2014 was a very busy year for Dolly Parton. Earlier in the year, Dolly released her new album entitled ‘Blue Smoke.’ In the summer of the same year, she fi nished her Blue Smoke World Tour. During her tour, 55+ Magazine was given the opportunity to participate in a virtual press conference from Stockholm (Dolly was performing there) with 70 other journalists from around the globe. Our magazine was honored to be chosen to be one of the few to ask Dolly a question. We are going to open this article with this question and Dolly’s response.

55+: “We have a 55+ population of about 2 million living here in Southeast Florida and they would love to know how you maintain such an abundant positive energy over 5 decades of your career and secondly, you just performed ‘Jolene’ at the Glastonbury Festival 40 years after its release in 1974. How does it make you feel that the song is still so recognized?”

DP “Well, fi rst of all, ‘Jolene’, I am just so proud of that little song. A lot of people don’t realize it but that’s the song that I have written that has been recorded more than any other song by other artists throughout the world. I still enjoy singing it and it makes me feel great. That song…. I think it’s just so easy to sing… it’s got that bouncy little feeling and I think that a lot of people relate to it. So I am very proud of ‘Jolene’ and I am very glad people are still liking

Dolly’s new album, ‘Blue Smoke’ was number 42 in her incredible music career. All her albums have reached Top 10 status on the country charts with 6 (so far) reaching number 1. ‘Blue Smoke’ was released in many countries during her Blue Smoke World Tour and it is her highest-charting solo

Dolly is one of the most-honored female country performers of all time. The list would be quite lengthy if we were to mention all of the awards given to Dolly. Some of these include Grammys, American Music Awards, and Country Music Association Awards for her work in the music industry. The list would be even longer to include all of her nominations. She is very proud of the songs she has written and when asked, Dolly said, “I’ve always been a writer. My songs are the door to every dream I’ve ever had and every success I’ve ever achieved.”

Dolly also has many nominations for her work in fi lms. Some of her memorable performances included roles in ‘9 to 5,’ ‘The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,’ ’ Steel Magnolias’ and ‘Joyful Noise,’ just to


name a few. She received two Oscar nominations, one for writing the title tune to ’9 to 5’ and the other for ‘Travelin’ Thru’ from the fi lm ‘Transamerica.’

Early YearsDolly was born in Sevier County,

Tennessee to Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer, and his wife Avie Lee. Parton’s father paid the doctor who helped deliver her with a bag of oatmeal. She was fourth of twelve children and she has described her family as being “dirt poor”. Her early songs: ‘Coat of Many Colors’ and ‘In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)’ recalled her family’s poverty. They lived in a rustic, one-room cabin in Locust Ridge just north of the Greenbrier Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains, a predominantly Pentecostal area. Music played an important role in her early life. Dolly began performing as a child, singing on local radio and television programs. The day after she graduated from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville. Her initial success in Nashville came as a songwriter. Her fi rst country single, “Dumb Blonde” (one of the few songs that she recorded but did not write), reached #24 on the country music chart in early 1967, followed the same year with “Something Fishy”, which went to #17. The two songs were part of her fi rst full-length album, ‘Hello, I’m Dolly.’

Cuando las viviendas asistidas se crearon por primera vez, era como una comunidad de jubilados. Si una persona tenia problemas de incontinencia o requeria una atención más personal, tenían que abandonar el centro e ir a un sanatorio. Finalmente, el gobierno y la industria de la salud trabajaron juntos para crear comunidades reguladas para proporcionar la atención adecuada con el fi n de satisfacer las necesidades de cada individuo.

Una vez que las instalaciones de viviendas asistidas se establecieron, la necesidad de otro tipo de alojamiento alternativo salieron a la luz, tales como centros Independiente, Hogares de Cuidado Familiar y Unidades de Demencias. When Assisted Living Facilities were fi rst created, they were more like a Retirement community. If a person had incontinence issues or required more personal care, they would have to leave the facility and go to a Skilled Nursing Home. Eventually, the government and the healthcare industry worked together to create regulated communities to provide appropriate care in order to meet the needs of each individual.

Once the Assisted Living Facilities were established, the need for other types of alternative housing came to light such as Independent Living, Adult Family Care Homes and Alzheimer-Dementia Units. In Florida, small, six bed facilities (private homes) are gaining popularity due to the fact that they can provide even more personalized care. They are licensed and regulated by the same agencies that govern all of the Assisted Living Facilities, regardless of size.

Many people do not completely understand the concept of, or what is actually offered in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF).

A prospective candidate for an ALF is usually in need of at least one or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Some of the ADLs are showering, dressing, toileting and medication management. The staff of an ALF is trained to provide assistance with all of those ADLs along with housekeeping, laundry, transportation and social activities.

Most facilities are paid for by private, “out of pocket” funds.


However, fi nancial assistance can be found through the Veteran’s Administration, Long Term Care Insurance, and state programs, if certain requirements are met.

Overall, the best way to describe

Assisted Living is to think of it as a bridge between living at home and living in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Assisted Living has a residential focus with a home-like environment while a Nursing Home is primarily a medical institution.

On a personal note……..Many families feel they want to

keep their loved one “at home” for as long as possible. The truth is, keeping them home may not be in their best interest. If left at home alone or with just one caregiver for only a few hours a day, Mom or Dad will not get the social interaction they need.

