fastenedthroughaholeatthecenterofthemembrane;
theendofthenylonthreadislooselysecuredinamotor
turnedrosinedwheeltoproducefriction.Soundis
producedbytheactionoftherimoftherotatingwheel
rubbingthethreadasthewheelisturned.Thetwo
surfacesalternatingbetweenstickingtoeachotherand
slidingovereachother,withacorrespondingchangein
theforceoffriction.Themotorspeedisreducedatthe
lowestspeed.Theslowturnofthewheelcreateschanges
inthetensionofthethread,resultingassounds(crackling
impulse)inthemembraneofthespeaker.

Theworkcombinepreciseself-mademechanical
systemswithmotors,rosinedplasticwheels,cotton
threads,steel,metalchain,lightweightfoamboard,
graniteandrubber.Thesoundsproducedwhencertain
structurescomeincontactwitheachother,different
tonesofclicksandticksmechanicallyprogrammed
andgeneratedbytheslowmovingrosinedwheel
graduallyeroded,andametalchainstartsto‘dance’in
acaptivatingandfascinatingmanner.

chesSoundsoloforpreparedchesswasdevelopedincollaboration
withNebolsinaandHirakawa.Theworkcreatesaninteractive
dialoguebetweenchess,soundandimage.Preparationintroduces
structuralandfunctionalpossibilitiesby;definingmusicalsections;
affectingtheformofplaying;alertingthehabitualperceptionsof
theperformeraswellasdeterminingspeed,dynamicsandother
musicalparameters.Particularlytheworkexaminesthesameslow
repetitivephysicalgesturesunderdifferentconditions.By
questioningthefunctionofgesturesandsoundschesSoundinvites
boththeperformerandlistenerintoanevocativeprivatesound-
visualworldaswellastonewwaysofengagingtochessandmusic,
acousticallyandvisually.
Thevideooperatesbothasaself-reflexiveandcompositionaltool
thatfacilitatesextendingthephysicallimitsandpossibilitiesofthe
performingbody.Itprovidesthepossibilityofexposingthedetailed
movementsandgesturesofmakingthesoundsthatcomealong
withthedetailedmovementsaudibleandtraceable.

Commissionedforthe“faithful!FidelityandBetrayalofMusical
Interpretation”festival.WrittenandpremieredbyErnstSurberg.
SoloforMotorsandResonantBody,isusingmotorspreparedwitha
woodenwheelandplacedondifferentlocationsinsidethepiano(on
thestrings,nexttothenails,etc.)insuchawaythatitallowthemto
move,spin--tobehaveinawaythatissimilartoaliveorganism,
producinganenormousvarietyofrhythmsandsounds.
Thewheelshavebeenmodifiedandshapedtoproducedifferent
angles,suchthattheycomeintocontactwiththestringsinavariety
ofways.Atthesametimethesoundoftheengineisamplifiedbythe
bodyofthepiano.Theperformercaninfluencethesoundby
changingoroperatingthespeedcontroller,whichchangesthe
enginesoundofthemotor.

Soundsareentangled.Theycomefromandtravelaroundavariety
ofbodies.Continuousandliquid,soundsdonotnecessarilyarriveat
presumeddestinations.Embodiedandimagined,theirphysicaland
imaginaryconnotationsareintimatelydifferent.Evenifsoundsare
habituatedwithinthematerialcultureofhearingandlistening,they
remaincontingent,astheyalsominglewithoneanother.Sounds
simultaneouslychangeandarechangedbytheirimmediatephysical
environment.Suchcontingencycanpotentiallydrawourattention
towhatgetsunnoticed,unseenandunheard.
MarianthiPapalexandri-Alexandri’sExtensionsrealizesthis
potential,whilemarkingtheinaudiblesoundsinaninvisiblespace.
Installedinthe“UntererHirschgang”theworkpointsatseven
locations.Ineachlocation,asteelwirethatisconnectedtoaspecial
mechanicaldeviceacousticallyactivatesaninvisiblesurface.This
configurationinvitesustoattentivelyhearandseetheproductionof
sound,themovementofthewirebetweenthesurfaceandthe
mechanicaldevice.Thesevenlocationsvibratebothindividuallyand
together.Theirspectrumoffrequenciesbecomeaudiblebothin
theirownmarkedzoneandindialoguewithoneanother.They
togetherturnthe“UntererHirschgang”intoasoundingbody.

