Do Downtown Greenville is an initiative of several downtown

merchants, restaurants, and hotels in partnership with the Greenville

Journal. Our goal is to communicate to residents and visitors alike

everything our downtown has to off er. Downtown Greenville presents

opportunities unlike any other with noteworthy shops, remarkable

restaurants, visual and performing arts venues, beautiful green spaces,

and more. e redevelopment vision of the City of Greenville is to have

“a thriving Downtown which is recognized nationally as an example of

a ‘state-of-the-art’ community in which to live, work, and play… which

serves in itself as a national attraction.” Mission accomplished.

Downtown Greenville is home to 90 shops and 90 restaurants.

If you can’t fi nd it here, chances are it can’t be found!

Another component of Do Downtown Greenville is a focus on all

things local. Shop local. Eat local. Support local. When you shop local,

you help support our community. Many of our friends, neighbors, and

families are employed by, or own, these businesses that bring special

products, services, and variety to Greenville. Make the commitment to

shop local this holiday season and know the joy of supporting

our community – one of the greatest gifts of all.

Making Saturday night SpecialMonthly concert series features up-and-comers

A new concert series showcases tomorrow’s top acts today—or Saturday, to be more specific.Saturday Night Special at Saffron’s Sidewalk Café features live music on the first Saturday of

each month through September. A labor of love by platinum-selling singer/songwriter Edwin McCain along with fellow musician Taylor Moore, this once-a-month concert series highlights the Southeast’s best up-and-coming bands they think the Upstate needs to hear.

The parking lot alongside Saffron’s—located on Augusta Street in the WestEnd—transforms into a sprawling bandstand equipped with a top-tier sound system, stage and, of course, talent. Doors open at 5PM, with music from 6-9PM. Admission is $10.

For details, call 241-0401 or check out www.facebook.com/SaturdayNightSpecialMusic.

natiOnal recOgnitiOnFalls Park – long beloved by locals – just gained a little national adoration, too. US Airways

Magazine includes Greenville’s centerpiece in its listing of the country’s “Best City Parks.” In the June online edition, the “Let’s Go” columnist says: “It’s hard to decide which is more beautiful: Falls Park’s elegant suspension footbridge, a favorite spot for an evening stroll from downtown, or the rushing Reedy River Falls below the bridge.” Other urban greenspaces included on the “Best City Parks” list are in New York City, San Diego, Houston, Seattle, New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Atlanta, Washington DC, Denver, San Francisco, Chicago and Phoenix.

musical genres including rock’n’roll, blues, jazz and reggae, according to Will Young, special events coordinator for the City of Greenville. e amphitheatre venue is ideal for picnicking, so come early with a basket, lawn chair and/or blanket, says Young, but remember pets are not allowed at City special events.

Young says Gimme the Gig was designed as a fresh way to promote the long-running annual series. More than 30 bands submitted music videos in the hopes of scoring a paid Reedy River gig. Fans were given the opportunity to cast online votes for their favorite of fi ve fi nalists.

e Swingin’ Richards shot a video at On the Roxx, one of the band’s preferred places to play in downtown Greenville. “We took a risk and used a song we had only performed four times,” Gillmer says, “but it paid off !”

He says the trio used “every resource at our fi ngertips to get word of the voting out to our friends, fans and family,” and through savvy social media garnered Gimme the Gig

e Greenville-based trio – a favorite on the southeastern circuit – won Gimme the Gig, a contest to earn a play date at the Greenville Heritage FCU Reedy River Concerts.

“We pride ourselves on being a small band with big sound,” says percussionist Don Gillmer. With two acoustic guitars and a unique percussion drumset mix, e Swingin’ Richards brings its distinct style to the Peace Center Amphitheatre on Wednesday, Aug. 3, as the highlight of the summer-long Reedy River Concerts series. “We look forward to playing some of your favorite songs in ways you have never heard before – staying true to the music but putting a little spin on it to make it our own.”

Reedy River Concerts – presented every Wednesday from 7-9PM through the end of August – are all about free, outdoor entertainment showcasing regional and local acts in a variety of

votes from all over South Carolina as well as North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, even Michigan and Colorado.

“We are excited to have people coming in from all these states to see the show as well,” Gillmer says, adding that it’s already been a big year for The Swingin’ Richards, with shows lined up alongside national acts like A Vacant Soul, Star City Meltdown, Parmalee and Rehab. “We are VERY appreciative of all the support we have received.”

All total, the five Gimme the Gig finalists garnered more than 1,300 votes while generating plenty of publicity.

“This contest really helped promote our Facebook page as well as give us a new band we haven’t had before,” Young says. “It was nice because a lot of people who didn’t know about our event – but were fans of the bands that entered – learned about the Reedy River Concerts. It helped us get the word out about the series as a whole.”

Young expects an encore of the Gimme the Gig contest for future downtown music series. “Thirteen hundred votes is a lot between five bands,” he says, “and that was in just two weeks. I’m excited to see it grow.”

She’s been on the stage in one role or another since her acting debut way back in third grade, and Angie Price wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m at a loss when I’m not in a show,” she laughs. “Really, I’m not sure what to do with myself.”

