INTRODUCTION
In forming its first Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women in
1973, the Association for Education in Journalism recognized the
increasing need to identify its women members and those minority
men and women teaching or planning to teach in colleges and univer»
sities offering journalism education. The first committee began
this directory by surveying some 350 women journalism educators from
AEJ and other listings. Three mailings brought some 200 responses.
The 1974 committee followed with an additional mailing to about 200
names, including many new names, doctoral students and minority men.
About 100 responses were received. This directory is the result of
that two-year survey. B:cause of the time-lag between the survey
and its publication, them will undoubtedly be some errors resulting
from new jobs, promotions and degrees conferred. For your aid,
each 1972 entry has been identified with an asterisk.
The directory is intended to aid administrators and search
committees seeking prospective faculty members. It should be
useful in selecting guest speakers and visiting seminar participants.
It will certainly begin the task of identifying the growing numbers
of academic women in this field. It is not a job roster, however,
and listing here does not necessarily mean that one wishes to move
to a new position. The AEJ national office maintains a job roster
and positions and job seeking notices are published in the AEJ News-
letter.
The questionnaires brought some detailed responses, but the
editors and their student assistants had to summarize much of the
information. These guidelines were used:
1- Degrees: Degrees conferred and dates (when given) were listed,
and students were listed as "in progress toward the M.A. (or master's,
if unclear) or Ph.D.," and this included those expecting degrees
in 1974. Candidates for the doctorate were specified and Fulbright
and other special fellowships were noted.
2- Teaching Specialties: Limited to journalism, mass communication
and occasionally speech.
3- Teaching Experience: Limited to teaching in journalism, mass
communication, broadcasting and public relations courses in
colleges and universities and some secondary school teaching. The
current position, school name and address and date started are
included. The next last teaching position is listed, but beyond
that, teaching experierce is summarized by type and number of years.
Teaching fellowships and research assistantships were included.
VLSItert k.110.10,S,
4- Professional Experience.: Limited to communications orcommunication-related jobs, including newspaper, radio, tele-
vision, wire service, public relations, house organ, magazine
and information research (if noted). Sumer internships and
summer media jobs were included. Th' current job, title, date
started and work address (if not currently teaching) were given.
Previous employment was summarized by 41edia tyle, executive
position, and number of years, as carefully as was possible from
the information provided.
The Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women would appreciate
receiving corrections and requests for questio3naires from those
who would like to be listed in the addenda. i.equests for additional
copies of the directory should be directed to: Professor Quintus
Wilson, AE3 Executive Secretary, 113 Reavis Northern Illinois
University, Dehalb, Ill. 60115. There will be a small charge to
cover mailing costs.