throughaholeatthecenterofthemembrane;theendofthenylonline
islooselysecuredtoawoodenrosinedmotordrivenrodtoproduce
friction.Thesoundisproducedbythenylonlinecausingthemembrane
tovibratebyfriction.ThesoundofUntitledIVcanbeinfluencedby
manipulatingthetensionofthenylonlines,changingthespeedofthe
motor,turningonandoffthemotors,depressingthemembranewith
thefingerswhileitisvibratingtovarythepitchorbyplayingonthe
keys.

seventeenclearacryliccylindricaltubeswithoneendopenand
theotherclosedwithanelasticsiliconemembrane.Anylonline
isfastenedthroughaholeatthecentreofthemembrane;the
endofthenylonlineislooselysecuredinanacrylicresined
motordrivenrodtoproducefriction.Thesoundisproducedby
thenylonlinecausingthemembranetovibratebyfriction.The
soundofUntitledIIcanbeinfluencedbymanipulatingthe
tensionofthenylonlines,changingthespeedofthemotor,
turningonandoffthemotorsorbydepressingthemembrane
withthefingerswhileitisvibratingtovarythepitch.
UntitledIIcreatesandexploresasoundscapeofmachine-
producedlongsustainedsoundsandtextureswithorganic
characterandwithoutanypostprocessing.Furthermoreit
questionstheroleoftheperformerhighlightingthedifference
betweenperformingandoperating(“musicasart”and“music
asmusic”).

Operatorquestionstheroleoftheperformerhighlightingthedifference
betweenperformingandoperating.Operatorisapiecefornine
instrumentaliststopremierebyEnsembleMosaikattheDialoge
FestivalinSalzburg(December2010).Operatorexpandsontheideaof
usingmotor-drivensoundpropsthatfunctionbothassoundsources
andasactivepreparationsdeterminingthespeed,dynamicsandother
musicalparameters.Thisprocessencouragestheperformertolisten
proactivelyandbecomeawareofthepossibilitieslatentbetweenhimor
herandtheinstrument.
Thisinteractionbetweentheperformerandtheinstrumentis
particularlychallengedwithanewpreparationdevelopedforOperator
thatconsistsofaplexiglasstubepreparedwithanactivespeakerthatis
connectedtoacomputeroriPodandattachedtotheendofeachwind
instrument.Thesound(whitenoise,squarewave,randomnoise)travels
fromthecomputerthroughthespeakerandinsidetheinstrument
whichfunctionsasaresonantbodythattheperformercan“play”
throughthekeys.Lastly,theiPodisconnectedtoafourchannelspeed
controlleroperatedbytheconductor.

Yarnexploresalternativepossibilitiesofplayingconventionalmusical
instruments.Inthispiece,twostringinstrumentsareconnectedbya
fishinglinetiedtoastringoneachinstrument.Thisconnectorstring
isbowedtotransmitsoundbetweenthetwoconnectedinstruments
whichnowbecomeasinglepercussiveinstrument.Forthispiece,the
percussionist(bowingthecentralstring)andthetwostringplayers
havetocoordinatetheirbodilygesturesinordertoachievetheideal
sound.Thefragileequilibriumbornoutofthiscompoundinstrument
necessitatesaheightenedsensitivityamongtheperformersanda
veryparticularformoflisteningandbodilyreaction.

PapalexandriobtainedherBMusdegreeinmusicandMMusdegreeincomposition(MMus)fromGoldsmithsCollege,UniversityofLondon.FollowingpostgraduatestudiesandresearchattheUniversitätfürMusikunddarstellendeKunstinVienna(2008).Shecompletedherdoctoralstudiesinmusiccomposition(Ph.D.)attheUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego(2008).InAugust2016PapalexandrijoinedtheCornellUniversityDepartmentofMusicasAssistantProfessorofCompositionandSoundArt.
Overthelastsevenyears,Papalexandrihascreatedaseriesofworkscentereduponmechanicalconstructions,thatallowshertoacousticallyactivatemusicalinstruments,objectsandarchitecturalelementsandspacepresentedinthecontextofcomposition,musicperformance,soundinstallationandsculpture.Sheisknowninternationallyforhersubtlesoundconstructionsemployingfewmeans,whichshemakesbothherselfandtogetherwithSwiss-bornkineticartistPeLang.Theirrecentkineticsoundsculpture,SpeakingofMembranes,isinthecollectionofEmma,EspooMuseumofModernArt,Finland.
