3. Applicants who are currently enrolled in an institution are asked to present their

examination results and/or assessment

notification immediately it is available.

4. Applicants who have completed overseas tertiary studies and have documents which

are not in English MUST submit Certified

English Translations as well as copies of the original documents.

5. If your academic records are not from NRCAE, UNE-NR or Southern Cross

University, consideration of your application will be affected if this University cannot make

a comparison with our standards, particularly

in relation to grades. For overseas qualifications, you should consult us or obtain

official assistance. For informal advice from

this office, write or telephone the Research Training Unit (02) 6620 3414. You may have

to leave your name and phone number for a

response. For official help, contact the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition

(NOOSR) at GPO Box 1407, Canberra ACT

2601, or telephone (02) 6240 7663. You may ask the Head of the Department,

School or Faculty in which you worked or the College director or Director of Research and

Research Training of the School you seek to

enter at Southern Cross University for a written opinion of the equivalence of your

degree to an Australian grade of Honours,

which you can attach to your application. Note that the people concerned are not

obliged to provide you with such a

certificate.

If you have a Masters degree you will assist your case by providing official evidence of:

(a) the proportion of research culminating in the thesis that you completed towards the

total requirements for the degree. Note

that not less than 50% research and thesis is usually required for entry to this

University’s PhD course;

(b) the class of pass, if any, e.g. Honours I; (c) whether you completed in minimum time.

ADMISSION:

To be admitted, applicants should normally

possess Honours I or IIA for a PhD or Honours I or II for a Masters by thesis, or equivalent

tertiary qualification. However, applicants may

be admitted on the basis that their work experience and/or published or other written

material together constitute the equivalence of

Honours at the level required. It is nevertheless the applicant’s responsibility to convince the

Higher Degrees Research Committee by

submitting all relevant details.

In addition, in the case only of Australian citizens

and those with Permanent Resident Status, applications for admission will be considered only

if a place is available and at least one of the

following criteria has been satisfied:

1. The thesis topic is compatible with the

Principal Supervisor’s research area; or

2. In the view of the Higher Degrees Research

Committee, the proposed Principal Supervisor has a demonstrably outstanding track record

in successful supervision of HDR candidates, and/or has a demonstrably outstanding

national or international track record in

research in the area of the proposed topic; or

3. The applicant has been awarded an externally

funded stipend scholarship (other than an

APA) to undertake the project, and the value of the stipend is at least equivalent to the

value of the stipend for an APA (currently

$20,007 p.a.); or

4. The applicant has completed a Qualifier at

the University which was commenced prior to 1st July, 2001. To qualify for this criterion,

an application normally should be received

within 6 months of completing the Qualifier.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:

If your undergraduate studies were not undertaken in English or if your first language is

not English, you must convince the University

that your standard of English is sufficient for you to study successfully here. You must submit:

(a) an original IELTS test result, showing a

score of 6.5 or better, including a minimum score of 6.0 in the sub-bands

(http://www.ielts.org); or (b) an original TOEFL test result showing a

score of 580

or better (min score of 237 for computer based), and a Test of Written English (TWE)

score of at least 5.0 (http://www.toefl.org).

Other evidence of ability to study in English may

be considered, and any evidence should not be

more than two (2) years old at the date of application.

For citizens of some countries, an IELTS test is

required by the Government of Australia for the

granting of a student visa. You are advised to contact the nearest Australian diplomatic mission

to clarify this http:www.immi.gov.au/wwi/index.htm)

CONSULTATION:

You must contact the Director of Research and

Research Training, the Head of School and the proposed supervisor to discuss your eligibility,

the work to be carried out and the availability of resources before submitting your application.

NOTICES TO APPLICANTS: Receipt of an application will not normally be

acknowledged until dealt with by the Committee.

ALL applicants will be notified by mail. Successful applicants will be sent an offer of

admission which will contain instructions

regarding the procedure to be followed to accept the offer of a place and complete formal

enrolment with the University.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

The following scholarships are available: Australian Postgraduate Award and

International Postgraduate Research Scholarship.
