Fermilab GIS, light blue indicates ICW

and darker blue indicates DWS

• Purpose, what is Domestic Water

– Supplies water for personal,

household, or sanitary

purposes

• Water is bought from city of

Warrenville

• The DWS system is vital for

Fermilab’s operation.

• Fermilab previously has hired

consultants to update the DWS and

ICW models. In 2019 a SIST intern

worked on the ICW model

The Domestic Water Service System

Page 3: Domestic Water Service System Model Update and Analysis

• WaterGEMS is a hydraulic modeling software

– Used to analyze, design, and optimize water distribution systems

• Software Tools

– Steady-state analysis

– Automated Fire Flow simulations

– Scenario management

– Water quality analysis

• Scope

– Focus on steady-state and fire flow conditions

– In compliance with NEPA and IEPA

WaterGEMS Software

• Examine for discrepancies and update the model to reflect current and

near future DWS system

• Updates include

– IERC

– PIP-II

• Run scenarios and determine effectiveness

PIP-II

Page 8: Domestic Water Service System Model Update and Analysis

• With proper management and operation setpoint changes, DWS system

can handle near future demands

• WaterGEMS model is up to date with DWS system.

• DWS model provide overview of the viability of demand increases in the

system

• Important to note that the model does not account for all factors

• It facilitates studying how layout and demand changes will affect the DWS

system

• Possible new source for water in the future
