Sin nature eradicated“Christian Perfection”“Perfect Love”“Holiness”

“I felt my soul was all love. I was so stayed on God as I never felt before and I know that I loved Him with all my heart…I have never since found my heart wander from God. Now this is what I always did and do now mean by perfectionism. “ Testimony of Elizabeth Longmore entered in Wesley’s journal.

W H A T P R O G R E S S I V E S A N C T I F I C A T I O N I S N O T•Why are these views so tempting?• Mystical options, quick fixes, shortcuts, ease, cares of this life,

materialism, philosophies, moralism, legalism are often appealing options• We each at times want to not be responsible and lazy• We each are proud and want some credit for our own efforts

• TGC Definition• Sanctification “is the continual process of being made more

holy. It is the progressive conformity of the one who has been justified into the image of their Savior through the work of the Holy Spirit. Like justification, sanctification is a work of grace through faith. And, sanctification is possible because of the finished work of Christ on our behalf.” (https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/erik-raymond/what-is-the-difference-between-justification-and-sanctification/)

W H A T P R O G R E S S I V E S A N C T I F I C A T I O N I S• John Frame Definition• "We can think of sanctification as the outworking of the new

life given in regeneration." It involves the gradual, incremental and (S)piritual work of both putting to death the remains of "indwelling sin" as well as putting on the likeness of Christ. While we work out the salvation given to us, it is God who works in us, both to will and to work for His sovereign good pleasure. (Phil 2:13).” (https://www.monergism.com/topics/sanctification/experientialprogressive-sanctification /)

S UMMAR Y• “As we grow in holiness we grow in conformity to the

image of Christ, and more and more of the beauty of his character is seen in our own lives. This is the goal of perfect sanctification which we hope and long for, and which will be ours when Christ returns.” Grudem• “And every one who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he

is pure” (1 John 3:3).• “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and

Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” (2 Pet. 3:18)
