Toourstudents:WelcometoDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureattheUniversityofMichigan.ThishandbookforDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureprovidesapracticalguidetodegreerequirements,includinginformationaboutcoursework,examinations,andthedoctoraldissertation. WithinDoctoralStudies,threemainsubfieldscurrentlystructureresearchinArchitecture:BuildingTechnology(BT),DesignStudies(DS),andHistory/Theory(HT).WhileahistoricalresearcherbasedinthehumanitiesdisciplinesofHTmayhavedifficultyfullyunderstandingworkgroundedintheengineeringprinciplesthatguideresearchinBT,architectureandthebuiltenvironmentaresharedobjectsofstudyforboth.DS,drawingfromthefieldofsocialscience,providesalinkbetweenourothersubfields.Allsharetheactivityofresearchitself—seekingoutpoorlyunderstoodorunknownconditionsofthepast,present,andfuture.Doctoralprojectsalsospansubfields,definingnewfieldsofstudywithinandbetweenourthreedesignations.Wearededicatedtopromotingthisgrowth,andtoprovidingyouwithasafehaveninwhichtobuildyourbaseofknowledge,takerisks,andconfrontchallenges.

DoctoralStudiesinArchitectureatMichiganarehousedwithinaschoolofarchitecturethatiscommittedtoresearchonmanyfronts,andwebenefitfromandcontributetoaremarkablespectrumofongoingworkinarchitecture.Withinthisspectrum,doctoralresearchprojectsarebydefinitionlong-term.Suchprojectsrelatetocurrentconcernsofarchitectureculturefromarangeofvantagepointsunitedbyanaffectivedistancefromdesignpractice.Thisaffectivedistancebenefitsthedisciplineofarchitectureasmuchasitcontributestoknowledgeofthebuiltenvironmentmoregenerally.Atthesametime,dissertationprojectsareoftenspeculativeandrisky.Theirrelevanceisattimesvisibleinnewknowledgeornewmannersofcritiquethatcanbedeployedinarchitectureimmediately.Ourresearchoftenfocusesontheinterfacebetweendisciplines,however,oronlong-termdata-intensivework.Insuchcasesitsimportancemayappearlongafterthedissertationhasbeencompleted.TaubmanCollegehoststhisheterogeneityofresearchmodes,bothimmediatelyapplicableandlong-term,withacommitmenttopluralismandopen-mindedness.

DoctoralStudiesarehousedintheTaubmanCollegeofArchitectureandUrbanPlanning.YettheinterdisciplinaryaspectofdoctoralresearchinvolvesourstudentsindepartmentsandprogramsacrosstheremarkablyrichcampusoftheUniversityofMichigan.DoctoralStudiesprovidesarchitecturestudentswithanentrypointintofieldssuchasurbanstudies,visualculturestudies,scienceandtechnology,information,history,comparativeliterature,publicpolicy,law,business,engineering,andmanyothers.DoctoralStudiesinArchitectureopenupthesefieldsandmaketheirmethodsandfindingsavailabletostudentswhowilldefineourdisciplineinyearstocome.Ourlinkstothesefields,andtointensivestudywithinarchitectureitself(whethertechnological,historical,sociological,ordesign-oriented)arecrucialtothecontinuinggrowthofthefield.Inthecourseofexploringotherdisciplinaryframeworks,ordivingdeeplyintoexistingones,webringnewmaterialbacktothearchitectureschoolcommunityforconsiderationanddebate.Wescoutnewdisciplinaryframeworks,newpotentialslatentwithinarchitecture,andpastphenomenathataddresscurrentandfutureconcerns.Weencourageyoutoparticipateinformaloutreacheffortssuchasdoctoralcolloquiaandconferences,butalsotocreatemoreinformalopportunitiesfordiscourseprovidedbytheuniversityenvironment. THEPH.D.INARCHITECTURETheDoctorofPhilosophy(Ph.D.)accommodatesinvestigationsofarchitectureandthebuiltenvironmentthatunfoldoveraspanofyears.Studentsembarkingonadoctorateconductresearchthatyieldsnewinsightsintopast,current,andfuturedevelopmentsofarchitectureandbuildingpractices.Doctoralstudypromotesindependentcriticalthinkersandresearchspecialistsacrossarangeoffieldswithintheincreasinglybroadfieldsofarchitectureandthebuiltenvironment.TheUniversityofMichigan’sPh.D.inArchitecturewasoneofonlyfoursuchprogramsintheUnitedStateswhenitwasestablishedin1968.Sincethatdate,thedegreehasevolvedinresponsetochangesinthedisciplineandtheprofession.StudiescurrentlyunderwayatMichigantestifytorapidlyshiftingdisciplinaryboundariesandincreasinglyglobaloutlooksinthefieldoverallbutparticularlyinareasinwhichourfacultyarestrong,suchasglobalmodernism,mediapracticesinarchitecture,spacesyntax,structuralmodeling,envelopedesign,andurbanhistory.Michigan’sremarkableresearchfacilitiesallowourstudentstodevelopinterdisciplinaryresearchprojectswithpartnersacrosscampus.TheHoraceH.RackhamGraduateSchoolawardsthePh.D.,generallyafterfiveorsixyearsofstudy.ThearchitectureschoolenvironmentcontinuestoprovideDoctoralStudieswitharichsupportingcontext,rangingfromrobustlectureandseminarseries,toremarkabletechnicalfacilitiesthatsupportspatialandnumericdataandglobalinformationsystemsaswellasfabricationandtestingfacilities.AbroadarrayofresourcesbeyondourhomeonNorthCampusincludesextensiveresearchlibrariesandcomputingfacilitiesthatareamongthebestinthecountry.Studentsareencouragedtoseekoutresourcesthatarenecessarytodevelopandcarryouttopicsofresearch,particularlyforthedissertation,ifanyareunavailableoncampus.OVERVIEWBecausemanyofourenteringstudentscomefromprofessionaldegreeprograms,weemphasizetheimportanceofthesubtlebutsubstantiveshiftfromdesign-basedstudioworktoresearchinmajorsubfieldsofarchitecturalpracticeandstudy.Thisshiftoftenrequiressignificantre-traininginbasicskillssuchasreading,writing,andstatistics,amongotherresearchmethods.Werequirearelativelyhighnumberofcoursecredits(40intotal),andasignificanttimecommitmenttocompletionofdegree.Fouryearsarenormallyspentinresidenceandarefullyfundedwithtuition,stipend,andbenefits.Twoadditionalyearsoftuitionbenefitallowstudentstocompletethedegreewithfellowshipsupportfromotheruniversityunitsorexternalsources.Thissupportistypicallyraisedintheirfourthandfifthyearsofstudy.Thefirsttwoyearsofthedegreearedevotedtointensivecourseworkintendedtotrainstudentsintheprincipalmethodsandmaterialsusedinoursubfields(organizedherebyfacultyspecializationasBuildingTechnology[BT],DesignStudies[DS],andHistory/Theory[HT]).Thethirdyearisspentpreparingforandpassingdoctoralexaminationsandidentifyingadissertationproject.Studentsadvancetocandidacyaftertakingtheirpreliminaryexaminations,generallybyJanuaryofthethirdyear.HTstudentsmustalsosatisfythelanguagerequirement(minimally,competenceinoneresearchlanguage)inordertoadvancetocandidacy.Attheendofthethirdyear,studentsdefendtheirdissertationproposalinapublicdefensewiththeirdissertationcommittee.Yearsfourandfiveand,ifnecessary,six,arespentinresearching,writing,anddefendingthedissertation.Duringtheinitialphaseofdissertationresearch,studentsmayspendsubstantialtimeoffcampus,supportedbyinternalandexternalfellowships.TheyoftenreturntoAnnArbortowriteuptheresultsofresearch.Thedissertationisdefendedinaformaldissertationdefense.Timetodegreevariesamongthespecializationsofourdegree,butstudentstypicallytakeatleastfiveorsixyearstocompletethedegree.[Pleaseseechartonthelastpageofthishandbook]Traininginteachingandresearchisanintegralpartofthedegree.Facultymembersworkcloselywithstudentstoprovidethemwithnecessaryteachingandresearchskills.StudentshaveopportunitiestodeveloptheirprofessionalcapacitiesasGraduateStudentInstructors(GSIs)andthroughresearchassistantshipswithfacultymembers.

