Completing an order takes just a few clicks and is accomplished with one Direct Express or Channel Express ordering screen. The primary input required to configure a Symmetrix VMAX 10K array includes inserting total usable capacity and selecting the appropriate storage tier. The following storage tiers are available for customers to select: VMAX 10K Storage Tiers Drive Type MixDrive Default Single Tier100% Fibre Channel Drives600 GB 10K RPM Fibre Channel drives, RAID 6(6+2) Two Tiers 97% SATA Drives 3% Enterprise Flash Drives 2TB, 7.2K RPM SATA drives, RAID 6(6+2) 200GB Flash drives, RAID 5(3+1) Three Tiers- Performance 18% Fibre Channel Drives 80% SATA Drives 2% Enterprise Flash Drives 300 GB 15K RPM Fibre Channel drives, RAID 1 2TB, 7.2K RPM SATA drives, RAID 6(6+2) 100 GB Flash drives, RAID 5(3+1) Three Tiers- Cost Optimized 18% SAS Drives 81% SATA Drives 1% Enterprise Flash Drives 300 GB 10K RPM SAS drives, RAID 1 2 T B, 7.2K RPM SATA drives, RAID 6(6+2) 100 GB Flash drives, RAID 5(3+1) PowerlinkMay 15, 2012 EMC ConfidentialInternal Use Only2 When the usable capacity and the storage tier are selected, a default configuration is complete. The following hardware items are pre-selected as part of the ordering process: The drive types and quantity based on the storage tier selected 96 GB or 128 GB of cache memory per engine 16 multi-mode, front-end Fibre Channel ports per engine Direct Express and Channel Express will automatically fill a single engine to capacity with 240 drives before adding the second engine. Hardware warranty provides three-year Premium support. Note that these default configuration values can be overridden and a custom Symmetrix VMAX 10K configuration can be created. Here is an example of a fully configured 4-engine Symmetrix VMAX 10K array: Dri veConfigurationRul esandGuideli nesDrive open systems formatted capacities and model numbers are listed in Appendix A. Storage bays can be populated with combinations of: 600 GB 10K RPM Fibre Channel drives300 GB and 600 GB 10K RPM SAS drives300 GB, 450 GB, and 600GB 15K RPM Fibre Channel drives2 TB 7.2K RPM SATA drives 100 GB and 200 GB Enterprise Flash drives PowerlinkMay 15, 2012 EMC ConfidentialInternal Use Only3 The 2.5-inch SAS drives are populated in a 3.5-inch drive carrier and use the same Symmetrix VMAX 10K DAEs. Different capacities or different speeds can be mixed in Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems. Consult your Symmetrix Champion or SPEED Guru for guidelines for optimal configurations of mixed drive sizes and speeds. Channel partners should consult their EMC Account Manager or local channel management team. A minimum of five drives are required in each of the first four DAEs behind each engine. All Symmetrix VMAX 10K disk drives, Enterprise Flash drives, and back-end links run at4 Gb/s speed.Reserved capacities: -9 GB on the first five drives of every drive loop (180 GB per engine) is reserved for memory vaulting. Flash drives can be used for memory vaulting. -64 GB of total drive capacity is reserved for internal Symmetrix file system use. Drive and RAID Types Drive and RAID types include: RAID 1 (mirrored): all drive types RAID 5 (3+1) and (7+1): all drive types RAID 6 (6+2) and (14+2): Fibre Channel, SAS, and SATA drives These different protection types can coexist in the same array. The Direct Express and Channel Express Configurator defaults RAID protection based on the storage tier selected. RAID Protection Rules The default RAID type can be overridden in the Direct Express and Channel Express Configurator. When selecting the RAID protection, it is important to keep the following rules in mind as it may affect the number of drives that can be configured as well as the total usable capacity of the array: Mirror members must be located on separate loops. RAID 5 (3+1) members must be located on separate loops (one per loop).RAID 5 (3+1) must be configured across four DAEs. RAID 5 (3+1) or RAID5 (7+1) can be configured with no more than one member per loop. RAID 5 (7+1) members must be located on separate loops (one per loop).RAID 5 (7+1) must be configured across eight DAEs. RAID 6 (6+2) requires a minimum of four DAEs. RAID 6 (6+2) can be configured with no more than two members per loop. RAID 6 (6+2) or RAID 6 (14+2) can be configured with no more than two members per loop. RAID 6 (14+2) requires a minimum of eight DAEs. RAID 6 (14+2) can be configured with no more than two members per loop. PowerlinkMay 15, 2012 EMC ConfidentialInternal Use Only4 RAID 5 (7+1) and RAID 6 (14+2) Limitations When configuring a one engine VMAX 10K system, the maximum number of drives with RAID 5 (7+1) or RAID 6 (14 +2) protection that can be configured is 120 including associated spares. The remaining drives configured in the one engine system must be mirrored, RAID 5 (3+1) or RAID 6 (6+2). Refer to Direct Express and Channel Express for additional configuration