INTRODUCTION
For the past seven years, the State Council of Higher Education haspublished a report of selected characteristics and degree programs for Virginia'sstate-supported colleges and universities.
In January 1971, twenty-six accredited colleges joined together toform the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia. Working through theCouncil of Independent Colleges, the State Council of Higher Education hasbeen able to collect information on selected characteristics and degree programsfrom the private sector of higher education in Virginia.
By combining data from independent institutions with informationcollected from the state-supported colleges, a more comprehensive picture ofhigher education in th9 Commonwealth has been obtained.
This report has been developed to provide information freqLentlyrequested by students, parents, and other citizens. Prospective students areencouraged to .,eek information concerning admission standards and proceduresfrom the Director of Admissions at each institution in which they are interested.Although costs are generally higher at the independent colleges, it should benoted that financial aid opportunities ct these institutions may compensate forthe additional cost.
Although the State Council will be pleased to respond to questions ofa general nature about information in this publication, requests for additional ormore detailed information should be directed to the individual institution.
All data included in the report are for the academic year beginningSeptember, 1973 and changes may occur during the year.
The State Council hopes that this report will prove to be a valuableservice to higher education in the Commonwealth. The Council welcomescomments and suggestions for future improvements in this publication.