MAJORANDMINORAREASOFSPECIALIZATIONEachdoctoralstudentidentifiesamajorandaminorareaofspecializationandworkswithfacultyadvisorsassociatedwiththoseareas.Theseadvisorsshouldbeidentifiedandcontactedbythemiddleofthesecondyearofcourseworkatthelatest,althoughmanystudentshaveidentifiedaprimaryadvisorbeforearrivinginAnnArbor.ThemajorisdefinedwithinoneofthethreeareasofspecializationwithinDoctoralStudies(BuildingTechnology;DesignStudies;andHistory/Theory).Theminorisadistinctsubjectareathatcomplementsthemajor.Theminorcanbeoneoftheothertwoareaswithinthedoctoraldegree,itmaylieinUrbanandRegionalPlanning,oritcanbelocatedinanotherUniversityofMichigandepartment,program,orcenter.CourseworkintheminormustbeapprovedforRackhamgraduatecredit,deemedappropriatebytheDoctoralAdvisoryCommittee,andapprovedbythemajoradvisor.

REQUIREMENTSFORTHEPH.D.Thedoctorateisawardedinrecognitionofexpertiseinaspecificareawithinthedisciplineofarchitecturebroadlyconceived,asdemonstratedthroughcoursework,thePreliminaryExamination,andsuccessfulsubmissionofadissertationthatmakesanoriginalcontributiontothefield.ThePh.D.isawardeduponcompletionoftherequirementsdetailedbelow.Therearetwokindsofrequirementsforthedoctorate:thefirstareincremental,andfollowoneanotherinsequence;thesecondarestandingrequirementsthatpertainthroughouttheyearsofdoctoralstudy.

I.IncrementalRequirementsCoursework.Studentsmustcompleteaminimumof40creditsincluding:ARCH801DoctoralColloquium[1creditx4terms=4credits]*ARCH812TheoryinArchitecturalResearch(BT/DS)/HA615FirstYearGraduateSeminar(HT)[3credits]*ARCH813—ResearchMethods[3credits]*ARCH823,824,or825AreaSeminar[3credits]*ARCH839ResearchPracticum[3credits]orURP865[4credits]2cognatecourses(graduatelevelcoursesoutsideofArchitecture)[6credits]6additionalupper-levelclasses(500-to800-level)inArchitectureorasapprovedbyadvisor[18credits]Insummary,studentstake:12credithoursofcorecourses*(4courses,includingtheResearchPracticum)9credithoursoflettergradedcoursesinthemajorspecializationarea(3courses)9credithoursoflettergradedcoursesintheminorspecializationarea(3courses)6credithoursoflettergradedelectivecoursework(2courses)4credithoursofDoctoralcolloquium(1credithourpertermfor4terms)TheRackhamSchoolofGraduateStudiesrequiresthatstudentsmaintainaB(3.0)averageinallcourses,andArchitectureadditionallyrequiresthatstudentsmusthavereceivedaB+(3.3)orhigherinallArchitecturecoursework.Forcoursesatthe400-level,studentsmustverifythatagivencourseisofferedforgraduatecreditbeforeregisteringforcredit.DirectedreadingswithArchitecturefacultymembersmaycountaspartofthegraduateseminarrequirement;studentsinHTareencouragedtotakeseminarsratherthandirectedreadings.Afterachievingcandidacy,studentsareenrolledinARCH995,whichisdedicatedtodissertationresearchandgradedeverytermbytheadvisor.Allstudentswhoanticipateworkingwithquantitativeorqualitativedatamanipulationarerequiredtocompleteatleastthreecredithoursofgradedcourseworkinstatisticalanalysesand/oradvancedresearchmethods(beyondtherequiredcorecourse).Studentsmustcompletetwoconsecutiveyearsoffull-timegraduateworkinresidencebeginninginthefalltermoftheirfirstyear.Amongotherbenefits,thisallowscorecoursestobetakenintherequiredsequence.Studentswhohavebeenofferedspecialadmissionmayberequiredtocompleteadditionalcoursework.UponsatisfactorycompletionofallPhDcoursework,adoctoralstudentiseligibletoapplyforandbeawardedtheMasterofScience(MSc.)degree.DoctoralColloquium(ARCH801)[4creditsover4terms]Thisone-creditcourseisrepeatedoverfourtermsofcourseworkinDoctoralStudies.Thecolloquiummeetsalternateweeksfortwohours,androtatesamongfacultyandcandidateswhoseresearchinterestsrelatetothoseofstudentscurrentlyincoursework.ThecolloquiumalsohoststhenewRackhamRCRSrequirement(ResponsibleConductofResearchandScholarship),inwhichethicalissuesthatariseintheconductofadvancedresearchinarchitecturearepursued.Attendanceisrequired.

