineering teams from ZF Services UK are equipped with the necessary training, diagnostics equipment and specialist tooling to deliver direct support around the UK. Whether it’s fixing an oil leak, solving a gearbox operating problem, or replacing a

clutch plate or drive coupling that’s required, the repair will be swiftly attended to and the vessel returned to service as soon as possible.

It’s not just ZF Marine products that benefit from this level of service provision. In addition to supporting these in applications ranging from ten to 10,000 horsepower, ZF Services UK can also bring its expertise as an acknowledged gearbox specialist to the repair, service and overhaul of any non-ZF marine transmission.

Where overhaul or a more extensive repair is required, the ZF Services UK marine workshop in Nottingham has the necessary overhead gantry lifting equipment, component inspection and cleaning areas, and workstations equipped with factory supplied special tooling. The facility also has a direct link to the ZF factory, providing rapid access to spare parts and additional technical support if required. All overhaul and repair operations are performed to the original equipment manufacturer’s specifications, using only genuine ZF parts to ensure that the risk of repeat failure is reduced to a minimum. For peace of mind, all work carried out by ZF Services UK carries a 12 month warranty.

In addition to providing round-the-clock support, ZF Services UK offers service agreements for operators of dockyard and harbour vessels, including an annual health check for gearboxes, thrusters and associated auxiliary equipment and controls. Preventive maintenance can go a long way towards avoiding the need to call on ZF’s unscheduled repair capabilities, and in the unlikely event of a fault developing, a considerable element of the cost of corrective action is already covered.

Sigmund Borgundvaag, a ship designer at Rolls-Royce, has won a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the design of offshore support vessels for more than 40 years.Sigmund designed the very first Rolls-Royce UT Design vessel, back in 1974, a design that has influenced the industry standard for oil and gas exploration ever since.Receiving the prestigious Offshore Support Journal award, at a ceremony in London last night, Sigmund said: “I am honoured to receive this award and I’m extremely proud to have played a part in developing a type of ship that has gone on to play such an important role in the oil and gas industry. It has been thrilling to have been involved in fulfilling the demanding requirements of an industry, where as one design challenge is met there is always

a new and exciting one to tackle.”Originally designed to handle the rough conditions of the North Sea, the UT has been continually adapted for a range of demanding duties where crew safety, stability, and capability are as important today as they were 40 years ago.Sigmund added: “In those early days of North Sea oil, there simply wasn’t a ship robust enough to handle the harsh conditions and heavy

seas. We drew on generations of experience from fishing these waters, and matched it with the technology needed to operate in a new type of deep-water oil field, always considering the safety of the crew and the demanding job these ships had to do. The result was a ship that pioneered the development of offshore oil and gas.”Today there are almost 800 Rolls-Royce UT Design vessels in service or on order. They operate in all the world’s major oil and gas fields, carrying out a wide range of duties including transporting cargo to and from rigs, and handling and positioning the anchors that keep floating rigs in position. The UT design also extends to subsea construction vessels, seismic survey ships and ocean-going tugs, used by a number of coast guards for emergency towing and coastal protection.John Knudsen, Rolls-Royce, President – Offshore, said: “Sigmund has made a hugely significant impact on the oil and gas industry as we know it today. Look out to sea at any major oil city in the world, whether it’s Bergen, Aberdeen or in the Gulf of Mexico, and that familiar shape of vessel you see on the horizon can trace its origin back to Sigmund’s work of more than 40 years ago. Today he is still a valued part of our ship design team, inspiring the next generation of naval architects. We congratulate him on this award, and thank him for his contribution to our industry.”The first Rolls-Royce UT Design ship to enter service, in 1974, is still operating today. The UT 704 originally named Stad Scotsman, is currently chartered to work in the oil fields off the coast of Nigeria, under the name Reliance Star 1.

A new 14 metre survey catamaran has been delivered to coastal survey specialists Osiris Projects by leading GRP workboat builders Blyth Workcats. The new boat, named Proteus of Liverpool, has been custom-built at the Blyth Workcats yard on Canvey Island, UK, to provide a fast yet stable and comfortable working platform for coastal survey work. The boat has been fitted with a range of high specification sonar and acoustic positioning systems that will provide the company’s clients with high quality survey data enhanced by the stability of the new boat.

The Proteus is the fifth vessel in the Osiris Projects fleet and has MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) category 2 approval to work up to 60 miles offshore. With a maximum design speed of 24 knots the new boat will be able to get quickly on station and commence surveying with minimum delay. The new survey boat will work primarily for oil and gas and offshore renewable clients, performing cable and pipeline pre- and post-installation route surveys around the coastline of the UK and Northern Europe.

