What makes us identify with and select one type of animal over another? We explored this and several other aspects of pet ownership in Scientific American MIND’s recent online survey. This is reflected in the incredibly heterogeneous responses we received from readers who, as it turned out, keep a remarkable array of pets. Nevertheless, a few patterns did emerge—particularly in answer to this question: Explain why you prefer cats, dogs, neither or both. Cat people tended to focus on practical reasons for loving felines, namely the lower maintenance demands. More than any other descriptive, the word “independent” dominated, perhaps because it both describes the feline personality and the ease of cat care. It came up a whopping 139 times in the explanations that the 520 self-described cat people gave for their preferences. Dog people, on the other hand, emphasized classic canine personality traits. Words such as “loyal,” “loving,” “affectionate” and “companions” came up repeatedly. Some more practical considerations came up as well, particularly allergies to cats that all but disqualified felines as pets. But it was clear that, above all, dog people valued the close interactions they have with their pets—a sharp contrast from cat people’s emphasis on independence. Although the majority of pet owners in our poll kept either a cat or a dog, more participants identified themselves as both cat and dog people than either or neither type. In their explanations these cat- and dog-loving people tended to emphasize that each species appeals to different parts of their personalities and that they are fond of many other kinds of animals as well. Personality data from poll participants also revealed a few patterns. We asked readers to rate, on a scale of 1 to 5, how strongly they identified with certain descriptors, such as assertiveness and empathy. As in previous studies and polls, we found that cat people tend to rate themselves as more reserved and quiet than dog people do. Findings like these support the notion that certain personality traits may predispose a person to choosing one pet over another. But our survey also found that on many measures these two archetypal pet owners were not so different. Their self-ratings of openness to new experiences and dependability, for example, were very similar. Although cats and dogs were by far the most popular pets, participants in our survey also reported keeping shrews, squirrels, potbellied pigs and fennec foxes (among other unusual animals). After dogs and cats, the most popular pets in our survey were fish, birds, rabbits, horses and turtles, in that order. Another piece of the pet preference puzzle is that, of course, many people keep more than one type of pet. We found a few pet-pairing trends. For example, more than 80 percent of horse owners also own a dog and, more surprisingly, 25 percent of snake owners also own a bird. An important caveat: our survey was informal, not scientific. In fact, rigorous research on the subject remains scarce. Even so, our findings contribute to a growing appreciation of the powerful bond between pets and people, and how much about it remains to be explored. from: www.scientificamerican.com

DOG AND CAT PEOPLE REVEAL WHYTHEY LOVE THEIR ANIMALSScientific American MIND’s online survey of pet owners uncovered some interesting results when people wereasked about their interspecies relationshipsBy Andrea Alfano

For many of us, family life is a multispecies affair—andalthough we don’t get to choose our relatives, we doget to pick our pets. What makes us identify with and

select one type of animal over another? We explored thisand several other aspects of pet ownership in ScientificAmerican MIND’s recent online survey.

If one thing is clear from the results, it’s that the answer iscomplex. This is reflected in the incredibly heterogeneousresponses we received from readers who, as it turned out, keep a remarkable array of pets. Nevertheless, a few patternsdid emerge—particularly in answer to this question:Explain why you prefer cats, dogs, neither or both.

Cat people tended to focus on practical reasons for lovingfelines, namely the lower maintenance demands. More than anyother descriptive, the word “independent” dominated, perhapsbecause it both describes the feline personality and the ease ofcat care. It came up a whopping 139 times in the explanationsthat the 520 self-described cat people gave for their preferences.

Dog people, on the other hand, emphasized classic caninepersonality traits. Words such as “loyal,” “loving,” “affectionate”and “companions” came up repeatedly. Some more practicalconsiderations came up as well, particularly allergies to catsthat all but disqualified felines as pets. But it was clear that, above all, dog people valued the close interactions theyhave with their pets—a sharp contrast from cat people’semphasis on independence.

Although the majority of pet owners in our poll kept eithera cat or a dog, more participants identified themselves asboth cat and dog people than either or neither type. In

their explanations these cat- and dog-loving people tendedto emphasize that each species appeals to different parts oftheir personalities and that they are fond of many otherkinds of animals as well.

Personality data from poll participants also revealed a few patterns. We asked readers to rate, on a scale of 1 to 5, how stronglythey identified with certain descriptors, such as assertivenessand empathy. As in previous studies and polls, we found thatcat people tend to rate themselves as more reserved and quietthan dog people do. Findings like these support the notionthat certain personality traits may predispose a person tochoosing one pet over another. But our survey also found thaton many measures these two archetypal pet owners were notso different. Their self-ratings of openness to new experiencesand dependability, for example, were very similar.