TheoryinArchitecturalResearch(ARCH812;alt.HA615forHT)[3credits]Thiscoursepresentsthematicissuesrelevanttothethreesubfields.BTandDSstudentsenrollinARCH812,inwhichtheyareintroducedtotheoryasitpertainstoarchitecturalresearchintheirareas;HTstudentsenrollinHA615,thefirst-yearresearchmethodologycoursefordoctoralstudentsinhistoryandtheoryofartandarchitecture.ResearchMethods(ARCH813)[3credits]ForBTandDSstudents,ARCH813servesasamethodscourse.ForHTstudentswhohavetakenHA615,ARCH813focusesonhistoriographyinarchitecturalhistoryandtheory.AreaSeminars(ARCH823,824,825)[3credits]TheareaseminarprovidesasubstantiveoverviewoftheseminalliteratureandthemesineachsubfieldofDoctoralStudies.Coursecontentchangesfromyeartoyearandmayincludeaselectionofkeytopicareas,orthemesparticulartoeachsubfield(BT,DS,orHT).Multiplefacultymembersfromthespecialtyareaorasinglefacultymemberteachthiscourse.Everystudentisrequiredtoattendtheareaseminarinhis/hersubfieldatleastonce.Astudentmaywishto,ormaybeaskedtoelectasecondareaseminarifappropriate.Insuchacase,thesecondareaseminarwillcounttowardtherequiredcreditsinthestudent'smajororminor.ResearchPracticum(ARCH839,URP835orcomparablecoursework)[3creditsrequired;UP835is4credits]Thepracticumgenerallyresultsinalongpaper.Thisrequirementenablesstudenttoconductindependentresearchonalimitedscaleatthelevelofqualityexpectedforadissertation,althoughtheresultingpaperismuchshorterinlength.Theresearchshouldbecomparabletothatwhichresultsinapublishablearticle.Basedonconsultationwiththemajoradvisor,thepracticummaytakeoneofseveralforms,includingbutnotlimitedto:

• aself-containedpaperorempiricalstudyofpublishablequalitythatmayormaynotbeacomponentofthedissertationwork;

• thedevelopmentofatheoreticalmodeluponwhichthedissertationistobebased;• aproposalforpilotresearchinthestudent'sdissertationareathatincludesafocusedliteraturereview,

researchdesign,andprotocol.EachstudentmustelecttotakethePracticuminoneofthreeways,withtheapprovalofhis/hermajoradvisor:

• asathreecredithourindependentstudywithhis/hermajoradvisor;• asa600orhigherlevelcourseofatleastthreecredithoursinhis/hermajorareaofspecialization;• asUP835[4credits]withpriorapprovalfromhis/hermajoradvisor.

underpindissertationresearch.Thepurposeoftheexaminationistodemonstratethestudent’scompetenceinboththemajorandminorsubjectareas,aswellasabroadandintegrativeknowledgeofarchitecturalresearch.Specifically,thepreliminaryexaminationseekstoposethekindsofquestionsthatwillhelpthestudentaccomplishtwogoals:

1. synthesizetheknowledgethathasbeengainedthroughcoursework,andespeciallytheresearchpracticum;

II.StandingRequirementsAnnualProgramofStudyReport.Attheendofeachacademicyear,everyactivePh.D.studentisrequiredtosubmitanAnnualProgramofStudyReport,approvedbyhis/heradvisor.TheDoctoralAdvisoryCommitteereviewsthisreport,usingitasaworkingdocumenttohelpthestudentandhis/heradvisortrackcoursesalreadytaken,selectcoursesfortheupcomingterms,andplanfuturestudiessothatacademic/researchobjectivesareachievedandtimelyprogressmadetothedegree.