The most important thing is to never compromise the care of your loved one. If being “home” can no longer provide the adequate care physically and emotionally, then it’s time to give them what they are so deserving of………a carefully chosen Assisted Living Facility. •

En agosto de 1977, como un reciente traslado de Long Island, Nueva York, acepté el cargo de Coordinador de la Comunidad con el Area Agency on Aging del Condado de Broward. Como asesor docente y de relaciones públicas, sentí que el trabajo y sus responsabilidades sería un reto interesante!. In August of 1977, as a recent transplant from Long Island, New York, I accepted a position as Community Coordinator with the Area Agency on Aging of Broward County. As a teacher and public relations consultant, I sensed that the job and its responsibilities would be an interesting challenge! My dedication to seniors also was a major factor in my decision making process.

Over the past 37 years, Broward’s year-round elder population has swelled from 137,000 to close to 382,000! My job became that of Executive Director in 1986. Since then, the challenges associated with the position have augmented tremendously. Today, as I recall the early years, when governmental funding was ample and fl owing, I marvel as the staff’s abilities to stretch their time and talents toward accomplishing positive results for those in need.

The Board, Advisory Council, and Projects are partners who constantly strive to benefi t Senior Browardians. As the “Older Old” population swells into the 90’s and 100’s, history is writing new pages that describe novel methodologies for maintaining older persons in their accustomed environments,


thereby avoiding premature nursing home placement.

I invite people to join my personal quest for positive answers to the aging dilemma, for no one can, or should walk the path to success alone. Contributing fi nancially to the Aging and Disability Resource Center is a help, contacting legislators, on the local, state, and national levels to seek increased appropriations is a bonus; and recognizing that what once was a sandwich generation, now is a double or triple decker menu item, is a leap into the recipe of hope for humanity. •

As Sheriff, I want to ensure the Broward Sheriff’s Offi ce is doing everything we can for our county’s seniors while honoring and respecting their i n d e p e n d e n c e . The Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline

is saving lives by providing a free daily telephone call to seniors age 60 and over who live alone in Broward County.

In March 2013, Irene Bell was standing on a stool in her kitchen, stretching for a treat for her service dog when she lost her balance and fell. Irene, who lives alone, was hurt and couldn’t move. When Irene missed her 9 a.m. call from Broward 2-1-1, a BSO deputy was dispatched.

Without 2-1-1 Irene might not have gotten the help she needed. Here’s how it works: three calls are placed to the senior’s home within an hour. If there is no response, Broward 2-1-1 Senior Touchline alerts BSO and a deputy is sent to the residence immediately.

The daily call counselor also establishes a caring, reliable relationship. The counselor can connect seniors with agencies and organizations that can provide needed food, transportation, or required medication.

El benefi cio de los Veteranos está diseñado para dar asistencia fi nanciera y cubrir el costo de la atención personal en el hogar, en un centro de asistencia o en un centro especializado.

El benefi cio es para los veteranos y cónyuges sobrevivientes que requieren un cuidador en al menos dos de las Actividades de la Vida Diaria (AVD). Algunos de los AVDs son vestirse, bañarse, cocinar, comer, asearse, transporte, etc

Este benefi cio se llama AID. El veterano o el cónyuge sobreviviente no tiene que devolver el dinero o pagar impuestos sobre él.

Existen ciertos requisitos que hay que cumplir para poder recibir este benefi cio. Algunos de ellos son:

1. Tiene que haber cumplido por lo menos 90 días de servicio activo y uno de esos días debe ser durante el tiempo de guerra.

2. Debe tener algo más que una baja deshonrosa.

3. El Cónyuge sobreviviente deberá haber estado casado en el momento de su fallecimiento.

4. Debe necesitar ayuda con al menos dos AVD.

5. Debe cumplir con los requsitos de ingresos y bienes por la VA.

6. Debe tener por lo menos 65 años de edad o incapacitado totalmente.

The Veteran’s benefi t is designed to provide fi nancial assistance to help cover the cost of long term care in the home, in an Assisted Living Facility or in a Skilled Nursing Home.

The benefi t is for Veterans and surviving spouses who require a caregiver in at least two of the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Some of those ADLs are dressing, bathing, cooking, eating, grooming, transportation, etc.

This benefi t is called Aid and Attendance and a Veteran or a surviving spouse never has to pay it back or pay taxes on it.

There are certain requirements that one has to meet in order to receive this benefi t. Some of them are:

1. Must have served at least 90 days of active duty and one of those days must be during war time.

2. Must have anything other than a dishonorable discharge.

3. Surviving spouse must have been married to a Veteran at the time of his/her passing.

4. Must need assistance with at least two ADLs.

5. Must meet income and asset criteria required by the VA.

6. Must be at least 65 years old or totally disabled.

Por desgracia, los amigos de una persona que es diagnosticada con Alzheimer no socializan con ellos y son aislados con sólo la compañia de la persona que los cuida. Este tipo de servicio es muy importante en las primeras etapas de la enfermedad de Alzheimers cuando el paciente todavía está consciente de sus alrededores y está tratando con la realidad de padecer esta enfermedad.

Si conoces una persona que pueda donar unas horas a la semana para ofrecerle la Amistad a un cliente de mayor edad, por favor déjele saber de nuestro programa de acompañantes…también dígaselo a sus amigos en su iglesia o sinagoga. •

We are looking for individuals to volunteer their time to be a companion to one of our clients. We especially need bi-lingual volunteers and we’re looking for a “few good men.” There are clients on our waiting list who could benefi t greatly from male companionship or someone that speaks their native language.

Unfortunately, often when someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, their friends no longer socialize with them, and they become isolated with only the company of a caregiver. This type of service is important in the early stages when the patient is still aware of their surroundings and is dealing with the realization that he/she has this disease.

If you know an empathetic person who could provide a few hours a week to befriend a senior client, please let them know about our companion program ….. And mention it to your friends at church or synagogue, too! •
