INTRODUCTICV
In the field of education it is important te remember that tfie 21stcentury is already here. Students now in secondary schools will bein the mainstream of life in the year 2000; thus their education isnot a remote question for futurists or twenty first century planners--it is a question for right now. Will their education prepare themfor a world that is past OT for the world that is coming?
If you have begun to use thlt manual, you are part of a new educationalmovement. Our hope is.that you will use it to hel0 today's studentmake the transition from living in the past to living in the future. In the past, we have often thought of the world as if it were a largegreen pool.table on whose surface is an array of scattered, self-con-tained billiard balls of various colors. If there is to be a futureat all, however, the Planet Earth must be thought of as a whole systemwhere all the parts are in dynamic relationship. This difference inthinking of the world's lands and peoples as a collection rather thana system has created the largest and most profound-"generation gap"in the history of mankind. You as a teacher have a unique opportun-ity to close the gapi
Tne material in this manual is arranged under rour main headings whichwe havr- come t7, think of as "world order values." We borrowed theguidelines from Betty Reardon, one of a trans-national community ofscholars concerned with global social order. After much seriousdeliberation, they determined that world order values are in essencethe antithesis of major problems which bring stress, conflict andhuman suffering to the world society. Thus, PEACE, the opposite ofthe great world problem of violence, becomes our first world ordervalue. In the tame manner, ECONOMIC HQUITY, the antithesis of wide-spread and severe poverty, becomes a value. Racism, sexism, and otherpolitical Oppressions give rise to SOCIAL JUSTICE as a value; and theproblems of pollution, resource depletion and overdevelopment lead toECOLOGICAL BALANCE as a fourth world order value.
As educators we are committed to peace as both a goal and a process. We believe as did one of the great peace educators and activists ofall time, Mahatma Gandhi, "There is no way to Peace. Peace is theway."