The new vessel has been custom-built to include a moon pool to house a retractable sonar deployment system, a hydraulic A-frame and retractable transducer mounts and is capable

BLyTH WORKCAT JOINS OSIRIS PROJECTS SURVEy FLEETof operating a full spread of survey sensors. With a spacious work cabin and sleeping for four the new boat also provides a comfortable working environment for surveyors and crew with ample space for topsides survey equipment.

The boat’s draft of just 1.1-metre also makes it ideal for working in the extreme shallows encountered during precision littoral survey contracts. With propulsion provided by two Cummins QSC 8.3 500hp engines it possesses the power and maneuverability needed for safe operation in confined waters. The unique Blyth hull design also ensures exceptional handling and performance at both low and high speeds and incorporates a low drag profile ensuring excellent fuel economy.

The Blyth Workcats product range is noted for its exceptional value with highly competitive purchase prices. All are built from GRP to provide strength where it is needed and valuable weight savings wherever the design permits it. Hull lamination and construction is governed by meticulous quality control so the customer can benefit from a boat that has been built to exactly meet their needs while enabling rugged strength and reinforcement to be applied wherever it is needed. ----->

The strength yet comparatively light weight of a Blyth Workcats GRP hull also enables smaller engines to be used. This results in greater economy and higher speeds which, due to carefully designed hull profiles and chines, improve handling and sea-keeping in extreme conditions. Because GRP construction costs are significantly lower than those of metal-hulled catamarans, Blyth Workcat customers often find their budget going farther than expected. This may then make it possible to

invest in higher specification wheelhouse technology and interior accommodation than might otherwise have been possible. It is also noted that even after many years of hard use Blyth Workcats

can be maintained to keep their good looks and shrug-off minor damage so that they maintain resale value while users retain their confidence in the condition and quality of these versatile craft.

The Blyth Workcats range includes 17, 14, 12 and 10-metre catamarans that are built for a wide range of applications in addition to survey work. These can include wind farm support, passenger ferries, dive support, fishing charter or any of a wide range of workboat tasks.

Having started out almost 8 years ago, Meercat Workboats has established itself as a leading workboat builder with a particular interest in shallow draft, road transportable vessels. Their development in this niche has led to them being recognised as the world leader in road transportable workboats.

The driving principle behind the Meercat design was to create a well-engineered, user friendly and robust steel workboat; but one that didn’t have to play by the same rules as a conventional vessel. The modular design means that a Meercat can be plucked from the water, placed directly onto trailers and be despatched to its new destination where it can be launched and back to work the same day. No more slow, expensive and weather dependent sea deliveries. Of course this also means that ‘no go’ areas for most conventional workboats such as inland waterways (canals, lakes and lochs), are easily accessible for a Meercat.

This ease of transportation has led to Meercats being shipped around the globe. They easily fit onto MAFI trailers, allowing the regular RoRo shipping routes around the world to be used, making shipping quicker and cheaper. Today Meercats can be found at work in UK, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Tasmania, Norway, Sweden, France and Peru.

MEERCAT WORKBOATS SECURES TWO ORDERS FOR PORT SERVICE VESSELS FROM CONWy AND BELFAST HARBOUR AUTHORITIES

It’s worth pointing out that this versatility does not come at the expense of performance. The Meercat RT18 (18m x 8m) can carry over 50 tonnes of dry or liquid cargo and has either single or twin 40 tonne/metre cranes on deck; and being classified as MCA Workboat Code (cat 2) can venture up to 60 nautical miles from a safe haven. Meercats can be equipped with a vast array of equipment including deck winches, capstans, towing hooks, deck cranes, liquid cargo pumping systems, 3 phase generators, bow thrusters, dredging equipment, moon pools and spud legs. Internally they are fitted out to a high standard with fully equipped wheelhouses and mess rooms with galleys, toilet/shower facilities and workshops.

It’s hard to think of a marine application a Meercat can’t help with, time and again they’ve proven themselves to be invaluable for a multitude of applications over the years including: civil engineering support, cable and pipe laying, dive support, port service, dredging support, fish farming, towage, moorings & pilings, pollution response/clean-up, wind farm support, dry and liquid cargo carrying and floating crane operation.

