ABSTRACTA study was conducted to obtain information on the
transfer outcomes of Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) studentswho transferred to another Philadelphia-area college or university. The study sought information on the grade point average (GPA), credithours taken, graduation status, and other measures of studentpersistence for 252 former CCP students who matriculated at 24transfer institutions. Study findings indicated: (1) 41% of thetransfer students had graduated from programs at CCP; (2) the averagecumulative GPA for transfer students at CCP was 2.9; (3) an averageof 88% of CCP-earned credits transferred into the programs at thereceiving institutions; (4) the average number of credits earned perstudent at the transfer school was 25; (5) the average ratio ofcredits earned to credits attempted at the transfer school was 95%;(6) the transfer students experienced an average drop of 0.7 pointsin GPA between CCP and the transfer institution; and (7) only 7% ofthe students transferred into programs that were obviously differentfrom their CCP program of study. The report includes informai'_ion ontransfer activity at each of of the 24 responding transferinstitutions, including numbers of students transferring intoparticular departments, the programs of study taken by the transferstudents at CCP, the numbers of students experiencing academicdifficulties, and the CCP courses that did not transfer. Introduction
Over the years, a sizeable number of CCP students havetransferred out of CCP and into other Philadelphia-area collegesand universities. Previous institutional research indicated thatnine months after leaving CCP, approximately half of the CCPgraduates and 301. of the former, nongraduating CCP students hadenrolled in a program of study at another school.
Unfortunately, in the past little information was gathered bythe College that could be used to evaluate the post-CCP academicprogress of our former students. Several pieces of informationthat routinely appear on a Student transcript would be useful forthis purpose and therefore form the basis of this transferoutcomes report.
Grade point average haS received much attention in transferoutcomes studies conducted by others. Much of this preoccupationwith GPA stems from its acceptance as an efficient and relativelyreliable measure of student academic progress. In addition, acomparison of QPA's across schools is a useful measure of thedegree of academic assimilation achieved by former CCP studentsat their transfer school. CCP and transfer school SPA havetherefore been included in this report.
Credit hour information is interesting for several reasons.Ry itself, it provides an uncomplicated measure of studentpersistence. In addition, research conducted by others hasindicated there is a postive correlation between the amour* ofCourse work completed at community college and the studentsacademic performance at the transfer school. For these reasons,CCP credit hour information and graduation status are included inthis report.
In this report the analysis of specific CCP courses thattransfer into four- year programs was limited to nonremedialcourses in which the student earned a grade of C or better. Eventhough course analyses conducted within these parameters measureshe effectiveness of articulation between the schools rather thanmeasuring a direct student outcome, they have been included inthis study since the presence or absence of articulationagreements will effect outcomes, particularly transfer creditinformation.
Finally, several additional measures of student persistenceare worth considering in a transfer outcomes study. These includethe number of cumulative credits earned and the ratio of creditsearned to creditS attempted at the transfer school.
This report is a supplement to an earlier IR Report #26.entitled "Transfer Outcomes Fall 1982". Report *26 providedadmissions and matriculation information for former CCP studentswho transferred to other institutions in the Philadelphia area. Each of these students would have matriculated in Fall '82

semester and completed at least 9 credits at CCP.A total of 30 receiving institutions were included in the
study. Only Drexel and Lincoln Universities did not cooperate byproviding transcripts of work completed by our former students attheir schools.
A list of participating schools, the number of former CCPmatriculants and the number of applicants appears in Table 1.

Principle data sources for this study were transcripts fromCCP and the receiving institution. One drawback with thisapproach is the diversity of the information that is routinelyprinted on transcripts. Although all schools list the courses thestudent takes internally this is where the standardi4ation ends. Most school transcripts contain the name and number of tranfercredits from other institutions, Some iist the specific coursesthat transfer into their programs, a few record current student

status or graduation information. Because of this diversity, much of the transfer outcome information in this study will beaggregated by transfer institution, yeilding a descriptiveprofile for each receiving institution.

A summary of much of the transfer outcomes informationappears in Tables 2 and 3, which are on the next two pages.Table 2 summarizes CCP-related information for each transferSchool that responded to the data request. Table 3 handlestransfer school-related information in the same way. The totalset of figures that appear at the top of both tables can be usedas a baseline when reviewing institutional data. For example,41% of all matriculated students graduated from CCP. Severalschools, including La Salle, Hahnemann, Philadelphia Textile,Spring Garden and Gwynedd Mercy admitted a higher percentage of
CCP graduates than the norm. As a result, students whotransferred to these schools earned, on the average, more CCPcredits than the average 46 earned by all students whotransferred.
On the other hand, students who transfer to Peirce JuniorCollege, New School of Music, Frankford Hospital, PhiladelphiaCollege of the Performing Arts and University of Pennsylvaniawere enrolled at CCP for the fewest credits. It should be pointedout that much of I's information is based on one or two studentsand should therefc. ; be reviewed cautiously.
As a group, the matriculated students included in this studydid well academically while at CCP, the average cumulative CCPGPA was 2.9. Only Peirce and Albert Einstein matriculantsearned CP'A's below 2.7 while at CCP.
An average of 89"/. of CCP earned credits transferred into theprograms at the receiving institutions. The figures in the lastcolumn of Table 2 are based on only nonremedial courses in whichthe student earned a grade of C or better.
Schools accepting a lower than normal percentage of CCPcredits include Thomas Jefferson University, Gwynedd MercyCollege, Moore College of Art, Albert Einstein Hospital,Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts and University of
Pennsylvania.CCP courses and the transfer program the course did not
transfer into are detailed in the Institution Profiles whichappear at the back of this report. In an effort to enhancearticulation, CCP departments should evaluate core courses that
repeatedly turn up in this category.Much of the information that is contained in Table 3 helps to
monitor student academic progress after CCP. This informationindicates that former students are likely to be full time at thetransfer school. The average Student has completed the equivalent

of two semesters' worth of full-time course work at the transferinstitution. Only students at Peirce and West Chester havecompleted fewer credits than the norm of 25.
Several students have already completed a Bachelor's degreeprogram at the four-year institution. In most cases, these arestudents who earned credits at another school prior to attendingCCP and the transfer school, or in the case of the New School ofMusic, students who attended the "transfer" school full time andpicked up some general education credits at CCP during concurrentsemesters.
Using the ratio of credits earned to attempted as a measureof academic competence, it appears that the eight students atWest Chester and the six students at Philadelphia College of Artare experiencing Some difficulties in their transfer programs.By contrast, transfer students at several schools includingGwynedd Mercy, Villanova. and Beaver completed 100% of theirattempted course work.
eased on transfer school SPA information that appears in thelast two columns in Table: 3, it looks as if former CCP studentsexperience a degree of transfer shock in the transition betweeninstitutions. Overall, the students included in thiS studyexperienced a drop of 0.7 points in GPA between schools. Onlythe students at Peirce and the one student at University ofPennsylvania maintained a higher GPA at the transfer school thanat CCP. The lowest GPA's were earned at Widener, Hahnemann,West Chester and Moore College of Art.
It is insightful when reviewing transfer outcome informationto consider the match between CCP program and transfer schoolprogram, since a mismatch of the two could explain drops in GPAor loss of earned credits. Generally speaking, few students (7%)transfered into programs that were obviously different from theirCCP program of study. General S'.:udies students were excludedfrom this analysis since individual student transcriptS wouldhave to be studied in detail in order to determine if the GeneralStudies program paralelled the transfer school program. Since547. of the students included in this study were CCP GeneralStudies students, it was decided thiS type of analysis would beincluded in the detailed General Studies Program Audit that iscurrently in progress.
Profiles of each of the receiving institutions are appendedto the end of this report. After reviewing the_ profiles and thetable information, the conclusion can be made that studentacademic success after CCP varies over transfer institution. Our
former students strongest academic performance occurred at ThomasJefferson UniverSilzy. Gwynedd Mercy College, Holy Family College,Philadelphia College of Textile and Sciences and FrankfordHospital School of Nursing. Weakest academic performance isassociated with Hahnemann University, West Chester College,Widener College and Moore College of Art. Future research shouldbe concerned with determining the reasons for poor- academic

performance at these institutions.Departmental staff should take the time to review each
Transfer Institution Profile to determine in which of thereceiving institutions most of their former students enroll. thenumber who experience academic difficulty (c' fined in the profileas a cumulative GPA below 2.00) at the trantff,,r school and corecourses in their program that do not transfer into paralellprograms.