AfterAdvisoryCommitteereview,thereportisplacedinthestudent'sfile,alongwithevaluationsofhis/herprogressbytheadvisorandofhis/herworkasaGSI/GSRAbythefacultysupervisor(s).Aletterdescribingthecommittee'sassessmentofthestudent'sacademicprogress,copiedtotheadvisor,issenttothestudent.Ifthecommitteehasconcerns,theletterwilloutlinerequirementsthatthestudentmustmeetinordertoremainingoodacademicstanding.Financialsupportforthesubsequentyeardependsupontimelycompletionofasatisfactoryreview.

EnglishLanguageProficiencyRequirement.Priortotakingthequalifyingexaminations,studentsarerequiredtodemonstratewritingskillsintheEnglishlanguageofthesortrequiredtoproduceawell-writtendoctoraldissertation.Typically,suchwritingskillswillbedemonstratedintheprocessofcompletingwrittenassignmentsinthecorecourses.StudentshavingdifficultydoingsoareencouragedtotakewritingcoursesattheEnglishLanguageInstituteand/orotheruniversityunits.Subsequenttothecompletionofsuchcourses,theyarerequiredtotakeanEnglishProficiencyExaminationbeforetheysitforthequalifyingexaminations.IntheEnglishProficiencyExamination,astudentisgiventwohourstowriteanessayofapproximately800wordswithoutassistance.Theessayisthenevaluatedbyacommitteeoftwofacultymembersselectedbytheadvisorycommittee.ContinuousEnrollment.BeginninginSeptember2010,asmandatedbyRackham,allstudentsmustbeenrolled(registeredandpayingtuition)fortheentireperiodinwhichtheyareactiveinthedegree,whetherinresidenceinAnnArbororconductingresearchelsewhere.Thereisno“detachedstudy”inRackhamprograms.“Leave”isgrantedonlyforshortperiodsduringwhichstudentsareunable,forpersonalreasons,topursuetheirstudiesforoneortwoterms(dependingoncircumstance).Departmentshavebeenallocatedanumberof“tuitionfellowships”–whichcarrynostipend–toawardtostudentsduringtermswhentheyarenototherwisesupportedbyfellowshipsorteaching/researchposts.Tuitionfellowshipsmaynotbeawardedintheterminwhichastudentdefendsthedissertation.StudentscanbesupportedintheirfinaltermbyRackhamPre-doctoralFellowships,RackhamOne-TermDissertationFellowships,fellowshipsattheInstituteofHumanities,RackhamMeritFellowships,orGSI-ships;theCollegewillhelppaytuitionorcost-sharewiththestudentwhenfundsareavailable.SatisfactoryProgress.SatisfactoryProgressisdefinedasmaintaininganappropriate(asdistinctfromminimallyacceptable)academicrecord,reachingthevariousstagesofprogressinthedegreeatornearthetimeexpectedofthemajorityofstudents,and,forstudentssupportedbyteachingassistantships,givingevidenceofsatisfactoryteaching.

Themodesofresearchandscholarshipinarchitecturearediverse.StudentsinDoctoralStudiesinArchitectureengageinavarietyofsubjectsandmethodologiesatarangeofpaces.Thereisnosingle,standardpathtothePh.D.However,theDoctoralStudiesAdvisoryCommitteewillbaseitsdecisionconcerningsatisfactoryprogressonthefollowingguidelinesandpolicies:1. DoctoralStudiesinArchitectureisstructuredsothatstudentscancompletethedegreewithinfivetoseven

years(twoyearsforcoursework,onetermforpreliminaryexams;onetermforproposaldevelopment,twoormoreyearsforresearchanddissertationwriting).Somestudentsmayfinishinlessthanfiveyears,andothersinmore.Studentsshouldnormallyachievecandidacywithinthefirstfivetermsofthedegree.

2. Studentsneedingtocompletethelanguagerequirementshoulddosopriortobeingadvancedtocandidacy.3. Withinsixmonthsofachievingcandidacy,studentsshould:1)formallysubmittheirdissertationcommittee

membernamestoRackham;and2)obtaindissertationproposalapprovalfromtheirdissertationcommitteeinaformalpublicpresentation.

4. Duringcandidacy,studentsshouldcontinuetomakesustainedprogress,includingsubmittingdraftsandrevisionsofchapterstotheircommitteeatregularintervals.