GSS is an expanding, international company, playing an active role in marine construction and support services worldwide. Recent years have seen GSS expanding into Africa, the Middle East, Far East and Australia

Projects supported by GSS include coastal work, bridge and marine work, piers and jetties, pipe and cable laying, welding and diving support and marine piling. And although MOD contracts comprise a part of the workload, the company undertakes major civil contracts in both Britain and Europe. This includes a move into the renewable energy industry, particularly in construction support and repair and maintenance of offshore wind farms.

Its varied fleet of vessels gives GSS the capacity and versatility to offer a wide range of services, and the expertise and can-do attitude of its personnel allows it to successfully tackle challenging contracts and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.

GSS was founded in 1989 to provide high quality plant and labour to the Royal Navy and the marine construction industry and quickly proved its worth. An injection of fresh purpose was added in 2005 when the Managing Director took part in a

gSS EXPANDINg INTO AFRICA, THE MIDDLE EAST, FAR EAST AND AFRICA

management buyout which in turn led to an expansion of the fleet with bigger vessels and increased capabilities.

GSS have successfully moved into other markets and undergone significant growth, more than doubling its workforce in the past four years. With this growth as marine consultants as well as marine contractors, the company has been moving more and more into long-term, large-scale contracts, while still retaining the capacity to handle smaller one-off jobs. The organisation also boasts a quality inhouse dive team.

Internationally, GSS has supported dredging and construction operations in Sierra Leone, and currently carrying out oilfield work in Nigeria, and marine support and construction in Australia. In 2011 the company was assisting pipe-laying work in Papua New Guinea. Closer to home, the opening of an office in Holland has proved productive, with an increasing role in the Dutch, Danish and European market and penetration of the rapidly expanding market in offshore renewables in the Baltic.

Whatever the scale or location of the contract, all GSS’s projects are underwritten by the continual drive for quality which has proved such a big attraction for clients.

MARINE INTERCOM & CCTV THAT IS TRULy ‘FIT FOR PURPOSE’

AVO Marine Systems Ltd manufacture Intercom, Talkback and CCTV equipment specifically for the marine industry and it is increasingly becoming the preferred choice for new builds and refurbishments of all types of vessel, from workboats to Royal Navy warships.Their CT4 cameras have been fitted to RNLI lifeboats for many years and have proven to be extremely reliable, even in the most hazardous conditions, and they continue to be specified as standard equipment for the RNLI. Their robust yet compact design makes them an ideal unit for all types of vessel and they are also widely used on ferries, super-yachts, tugs,

hovercraft, wind farm support vessels and numerous others throughout the world. However, it is their intercom systems that have more recently become so popular, mainly because they are so adaptable to any type or size of vessel.

The TC4000 can be used as a simple 2-station system, say from wheelhouse to deck or engine room, right up to a complex, multi-zone system with multiple masters and operational groups, integrated into one overall system, as supplied to the Indonesian Navy for a training facility. There is even an all-in-one solution for a small vessel, incorporating a small PA system, with integral fog and general alarms. As the TC4000 became increasingly popular in the super-yacht market, AVO Marine responded by developing a stainless steel version, the TC4000S, with stylishly re-designed panels, which has already become very popular with naval architects, owners and shipyards alike.A totally new system, the TC2000, is to be

released later this year, offering a simple ‘Talkback’ solution for those who do not need all the intercom functions and capabilities of the TC4000.

“We are a small company” says John Wheeler, Managing Director of AVO Marine, “which enables us to react quickly to customer feedback and suggestions. Some of our resellers and installers told us how pleased their clients were with the sound quality of the TC4000, and they themselves were delighted with the simplicity and ease of installation, but that the system sometimes offered more features than some of their clients

needed, therefore they were having to use a different make, even though the sound quality was not so good. This was obviously something that we were keen to put right, so we decided to invest in a new system to cater for those clients”.

The TC2000 looks set to bring even more projects AVO Marine’s way and put this UK SME in an even better position in the international marine market. For more information, contact: [email protected] or visit www.avomarine.com

Already a distributor for many of the world’s leading manufacturers of marine electronic navigation equipment, Mantsbrite recently announced its appointment as a distributor for SCAN Antenna A/S. The agreement covers the distribution within the UK and Ireland of all maritime antennas made by SCAN Antenna A/S.

Set up in 1947, SCAN Antenna A/S is a Danish technology-focused company that supplies high quality precision antennas to a wide range of markets world-wide; some of its customers are the world’s most advanced market-leaders. The products fit into marine or land based radio communication systems which are life-lines for users; quality is of the essence.