limitations.Spare Drive Rules The Direct Express and Channel Express Configurator automatically calculate the number of spares required for the system. For hard drives, two spares for every 100 drives (or portion thereof) are required for each unique hard drive type in the system, based on rotational speed (RPM) and capacity. A minimum of four hard disk drive spares are required for Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems. For Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems with 32 or fewer Flash drives, one spare Flash drive is required for each drive size. A minimum of two per 100 are required for Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems with greater than 32 Flash drives for each drive size. The total number of spares required for each system is enforced by SymmWin at installation or upgrade. At installation or upgrade, if the system does not have the required number of spares, SymmWin will not be able to complete the installation. Front-End Port Configurations Rules and Guidelines The Symmetrix VMAX 10K series scales to 64 front-end ports, depending on protocol type. Front-end connections are available to support several protocols and speeds. The Symmetrix VMAX 10K series supports the following open systems connections: 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel: Open systems host connections (multi-mode and single-mode) or remote replication ports, each port interface negotiates down to 4 Gb/s and 2 Gb/s when necessary 10 Gigabit Ethernet: iSCSI host connections or remote replication port (multi-mode) with support for IPv6 10 Gigabit Ethernet: FCoE connections (multi-mode) with support for IPv6 1 Gigabit Ethernet: iSCSI host connections or remote replication ports (multi-mode) with support for IPv6, IPsec Hardware compression for SRDF for VMAX 10K is not supported on either 1 Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. Enginuity software compression for SRDF for VMAX 10K is supported with both 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections. VMAX 10K front-end I/O modules can be exchanged or swapped out for I/O modules of another type. Refer to Direct Express and Channel Express for specific options.Appendix C lists the combinations of protocols and optics of currently available Symmetrix VMAX 10K front-end I/O modules. Global Memory Symmetrix VMAX 10K systems can be configured with up to 512 GB of physical memory (four engines). Each Symmetrix VMAX 10K engine is available with 96 GB or 128 GB of cache memory. Engine memory can be upgraded in the field (from 96 GB to 128 GB). Array memory can be upgraded by adding cache to an engine or by adding an additional VMAX 10K engine to the array up to a maximum of four engines.Symmetrix VMAX 10K engine model numbers are listed in Appendix B. PowerlinkMay 15, 2012 EMC ConfidentialInternal Use Only5 Power Configuration Rules and Guidelines Symmetrix VMAX 10K arrays are configured with single-phase power. All standby power supplies (SPS units) for engines and drives are automatically configured by Direct Express and Channel Express. Two power cables are required for each Symmetrix VMAX 10K bay (system bay or storage bay).Required connectors and extension cords will be added by Direct Express and Channel Express based on the country of installation. These license files entitle users to run specific products on specific arrays. Customers can register and activate new software products and manage software upgrades, Enterprise License Agreements, and re-hosting processes on the Support pages of Powerlink. More information on eLicensing for Symmetrix is available in the Frequently Asked Questions: EMC Symmetrix VMAX 10K Series and Symmetrix Enginuity 5876 eLicensing and Packaging Technical Differences training.Raw vs. Registered Pricing Symmetrix VMAX 10K platform software is sold based on the raw capacity pricing model or registered capacity pricing model.Raw capacity model charges customers by the raw capacity of the Symmetrix VMAX 10K array hosting the software. A flat fee per terabyte is used on all configurations. It uses a base plus capacity approach, where the customer purchases one base license and then incremental capacity licenses to equal the raw capacity of the system.PowerlinkMay 15, 2012 EMC ConfidentialInternal Use Only8 Registered capacity model charges customers by the registered capacity the customer selected. Enterprise Licensing Agreement (ELA) ModelThis model is designed to be a multi-year agreement for large accounts. Pricing is determined by total capacity (e.g., terabytes, CPUs, etc.) installed and incremental capacity for license and maintenance or the registered capacity that the customer selected. Contact your Area Finance Manager/Regional Finance Manager for more information and to confirm that an account qualifies for ELA pricing. EMC channel partners should contact their EMC Partner Manager.