ThecasesofstudentswhodonotmaintainsatisfactoryprogresswillbereviewedbytheDirectorofDoctoralStudiesandtheDoctoralAdvisoryCommitteeforappropriateaction.TheDepartmenttakessatisfactoryprogressintoaccountinawardingteachingsupportanddissertationandcandidacyfellowships.

preliminaryexaminationhavebeensuccessfullycompleted,theAssistantDirectorforAdmissions&RecruitingwillforwardaRecommendationforCandidacytotheRackhamGraduateSchoolforfinalapproval.Rackhamsendsformalnotificationofhis/heradvancementtocandidacytothestudent.TheDissertationThisguidelineisintendedtohelpstudentsplantheresearchandwritingofthedissertation,makingitpossibletofinishwithintwoorthreeyearsofpassingthepreliminaryexaminations,andsometimesearlier.Studentsshouldbearinmindthatthesuccessfulcompletionofadissertationisatwo-wayprocessofnegotiationbetweenstudentandadvisor(s),drawingwhereappropriateontheadviceandexpertiseoftheothermembersofthedissertationcommittee.DissertationProposal[EndofWintertermofthirdyear]StudentswhohavepassedtheirPreliminaryExaminationandachievedcandidacyareexpectedtoformaDissertationCommitteecomprisedofnofewerthanfourandnomorethanfivemembers(seebelow)andtowriteaprospectusoftheirdoctoraldissertationafterdiscussionwithallmembersofthecommittee.Thisshouldbecompletedanddefendedattheendofthesixthterm.AllmembersofthecommitteeshouldbebroughtintodiscussionabouttheproposeddissertationassoonaftersuccessfulcompletionofthePreliminaryExamaspossible.AllmembersoftheDissertationCommitteeshouldbepresentatthedissertationproposaldefense.Theproposaldetailsthedissertationprojectconciselyandsituatestheworkinthefield.Thecoreofthedocumentistypicallynolongerthan2500-3000wordsinlength,andincludesathesisstatement,areviewofthestateofthefieldinwhichthedissertationisintervening,atentativechapteroutline,aresearchplan(includingtravelnecessarytocompletionofresearchandascheduleforcompletion),andaworkingbibliography.Thestudentshouldconsultwiththeadvisorandallmembersofthecommitteeinthemonthswhenheorsheisformulatingthisimportantdocument,whichservesastheintellectualplanforsubsequentdissertationresearchandasabasisfromwhichtodevelopgrantapplications.Thedissertationproposaldefensetypicallyopenswiththestudentofferingabriefpresentation(nolongerthan20minutes)ofhis/herproject.Thisisfollowedbycommentsfromthemembersofthecommittee,andresponsesfromthecandidate.Studentsmaypassthedefenseoutright,ortheymaypassconditionally,withrevisionsrequired.Studentsarenormallynotpermittedtoschedulethedefenseuntiltheircommitteedeemsthemcapableofpassingthisrequirement,althoughinrarecasesitispossibletofailaproposaldefense.Inthatcase,studentswillbegivenafixedperiodoftimeforrevisionbeforeare-examinationisscheduled.Thedefenseprovidesacrucialopportunityforthecommitteeandthestudenttodiscussintellectualandmethodologicalaspectsoftheprojectandformulateresearchplansandstrategiestoaidthestudentintimelycompletionofthework.Acopyoftheapprovedproposalwithallrequestedchangesshouldbefiledwiththedegreeofficewithintwoweeksaftertheproposaldefense.

III.GraduateStudentInstructor/GraduateStudentResearchAssistant/GraduateStudentServiceAssistantStudentsareselectedforGSI/GSRA/GSSApositionsinamannerthatbalancestheirindividualresearchneedsandtheneedsoftheCollegeasequitablyaspossible.StudentsshouldrelatetheirpreferencestotheiradvisorsandtotheDoctoralStudiesdirectorbyemailinadvanceofeachterm.Wherepossible,studentswillbeassignedaccordingtotheirpreferenceandtheiradvisor’srecommendation.Often,however,theteachingneedsoftheCollegewilldictatemanyofthefinalassignments.Studentsarewelladvisedtogainasmuchexperienceaspossibleinawidearrayofcourses.ThisisavaluableaspectofDoctoralstudenttrainingandprofessionalpreparation.