MANTSBRITE APPOINTED DISTRIBUTOR FOR SCAN ANTENNA

More than 1 million marine antennas have been produced at the Danish factory, but since production has thus far been primarily under private labels, the company is relatively unknown in the UK market. This is due to change, with Scan Antenna now producing a full range of maritime antennas and mounts to be sold under its own brand name.

Mantsbrite’s David Ash says: “I’m delighted that we have been appointed as a distributor for SCAN Antennas. The company has an excellent pedigree within the industry having manufactured antennas for over 65 years for many prestigious OEM clients. SCAN’s VHF & AIS antennas are the perfect complement to our portfolio of electronic navigation equipment.”

When Mantsbrite became the sole UK distributor of the David Clark Marine Wireless Headset Communications Systems in 2012, one of the first users was Tidal Transit, a fast growing North Norfolk company providing a new generation of personnel transfer vessels for use by offshore wind farm developers.

Some years earlier. Tidal Transit had realised that offshore wind farm development off the east coast of England was going to create a huge demand for personnel transfer vessels [PTVs] to transport mechanics and electricians from shore to the offshore wind farm sites. Accordingly, in 2011, its directors Leo Hambro and Adam Wright made a considerable investment in what then was primarily a fishing trip business, commissioning their first two state-of-the-art, purpose designed and built vessels from a Spanish vessel manufacturer.

They selected Mantsbrite, to firstly fit out ‘Ginny Louise’, and very shortly after ‘Eden Rose’, with the best navigational aids available to enable the vessels to function safely and efficiently in the unfriendly waters of the North Sea.

INNOVATIVE MARINE COMMUNICATIONS FOR NORTH SEA SAFETyMantsbrite is a renowned UK distributor of electronic navigation and communication equipment, supplying high quality products from a wide range of world class suppliers. Managing Director David Ash said: “One of the key factors in operating safely at sea is clear and interference-free communication, so I was delighted when David Clark launched its new Marine Wireless Headset Communications System. Having thoroughly tested these headsets, I knew they would be ideal for crews operating vessels in the demanding environment of the North Sea. They are rugged, manufactured from marine grade components, and enable users to enjoy clear, crisp reception within a range of 100m. Being hands-free, they greatly enhance mobility as there is no need for crew members to be tethered to the vessel.”

Tidal Transit’s Leo Hambro comments: “These Communications Systems have been invaluable. When we carried out a man overboard rescue’ exercise recently, the crew member on deck was able to move freely, giving very clear instructions to the crew on the bridge, thus avoiding accidental harm to the ‘man’ in the water.

Fortunately, we haven’t experienced such an incident, but with the David Clark wireless system, we are confident that our crew-to-crew communications can make a huge difference in both normal and extraordinary circumstances.”

‘Ginny Louise’ and ‘Eden Rose’ have been in continuous use on the Greater Gabbard and Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farms since their arrival in the UK. “Mantsbrite will be fitting out our third vessel, the ‘Tia Elizabeth’, which is expected to reach these shores in May 2013,” says Leo Hambro, “and David Clark wireless headsets are part of the equipment specification.”

Established in 1964, Mantsbrite now has an established 175 strong dealer network throughout the UK and Ireland.

nery The demand for more comprehensive

and extensive machinery packages has increased over the years within the marine industry. In order to respond to this demand, the marine equipment manufacturer Hatlapa and its daughter company Triplex AS have created a deck machinery package aimed specifically at vessels which operate in the demanding conditions in the offshore industry. Hatlapa is known for its high quality and reliable marine equipment in all areas of shipbuilding and now together with Triplex, the two companies are able to offer specific solutions which combine the expertise within the companies.

The two companies worked together already prior to the purchase of Triplex in 2011. The history of the two companies extends back to 1990s and a cooperation of supplying winches and net handling systems to the Chilean fishing industry. The compatibility of the two companies is even more evident in recent times as the launch of a new Offshore Package will take place in late June 2013.

The Offshore Package combines the expertise of the companies into one, fully compatible and customizable package. The offshore specific equipment from both companies is now a collective list of 23 elements that can be tailored to a specific package depending on the requirements of the customer.

Hatlapa is known for their range of winches and especially the AHT winches, which are available in low or high pressure hydraulic drives to suit the customers’ needs with power, as well as size wise

in single, double or even triple waterfall designs. The Combined Anchor-Mooring and Mooring winches, secondary winches as well as the Research Winches are also supplied fully customized if requested and have stood the test of time and are known for their durability and reliability in extreme conditions.

