OUR NEW

Helen Coldewey was born in Mitchell County at home on October 4, 1936, and

spent most of her growing up years in and around Loraine, TX. Helen is the

oldest girl in a family with six children - 2 boys and 4 girls who are all still living.

She is the daughter of Roy & Delia Richard, who passed away in 1989. Her early years were spent

working on the farm, chopping and picking cotton, and baby-sitting her younger siblings. When she

wasn’t doing chores, she enjoyed reading, singing with the family, playing basketball & volleyball.

Helen was baptized at 12 years old at a gospel meeting in Stanton by Howard Peacock. One of her

second cousins taught singing schools and she learned to read music, which led to her singing in a

quartet with brother Donald Richard and two friends.

Helen met the love of her life when she was a senior in high school while cheering at a football game.

Maurice Coldewey had just returned home from Korea and kept pestering her to go with him after the

game to get a coke. They were married in June 1955, and were married for 56 years. Maurice

passed away in 2011.

Before having children, Helen worked at Clark Brothers Industries as a secretary. Later when the

children were in school, she worked for Camp Fire Girls, and MISD as a school secretary. Her

hobbies are singing, reading & crocheting. Her favorite Bible passage is Philipians 4:4-7.

Helen & Maurice were blessed with 3 children. James & his wife, Joyce, live in Lubbock and have

two children, Erin & Kevin. Greg & his wife, Jeanne, live in San Antonio and have two daughters

Amy & Amanda. Their daughter, Lisa Stubblefield & her husband, Kurtis, live in Dallas. Helen also

has a great grandbaby, Miles, who is a delight to them all.

The Coldeweys decided to move to the country to raise their family. At one time or another they had

a cow, a horse, pigs, geese, chickens, and ducks. Church was always very important to the family.

They were involved with whatever was going on at church and also were active in sports, Girl Scouts,

and 4H.

After Helen’s grandchildren got old enough, she started what she called “Camp Helen” for them and

their cousins. Camp lasted a week and was filled with fun activities such as swimming, acting out

skits (which was one of their favorites), learning songs to sing around the singing tree, learning Bible

verses, and doing service projects. It was memorable for all and the kids (grown now) still talk about

that time fondly.

Helen has attended Main St. Church of Christ for 64 years and is a delightful person that you will

want to get to know.
