• Documentaries can use different styles to help fulfill the vision of the director and portray a subject.

Observational

• Observational documentaries provide viewpoint on a topic without intervention from the filmmaker. This helps create an unbiased look onto a subject.

Propaganda

• Propaganda based documentaries are designed to influence an audience to side with a particular viewpoint from an organization or group.

• This type of documentary provides a biographical look onto a person’s life, highlighting an aspect of their life or an event they partook in.

• Archives can be used to help document a historical event. Still images, newsreels, and old films can be stitched together to create a story.

• Documentaries can be used to help recreate events that were not captured on film. A reenactment can be constructed based upon eyewitness accounts, archival evidence, or interviews.

• This style of documentary emphasizes on issues affecting a community and try to spread awareness about them.

• Documentaries can use comedy to help portray a serious issue. Comical characters or satire could be introduced to help lighten the mood of a topic and to help captivate an audience.

• This style of documentary is essentially a report in a visual format, with the documentary presenting an argument and backing it up with evidence to express a view.

Possible Direction

• For our documentary, I think that we should try to use an observational style in order to try to capture insight onto the idea of video game addiction. As we are just trying to capture what video game addiction is like, we will not have a particular standpoint to argue for. On the contrary, this documentary will act as a social research where we will discover what it is like to go without video games and the psychological ideas relating to it.