All winches are fully customizable and have a variety of additional extras to make the operating of the winches safer, as well as increase the lifespan of the equipment. Additional equipment such as chain stoppers and capstans for the winches can now be incorporated into the package. A variety of servicing plans are also available.

Triplex AS has been working in the offshore sector for centuries and their cranes are a testament to the company’s expertise within the fishery and offshore sector. In order to branch out more into the offshore sector, Triplex had designed a variety of specialist Multi Deck Handlers.

The Multi Deck Handlers can be divided into two categories, for AHT vessels and for PSVs. The AHT MDH package includes:

· Lifting and pulling capacities of 42t and 30t over the whole deck

· Anchor handling operations performed with remote control

· Camera systems and floodlights

· Heavy capacity lifting manipulator crane

· Separate winch with 22t lifting capacity

· Manipulator designed for “fine” operations

· Separate wire clamp

eck Machinery

The MDH for the PSVs include

· 20t lifting capacity

· Loading and offloading containers in port

· Moving and storing containers offshore

· Tandem lifts of pipes and large items

Both packages can be enhanced with a variety of additional equipment such as wires, buoys, clamps and anchors.

As safety in any situation is imperative, especially in rough or extreme conditions, the package also includes a variety of safety options. For the HATLAPA winches, a quick release option called SLIPSAFE is incorporated, this means that there is no claw clutch and the chain can be released through a slipping clutch with minimum break force.

Triplex also offers a variety of safety measurements taking into consideration that anchor and other chains on the deck can cause major safety hazards. The best know safety measure are the Shark Jaws, this was invented by Triplex in 1983 and is a unique way of handling chains and wires. This option automatically positions the chain or wire in the right way on deck and allows for a more secure way

of handling on-deck chains and ropes. Additional guiding tools are guide pins, stop pins, wire clamps, rope friction stoppers, tensioners and tractioners.

A new addition to the safety equipment offered by Triplex is a Load Measurement System (LMS). This system is incorporated into the Shark Jaws and it measures the active load which is displayed on a monitor on the Bridge. The system will also be able to give out an alarm, if the load is about to, or is exceeding the defined safety perimeters. The LMS can also be used to unwind and untangle chains on deck. The operator is able to connect the chain from the winch to the Shark Jaw and thus eliminate any spin and

make for a safer operating environment.

As household name in the Norwegian market, Triplex has recently secured a contract from BOA Offshore. The order entails a Tripelx MDH 42, as well as Shark Jaws, Vertical Guide Pins and a Spooling Block.

Offshore Sales Manager Even Kippernes is excited about the cooperation: “This is the ultimate deck equipment for anchor handlers. The Triplex MDH can lift, move and park heavy anchors up to 42 tons and pull heavy chains and grappling hooks weighting up to 30 tons.” The delivery for this order is scheduled for the beginning of 2014.

The concept: To see the entire route of a dive umbilical has been identified as a significant contribution to safety.

PSL have achieved this with a unique side emitting 5mm diameter fibre that carries no electrical power, only light up to 150m in length. The fibre is spirally wound into the umbilical thereby creating a flexible continuous line of light from a low power LED light source which can be either steady state or flashing.

The initial testing and evaluation took place at The Underwater Centre in Scotland, their Open Days contributed significantly in raising the profile of the illuminated umbilical concept

Operational experience with LIGHTPATH has been gained in the North Sea through collaboration, support and advice from Bibby Offshore, Helix Well Ops UK Ltd and Boskalis Offshore Subsea Services operating in both Saturation and Wet Bell systems. The positive feed-back provided and photographic evidence of performance supports LIGHTPATH as an innovation that helps de-risk diving operations; a major industry concern.

LIGHTPATH enhances safety for all parties operating in the subsea environment. This has been proven for the individual diver, his colleagues in the water and the bell-man. ROV pilots are aware of the route of the umbilical which minimises the risk of collision and helps detect cases of dive umbilicals snagging on structures. LIGHTPATH can be used to identify the individual diver through choice of light output colour, Green/Blue/White.

LIGHTPATH side emitting 5mm diameter flexible fibre rope injected from a single source LED supplies a continuous line of light typically 70m in length with the fibre simply wound into the lay of the umbilical. The SLS5000 unit operates over the 12 to 24V DC range with an optional non-penetrating on/off/flash switch.

The colours adopted are Green and Blue as they penetrate most efficiently in water with White as a third alternative. The Green system operates near the peak eye response, the optimum

wavelength for the human eye, and provides extraordinary output from minimum power, typically <7W, target life of 5years continuous operational use and projected maintenance free life.

Subsea professionals have identified a number of applications including the lighting of tool boxes, tether lines and restraint systems including the golden gate. ROV pilots highlighted the lighting of manifold valves, control panels and docking or garage guidance systems. Salvage divers identified guide routes into wrecks utilising a continuous line of light and marine archaeologists are looking at controlled site access and ‘grid location’.

For non-submerged operation PSL have developed a 4th colour system, Red.

Marine applications to enhance operational safety on deck include guard rails, open hatches, temporary work areas and below deck identifying egress routes.

Offshore Wind safety applications identified as tower access lighting and ship personnel transfer systems; PSL are working with SE Offshore Wind Expert Support programme and BVG Associates.

PSL will continue to develop and promote equipment that will contribute to enhancing the safety of those in the marine, offshore, dive and subsea community with the continued support of operators.

Comment courtesy of The Underwater Centre ‘We were delighted to be able to provide PSL with the opportunity to test their illuminated rope in the controlled environment of our pier, using divers in training. Our onshore tank, which has viewing panels on all sides, also provided the perfect location for a demonstration of how the light rope works, to potential clients. It’s a very important piece of new technology, which we can see has significant benefits to commercial divers, and ROV pilot techs, when working offshore or in poor light.’ General Manager, Steve Ham

Comments courtesy of Helix Well Ops UK Ltd. In low viz situations, it’s a real safety bonus when the divers can, at a glance see the direction their umbilicals are going. We are continuously doing SIMOPS with work class ROVs & the ROV pilots have commented on how much easier it is manoeuvre around the divers umbilicals now that they are (the umbilicals) illuminated.

The umbilical really did light up really well; with the divers able to follow the umbilical all the way back to the bell. I believe this is a real step forward in the ability for better diver umbilical management & safety.

The ROVs have also commented on how much easier it is to see the Diver’s umbilical.

What is really noticeably is the way the umbilical stands out when the ROV is moving around. This has got to be a major safety feature. If it wasn’t for the light string, you wouldn’t know the umbilical was there.

Comment courtesy of Bibby Offshore On the Bibby Offshore DSVs we use different colours for each diver so there is no confusion when the divers are working close together in poor light conditions. The main benefit is that the divers can readily identify where their umbilicals are at any time, preventing potential problems with unseen snagging hazards. The ROV can also quickly check the divers’ umbilcals are completely clear before landing large items on the seabed. The divers themselves started requesting umbilical lighting quickly following the early offshore trials. This, in itself, speaks volumes. Nigel Kenrick Diving & Dive Systems Operations Manager

Comment courtesy of Boskalis Offshore Subsea Services Very nice system could be a bit brighter but for the rest excellent and helps to improve safety. Our customer made a special note on the final audit report, the note was (a good way to improve the safety of the diver under water better visible umbilical) they are even recommending using the SLS 9000 unit.

STOP IT® Pipe Repair System is ideal for repairing pipe leaks, reinforcing pipe joints, rebuilding thinning pipe walls and corrosion proofing - in virtually any situation, even underwater! It fully cures to a hard, durable repair in 30 minutes. It can be used for permanent repair to pipes or to extend the service life of piping.

The STOP IT® Pipe Repair System includes a strong knitted fiberglass tape coated with fast setting urethane resins that are water-activated. The system also includes FIX STIX ™, a steel-filled moldable epoxy that sets rock hard in only 20 minutes. It is perfect for plugging leaks, filling cracks and complex voids and offsets at couplings and fittings.

Using the STOP IT® urethane rich fiberglass tape in combination with FIX STIX™ greatly increases repair capacity. One person, with no special tools and no hot work can apply this quick in-field repair system in minutes.

The tape is supplied in its own tub in a hermetically secured pouch with the resin already impregnated, a pair of rubber globes and a plug of epoxy putting, along with an instruction manual showing step by step application of the tape. All that is required for the tape to work is to dunk it in water for 5 seconds, as the water is the catalyst required to activate the resin.

In most of the manufacturing industries STOP IT® Repair Tape is used as a temporary repair until the shutdown maintenance period arrives. In some cases, however, the product has been left as permanent. For the water industry, knowing of its leakage problems, Stop-it can be used as a permanent repair, depending on the engineer in charge.

Whether you are repairing a chemical process line or any other critical pipeline, the STOP IT® Pipe Repair System is your money saving ally in the battle against lost production costs in common situations.