Price will have no time to wonder this summer, as she’s just landed the lead role in the Upstate Shakespeare Festival’s upcoming production of “Cymbeline.” e romantic tragedy runs ursday through Sunday, July 14-Aug. 7, on an open-air stage in the heart of Falls Park.

Price has previously portrayed supporting characters – a fairy in “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” murderer #2 in “Richard III” and the nurse in “Romeo & Juliet” – but Imogene is her fi rst time as leading lady in USF’s popular twice-a-summer series.

“She’s diff erent than the roles I’ve been playing lately,” says Price, who majored in musical theatre at Coker College and was most recently seen as Magenta in Warehouse eatre’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” And while Imogene might easily come across as a goody-goody, Price says, “I want to bring some quirkiness and some passion to the part. I want her to be strong and interesting.”

e 2011 season does indeed feature “interesting” – and very diff erent – women who have very diff erent relationships with their leading men.

“Pairing ‘Cymbeline’ with ‘ e Taming of the Shrew’ makes for a great season,” says USF Director John Fagan. Whereas ‘Shrew’ is a rollicking battle of the sexes, with a scoundrel trying to “tame” a high-spirited woman, ‘Cymbeline’ is a romantic tragedy featuring a princess who – despite »

a scoundrel’s best efforts – is committed to proving her faithful love to her husband.

You can still catch most of the last two weekends of ‘Shrew,’ June 10-12, 16, 18-19 (note: there’s no performance June 17). One of the Upstate Shakespeare Festival’s missions is to ultimately present the bard’s entire canon, and Fagan says he’s anticipated doing ‘Cymbeline’ for many years.

Presented in a “fairy tale-esque setting,” ‘Cymbeline’ is brimming with many a typical Shakespearean devise – disguises, trickery, mistaken identities and, of course, poison – all poured into a “fun but convoluted plot,” Fagan says. “Phantasmagorical – that’s a word I like to use to describe the lunacy and craziness and fun that is ‘Cymbeline.’”

Attendance at the Festival averages upwards of 600 per show, with Saturdays always the most crowded. All performances begin at 7PM, with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs, blankets and/or pillows and come early – some suggest as early as 5PM – to claim the best spots.

“Parking is NOT an issue,” according to Fagan, who suggests play-goers utilize the lot at nearby County Square, which is just a short walk from Falls Park.

The Upstate Shakespeare Festival is free, but actors make the rounds – pillowcases in hand – to accept donations at the end of every performance. For more details, call 787-4016 or visit upstateshakespearefestival.org.

NEW YORK CITYThe High Line, built on a former elevated railway, is a unique public park that runs two stories above street level from the meatpacking district to Hell’s Kitchen. It can’t rival Central Park for green space (can anything?) but the High Line is a strong contender in the people-watching category. For those on the West Side, it’s a sweet spot for walking, picnicking, and checking out the ever-changing public art. thehighline.org

SAN DIEGOWith 17 museums, 20 gardens, and miles of trails, it’s easy to get overwhelmed (in a good way) at Balboa Park. Don’t miss the world-famous rose garden, in bloom from March through December, and the quirky tradition of lawn bowling (lessons available). balboapark.org

HOUSTONJust fi ve years ago, much of Discovery Green was a huge parking lot. Now it’s a 12-acre park with promenades, fountains, a playground, jogging trails, dog runs, and a lake (with remote-control sailboat races). discoverygreen.com

NEW ORLEANSYou can golf, boat, bike, or horseback ride – or pack a muffuletta and just picnic under City Park’s 600-year-old live oaks. neworleanscitypark.com

SEATTLEBird lovers have found a home in the city’s rugged Discovery Park. Located on 500 acres overlooking Puget Sound, the park is home to 270 different species. Plus, there are popular guided tours for one of the most common species: the novice bird watcher. seattle.gov/parks

ST. LOUISSeptember’s Great Forest Park Balloon Race, when 70 hot-air balloons launch from Central Field, may be the biggest

attraction, but on any fair-weather day you’ll fi nd tennis, golf, soccer, softball, and hiking in this 1,400-acre park. forestparkforever.org

PHILADELPHIAIt’s said that no matter where you are in Philadelphia, Fairmount Park is less than a mile away. The 9,200-acre park has something for every one: people-watching in Rittenhouse Square, biking along Kelly Drive, hiking in the Wissahickon, and in the winter, sledding at Belmont Plateau. fairmountpark.org

WASHINGTON, D.C.Rock Creek Park follows its namesake creek through the district, a path that includes wide swaths of wilderness for hiking and narrow slivers of urban running trails. Get your workout as you sightsee: the park skirts the National Zoo, the U.S. Naval Observatory, and the Kennedy Center. nps.gov/rocr

DENVERMany of the Mile High City’s 200-plus parks are interconnected by 80 miles (!) of paved, car-free urban trails. A cyclist’s dream. denvergov.org/parks

SAN FRANCISCOYes, Golden Gate Park has it all – unless you’re under the age of eight. Then you want to be at Yerba