Although cats and dogs were by far the most popular pets, participants in our survey also reported keeping shrews, squirrels, potbellied pigs and fennec foxes (among otherunusual animals). After dogs and cats, the most popularpets in our survey were fish, birds, rabbits, horses and turtles, in that order.

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

What happened to that beautiful Denver weather? Idon’t know how to count periods of time if it isn’ttoday or yesterday. But I know it’s been COOOLD for along while, so cold for this ol’ country boy that Momand Dad are giving me pills now because my old brokenleg hurts when it never gets warm. Snow is fun for thefirst few days, but really now! I’m sure that there isgrass in the back yard, but you lose faith when youcan’t see something for a long time.

But, on a happier note, Dad is poring through thoseseed catalogs that come with that pesky mailman everyday. They get mad at me and Bandit when we bark atthe mailman, but what self-respecting dog doesn’t backwhen a uniformed stranger starts making little noisesoutside our front door.

I digress. Seeing Dad studying the seed catalogs itprobably means he will plan and plant another gardenthis year. I don’t care about the garden itself (unless heforgets to close the gate and I can get in and dig it up),but it makes Dad feel so good to work out there thatmy world is a lot more fun. Get it? Maybe you, like me,have trouble pondering deep meanings. But even thisignorant hayseed can notice how one thing seems tolead to another.

THE NEW YEAR

Gizmo and I have heard that we are now in “the new year”. As cats we don’t really pay attention to time otherthan knowing when it is time for breakfast or dinner. Our 2 leggers tell us when it is our birthday or somethingspecial is going to happen. Like last month when everyone left all us 4 leggers home for a whole week orwhen camping is going to start. But that is still not us knowing time only an immediate reaction to what isgoing on around us. However, I digress. I started out talking about the New Year and have decided that 2leggers are really silly. I checked into this “New Year” thing. It seems that they go out with lots of other 2leggers and eat lots of “junk food” (not sure what that is) drink lots of liquids that make them do funnythings and then they feel bad the next day. That does not seem like a good plan to me. Oh well, what can wedo, they are 2 leggers and never listen to cats who have much better sense.

The Christmas tree is down and things are almost back to normal. I hope that means we will start campingsoon because then I get to go along. During the non-camping time Mom and Dad go out to lunch with therest of their group and I have to stay home. I think we cats in the group should get together and have ourown luncheons. Not quite sure how that would work but it is something to think about.

Have any of you had experience with tiny 2 leggers? They are very strange and smell different. Ours just lieson her back and waves her arms, makes funny noises and kicks her feet. Yes, we did discover that she doeshave legs but she never uses them to move. If she wants to be moved she just cries. Very strange. Gizmo andI will keep you posted on the tiny 2 legger and let you know what she does. We think kittens are much moreinteresting.

Guess that’s all for now. Catch you next month.

A LETTER FROMBOOTSIE

Dear Friends,

You probably don’t remember me.You called me Chocolate when I waswith you. I’m a part Siamese kitty, except for my white feet. My newperson asked me to send you thispiece of paper. He said you coulduse it for something important.

I don’t know why my first personsput me outside. I don’t know why they drove away and didn’t comeback. I waited for them for so longbut they never came for me. I got sohungry and so cold. And there weremean cats that lived in the alley. Iwas really scared. Then a very niceperson brought me to you. You tooksuch good care of me. You lookedafter my medical needs, gave megood food, and a warm place to stay.

Then in 2006, two very nice personscame and took me to a foreverhome. They call me Boots orBootsie, probably because of mywhite feet. I’m so happy now. Mynew persons love me. They pet meand rub my tummy, which makesme purr a lot. They give me toysand play with me.

I want you to know I have a wonderful forever home now. I’mnever afraid, or cold, or hungry anymore. Thank you for takingsuch good care of me while I waswith you.

With love,Bootsie

SOME OF THE REASONSWE LOVE OUR DOGS

They make great cuddle buddies. When they sleep, they sleep so soundly. They eat your socks. They follow you around like a puppy…oh wait! They spin in circles when they’re excited. They eat in world record speed. They are our motivation to exercise. They run circles around the house. They love their squeaky toys, even if you don’t.They make great couch warmers! They look at themselves in mirrors. They run in their sleep. They are always happy to see you, no matter what.

SOME OF THE REASONSWE LOVE OUR CATS

Because even though they sometimes act a bit stand-offish... Deep down they can be major softies. Because sometimes they REALLY want to be left alone ...... And other times they simply CANNOT be away from you. They are brave little adventurers ... ... Who are also afraid of the vacuum cleaner. They are spring-loaded containers of energy ... ... Who can chill harder than anyone around. Because they know how to use boxes for good ...... and evil. They can stretch very tall ... ... or melt into a puddle. Because they hate bath water ... ... But, for some reason, LOVE sink water. They can be very helpful ... ... And very distracting.
