Connection of iPad to University network using VPN
Version 1:00 Page 2
The University of Exeter provides a number of ways for you to connect securely to the
network to access your data using an iPad/ iPhone.
This document outlines how to connect an iPad to the network using Junos Pulse.
Please note that these may vary slightly for an iPhone, but the connection information in
section 2 will remain the same.
1) Obtaining Junos Pulse
The first software you need is Junos Pulse, which is Juniper Network’s
VPN client. On your iPad open the App Store and search for Junos Pulse.
It is a free app. You will see it listed as:
Download and install the app.
2) Configure Junos Pulse for VPN
Once installed, you will need to configure Junos Pulse to connect to the University network. When you run the Junos Pulse app you will see the following on screen:
Click on Connect button to create a new connection. The following window is
displayed:

The only mandatory information required in this window is in the URL field, which is shown below. You can enter your username and password but for security reasons we recommend you do not do this and instead enter these details every time you connect. This means that if your iPad gets lost or stolen then an unauthorised party will not be able to connect to the University network using your account.
We would recommended the following settings -
Name – UoE
URL - https://vpnsecure.exeter.ac.uk
Username – leave blank
Authentication / Password – leave blank
Realm – leave blank
Role – leave blank
Click the Save button.
You should now be prompted for your username and password –

When you have selected Sign In, the software will connect to the University VPN
system. The software will then return to the initial Junos Pulse screen.
You will see displayed in the top left corner of the screen if the VPN is
active.
You can now minimise Junos Pulse and use other apps on your iPad to connect to
University resources (see section 3 onwards) but you will need to go back into
Junos Pulse and select the Disconnect button to terminate the VPN connection –
Connection details should be saved on the main Junos Pulse app page, click on
Connect to restart the VPN service.
3) Accessing shared File Spaces
To access your shared drives you may use a number of different apps. Although unsupported by the University, we have found that File Browser and Good Reader work well. Both apps cost £2 – £3 each. On your iPad open the app store. You will see the apps listed as: Install either or both apps depending on your requirements. Please note: The Junos Pulse VPN must be connected in order to connect to and access your shared drives on the University network. When on campus, please connect to the UoE_Secure wifi network and then the VPN is not needed.

A Create New Connection list will be displayed.
Select SMB server. The Readable Title field will be the entry displayed in the Connect to Servers list in the app; enter a description of the drive. On this occasion U Drive would be appropriate.
In the Network Address field enter \\isad.isadroot.ex.ac.uk\uoe\user for Exeter based staff. Tremough based staff should replace \uoe\user with \uec\your_username.
For User, enter your UoE username, usually in the format XYZ123.
Click the Save button.
You should now see the U Drive under the Connect to Servers.
To connect to this drive, use Junos Pulse to start the VPN and then Touch the U Drive entry in GoodReader to access the files
If you wish to connect to a shared drive such as the N: Drive you would need to create an SMB connection with the following information:
In the Readable Title field enter a description of the drive such as N Drive.
In the Network Address field enter \\isad.isadroot.ex.ac.uk\uoe\your_required_drive for Exeter file shares or \\isad.isadroot.ex.ac.uk\uec\your-_required_drive for Tremough file shares; where your-_required_drive is the directory structure after \uoe\ or \uec\
You can find your_required_drive by opening “My Computer” using the icon with the same name on the desktop of your University PC or laptop.

5) To configure a network drive in Filebrowser.
Please note the connection method outlined below is not supported by the Infrastructure Team and following an upgrade or similar to the Windows system may no longer work. These instructions are however provided as an indication of how to connect to other network type resources. Open the app. If you do not see the following screen (the locations displayed may differ), click the Menu button and ensure the Locations icon is selected at the bottom of the screen.
Click the + icon at the top of the screen to add a connection. The following details will create a connection to your University U: drive.

To connect to this drive use Junos Pulse to start the VPN and then Touch the U Drive entry in FileBrowser to access the files.
6) Connecting to MyExeter
Configuring apps to connect to the shared drives works well, but there is also the option to connect to your mail and shared drives through the portal: MyExeter. Safari, the iPad browser, can be used to connect to the University of Exeter web site but use the browser within Junos Pulse. From the main Junos Pulse screen, click the round Intranet button. This window is displayed. If you have configured any bookmarks using a non University PC or your laptop, they will be displayed and can be opened from here. Enter my.exeter.ac.uk and click the Browse button. Use the website as you would through any browser.
