WIN THE SERIES: The first-place Dodgers look for the series
win in the finale of their four-game set in St. Louis today
following yesterday’s 2-1 loss. Los Angeles had its season-best
winning streak snapped at six games last night, but has still won
11 of its last 14 games since May 17. Following today’s matinee,
the Dodgers will fly to Milwaukee to close out their seven-game
Midwest swing with three games against the Brew Crew over the
weekend.
The Dodgers have completed 1/3 of their schedule at the
54-game mark, and are on pace for a 99-win season. Los
Angeles last was on this pace through its first 54 games
in 2012.
The Dodgers’ 33 wins are tied for the National League
lead with the Rockies and D-backs, behind only
Houston’s 38 victories for tops in the Majors.
Today marks the final meeting of the season between
these historic franchises, with the Dodgers already
having clinched the season series (4-2) for a second
consecutive season.
The Dodgers lead the National League with a +86 run
differential, four behind the Astros (+90) for the MLB
lead. Los Angeles has led the big leagues in that category
five times since moving west in 1958 (last: 2009, +169).
Los Angeles has won its last five and eight of its last nine
day games, while posting a big-league best 11-4 record
(.733) during the daytime.
A-MAY-ZING: The Dodgers posted a 19-9 record (.679) in
May, the best mark in the National League and the second best in
the Majors behind only the Astros’ 22-7. Los Angeles has
outscored its opponents 159-93 during the month, while out
homering the opposition 34-22.
Yasmani Grandal has hit safely in 11 of his last 12
games, including an active six-game hitting streak, as he
capped a breakout month of May with a .337/.374/.523
slashline. Grandal ranked ninth in the NL in May batting
average (29-for-86), to go along with 10 doubles (T-1st),
two homers and 16 RBI in 23 games.
Chris Taylor posted a .322/.430/.511 slashline in 28
May games, going 29-for-90 with five doubles, four
homers and 14 RBI. Overall, Taylor, who has appeared
defensively at second base (20 games), third base (six
games), shortstop (one game) and centerfield (eight
games) this year, ranks among the NL leaders (min. 125
PA) in batting average (.316, 13th) and OBP (.412, 10th)
in 38 games.
Chase Utley batted .314 (22-for-70) with a .402 OBP,
three doubles, three triples, two homers and 14 RBI in 25
May games. Utley enters play today just eight RBI shy
of 1,000 for his career.
Prior to going on the DL Monday (left SC joint
inflammation), Alex Wood went 5-0 with a 1.27 ERA (4
ER/28.1 IP) in his five May starts, ending the month with
a run of 25.1 scoreless innings – the longest streak in the
Majors this year. He struck out 41 in 28.1 innings.
PARTY ON: The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s Blue
Diamond Gala is only one week away – Thursday, June 8 at
Dodger Stadium – featuring a private benefit concert with
Maroon 5 and Earth, Wind & Wire. For tickets and more
information, please visit Dodgers.com/Gala.
#VOTE BLUE: MLB revealed its first All-Star balloting update
Tuesday, with Corey Seager leading all NL shortstops in his bid
for a second consecutive selection to the Midsummer Classic.
Were he to win the vote, Seager would be the first Dodger
shortstop to earn a starting assignment in the All-Star Game since
Bill Russell in 1980. Yasmani Grandal (5th), Justin Turner
(3rd) and Yasiel Puig (14th) were also among the leaders at their
respective positions. Fans are encouraged to #VoteBlue at
Dodgers.com/Vote.
BEST IN THE BIZ: Ross Stripling had his scoreless innings streak
snapped at 12.1 last night in his second inning of work, as he allowed
his first run since May 8 and took the loss. Despite the blemish, the
L.A. bullpen leads the NL with a 2.67 ERA (54 ER/182.0 IP), a 1.07
WHIP, a 3.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio (1st, MLB) and 210 strikeouts.
Josh Fields ranks third among qualifying NL relievers with
a 0.84 ERA, while Pedro Baez (1.19, 8th) and Kenley
Jansen (1.35, 10th) join him among the league leaders.
Jansen has struck out 35 of the 73 batters he’s faced this
year without issuing a walk, tying Adam Wainwright’s
MLB record (set in 2013) for most strikeouts to open a
season without a walk (Source: Elias Sports Bureau).
Overall, the Dodger pitching staff leads the big leagues with
a 3.20 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP, while leading the NL in
opponents’ batting average (.231).
Brandon McCarthy looks to win his third in a row this
afternoon, after holding the Marlins to one run on three hits
in 6.0 innings on May 21 and blanking the Cubs with 6.0
innings of two-hit ball on Saturday. McCarthy, who has
made a quality start in five of eight outings this year, has
yet to record a decision while posting a 4.15 ERA (8
ER/17.1 IP) in three career starts against the Cardinals. He
last faced St. Louis on July 22, 2016, when he allowed two
runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings in a no-decision at Busch
Stadium.
DAILY DOUBLE: The Dodgers lead the Majors with 109 doubles,
and have four players ranking among the NL’s Top 10 in doubles:
Kiké Hernández (15, T-4th), Yasmani Grandal (14, T-7th), Justin
Turner (13, T-10th) and Corey Seager (13, T-10th).
HARDWARE COMING: Cody Bellinger completed his first full
month in the Majors with nine homers (T-4th, MLB) and 27 RBI
(2nd, MLB) in 28 games. The 21-year-old would appear to be in
prime position to be the Dodgers’ first Rookie of the Month since
Corey Seager in June 2016, ranking among NL rookies in May hits
(26, 1st), runs (22, 1st), doubles (5, T-5th), homers (9, 1st), RBI (27,
1st) and SLG (.566, 2nd).
Bellinger tied for the monthly rookie franchise record for
home runs with Joc Pederson (May 2015) and James
Loney (Sept. 2007), and tied for third for RBI:
