The franchise industry has an inherent problem you need to know about. You see, you and I could sit down over a cup of tea, (or preferably a nice Chardonnay when the pubs reopen) and we could think up a business, give it a name and launch it as a franchise opportunity the following day. There’s no one to stop us. The UK has three trade associations, none are regulatory bodies and although their hearts may be in the right place they can’t do anything to stop us either. We could just crack on and start selling our new fledgling franchise opportunity. It is an unregulated market and the UK lags behind many continental fran-chise markets as a result. I wish it were different.

With that in mind I would suggest that it’s a good idea to get professional help. Better still free professional help. That’s where Lime Licensing Group comes in. Could You Benefit From The New Way To Grow Your Business?

You have probably been to countless seminars and read numerous books on growing a business, then if you have been lucky to actually implement anything you have uncovered, you will undoubtably be looking at the three most common ways of growing most businesses:

1. Get some more new clients/cus-tomers (lots of different sectors like to call them different names!)

2. Get your current clients to visit you more often (whether this is online, instore or maybe face to face)

3. Get your clients to spend more at each visit (this can mean more as in higher revenue) or it could mean that you ‘cross-sell’ as you see fit because the relationship develops and you understand their ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ better to position them.

Do these three ways to grow a busi-ness seem familiar? Of course, all of them require marketing effort, typ-ically paid for, so ideally with some form of tracking mechanism required to ensure you are getting a healthy return-on-investment, otherwise you will see it as a cost rather than investment! However, let us assume for a moment that you have a proven and successful model, and as such, you have enjoyed the early stages of

business growth and all the glory that comes with it, so you are starting to benefit from a better income than you did when you were employed, prob-ably updated your car to something that resembles one that you had been drooling over that a former colleague might have been driving around in and even starting to be more adventurous on the property front! There is a new way to grow that most others have probably not even thought was appli-cable to them or their business…

Have a think about the merits of franchising your business for a moment…

Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean you want to turn your busi-ness into the famous ‘Golden Arches’ but actually there are similarities on where you could end up! Why would you want to franchise your business?

We can talk about this subject for many hours, however, for the purpos-es of this article, think about franchis-ing as the following...

• You have an appetite to grow the business and build a network

• You are willing to grow your busi-ness via franchisees in other loca-tions copying what you have already done (because franchising is NOT for everyone!)

Sounds too good to be true right?

It is fair to say that franchising your business is just as easy to get wrong as it easy to do it correctly, however, a methodological approach always wins the day and there is guidance available if you don’t have sufficient resources, this can often be weeks to get you ready with the right documentation rather than months, which again is against popular belief

Selling your franchise

used, but finding a buyer can be very time consuming, so many business-es will use a Business Broker to help them. The broker will charge a com-mission on a successful sale, but this is outweighed by the fact that they take away the chore of dealing with hope-fully many enquiries, and should en-sure that only serious potential buyers come to the table.

Once a buyer has been found, before you give them any confidential infor-mation, they should sign a Non-Dis-closure or Confidentiality Agreement. Once this has been signed negotiations can commence. It is advisable to use a Franchise Solicitor to draw up the relevant legal documents needed for the legal transfer of the business.

Completion of the sale is on the day that all of the funds have been trans-ferred and the new franchisee takes over. This is usually after they have completed the Franchisor’s training course.

One final piece of advice. Be patient as you may not find a buyer immediately.

Firstly, inform the Franchisor of your wish to sell, check the resale terms of your franchise agreement and get the ball rolling.

Remember that the Franchisor will have the final say on who you sell the business to, and in some cases they may be able to help you find a buyer.

Potential buyers will want to find out a lot about the business so make sure you have the information to hand. This would include trading history, turnover and profit figures, details of any staff, property or equipment, access to pub-lished accounts, and most importantly the asking price.

There are many ways to value a busi-ness but the most common is a mul-tiple of future earnings. Remember, a business is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it, so be realistic in your valuation.

A Franchise Prospectus is useful and is designed to help sell the business. It has to represent an accurate view of what is on offer, and should not contain any misleading or false information. Marketing your business can take on a number of forms. Social media and word of mouth are now commonly

Google Ads | How to WIN with a smaller budget than your competitors

‘Google Ads compete on budget’ – Fortunately this isn’t true. It’s not just about budget. Google is not the world’s biggest search engine just because it collects anyone’s money. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Google is the world’s leading search engine because of the service it provides. That service is helping people find what they’re looking for in the best quality possible and from the most credible sources. When scanning ads which are bidding on keywords, Google has a key factor which it uses in order to shuffle and lay out the ads in a particular order. This algorithm is called Ad Rank.

Google calculates your ad rank by multiplying your max cost per click bid by your quality score for that ad auction. So if you’re beating your competitors on ad QUALITY, but your budget is less than there’s, you can still surpass them even if they bid more than twice what you bid per click.

Quality matters the most with search engines. Google doesn’t make money just by accepting any and all payments – it makes money by giving people what they’re searching for in the best quality as far as relevance to what they search and credibility of the source, making money is secondary because if no X then there is no Y.

Quality is determined by many factors. These factors include:

Landing page design / Landing page content / Headlines / Meta description / Website quality / Mobile-optimisation / Page load speed / Security of website / Imagery on website / low bounce rates and much more…

If your promoting dog collars for puppies, make sure your landing page (the destination of your ad) is about dog collars for puppies. Most people make the mistake of driving ads to their website’s homepage, there are fundamen-tal errors with this in most cases. You see, relevance matters. Staying with the above example for a second, say you have somebody searching for ‘dog collars for puppies’, and they click an ad which leads them to a generic pet supplies website… Compare this to another ad which leads somebody to a page specifically dedicated to dog collars for puppies… Exactly what they searched for. Google is absolutely going to rank the second ad higher in the ad results. Consider your ad quality and results will be far greater as a result.

Andy: Riaz, how many managed or franchised locations does the company have now? Riaz: We are a fully franchised company with over 35 franchised territories in the UK and Ireland.

Andy: How long has the company been going? Riaz: 4x4 Vehicle Hire’s first branch was opened in 2007 in Buckingham by Kirsty Dennis, with our first franchise branch in 2012.

Andy: When did you acquire the master rights Riaz? Riaz: In February 2017 my team and I were granted the Master Franchise Licence for 25 years.

Andy: In a nutshell Riaz, describe life as a master franchisor.Riaz: My day to day life as a franchisor is all about growing the brand, the network and helping move each franchisee business in the right direction. Since 2017 we have seen an increase in the number of franchisees and franchised areas. We have seen our highest revenue year since the formation of the franchise in 2019.

Andy: Where do you want to see the brand in a few years time? Riaz: Our aim is to grow 4x4 Vehicle Hire into a recognised brand in the UK, Ireland and hopefully one day internationally.

Andy: Have you added to your team as you’ve expanded?Riaz: In November 2018 we appointed our very own Head of Digital Marketing which has seen our growth from client enquiries to franchise enquiries scale to new levels. Head of Digital Bal Aktar is responsible for marketing the franchisees business via social media, online and print.

Andy: What about your future plans?Riaz: Our future looks exciting, Kirsty and I would also say impressive. 2020 will see the launch of our new website which will be focused on giving our customers the option to book a vehicle directly on the website. We will be launching our very own daily rental software platform called Total which will help the franchisee understand the data and numbers behind their business in a lot more detail. Of course, as part of our DNA we will be recruiting new franchisees for the remaining territories which is always an exciting process from start to finish.

Andy: It looks like there are some exciting times for 4x4 Vehicle Hire and also for the franchising industry as a whole.

Why franchisees should think INSIDE the box

Thinking outside the box doesn’t always work in franchising.Business guru’s and coaches will often encourage thinking outside of the box. So called “blue sky thinking”. Well that may work for some but it’s not your typical franchisor’s cup of tea. When you join a franchise brand there’s no need for all that risky time consuming experimentation. If you think inside the box all the answers are usually there for you in franchis-ing. The franchise framework to work from is well documented within your manual so, you could do a lot worse than just follow that to the letter. It’s a perk of franchising that you follow the well trodden path where repli-cating what works is already proven. But, all good businesses never sit still do they? Your inner entrepreneur has a restless mind for improvements, short cuts and the like.

So, when your mind starts to wan-der about improving your franchise the best place to start is actually by thinking inside the box. Have you actually nailed the proven part be-fore trying to think of improvements? Let’s be honest, if you can’t replicate the bits that are proven to work you

shouldn’t really be trying to replicate what’s not proven. Assuming that you’re a success already though, see this as an opportunity to refine what you’ve got within the franchisor’s blueprint.

The best Franchisors will listen to you even though technically, hey even legally speaking, your role as a franchisee is to follow the well trod-den path. You see your franchisor has already fallen flat on their face, wasted money and ended up learning a lot before they got to where they are now. That’s what has gone into your franchise. So don’t think you can im-mediately reinvent the wheel. If that’s what you want to do then don’t buy a franchise – go sail your own ship somewhere else.

There are exceptions though and all good franchisors will listen to your crazy ideas and your clever ones. I was sad to hear of the death of Michale Delligatti a few years back. You’ve probably never heard of him but he’s the guy who invented the Big Mac. He was a Mcdonalds franchisee at the time. He did follow the format and created the business, he was a success, and then he improved it. Mcdonalds were wise to listen to him. You’ll notice though that he already

We’ll notice it, consider it, look for the proof of it and then we might spend money on it. Like your own franchisor we’ve spent years optimising how we set up franchise networks and recruit franchisees for our clients. We’ve seen many new consultants come and go over the years. What works works, we replicate that. Lime’s business has evolved logically with the input of a great team of our own franchisees who perfect what they do and then shape the business going forward, all within a framework that we all know works well. So, as a franchise owner, prove you can cut it first, inside the box - and then bring your own unique value, that’s when your franchisor will really listen to you.

One of the things we do at Lime Licensing Group is to help franchisors to optimise franchise networks. We also discuss initial and ongoing training and even suggest a minimum contact strategy. When you join a franchise the franchisor will invest their time teaching you what to do and how to do it. Some franchisor training is a matter of a few days, some takes many weeks. You’ll be a newbie which means not everything will sink in first time. Therefore many franchisors extend the training well into the distance with you. So that’s an initial training period followed by a long hand hold going forward.

An Operational manual details the day to day operations and what you are supposed to be doing all the time. A franchise agreement details the legal engagement and contractual terms. Hopefully a member of the franchisors staff preaches the gospel to you regularly once you’ve been trained. Repetition is the master of skill and all franchisors want you to learn the format. My advice to you is to learn the format, memorise the

in the glory. As soon as it fails, as it sometimes does, it’s a rare franchisee who holds his or her hands up and says, “its me, I’m crap at it”. Far easier to blame anyone else, or everyone else. So, remember you won’t ever get there unless you start it. It takes the three “c’s” courage, capital and commitment. Don’t ever forget there are no guarantees. I often hear myself saying that Franchisors can guarantee the process, but not the profit. The demographic should be there in your chosen location, the demand, brand, marketing inven-tory, CRM, stock, pricing etc etc all those things should be uniform. Often the only variable is you. Think about that for a minute.

I have a Wayne Rooney analogy, or maybe it should be a Harry Kane analogy these days. You see hard work isn’t enough either. You need to be up to the task. Have the right skill set. The point is if Jose Marinio said to me, “Andy, here’s £350,000 a week to come and play football for Tottenham” I’d say yes and no one would try harder than me. But would I be as good as Harry Kane? No. Obviously. So hard work isn’t enough and it’s a mutual responsibility be-tween franchisor and franchisee to establish that the capability is there. But you still haven’t got a prayer without taking a shot at it.

So with all that in mind, shying away from the challenge won’t start the busi-ness. You’ll fail before you started. But it’s true also there is merit in a good job, but is that what you’ll look back on with pride when you’re 80? Trust me on this, you’ll wish you’d started a business and not taken the “safe route” by working for someone else. And the safest route in self employment is .... franchising.

It’s that word “you” that is the most important word in that quote. Or in my world of franchise brands, ideas and pipe dreams nothing matters more than just taking the shot, which is actually committing to starting a business in the first place. How many shots have you taken, any?

I’ve been blessed with working with some amazing entrepreneurs over the years. Some of Lime Licensing Group’s clients have built huge multi million pound businesses off the back of franchising with our help. Their franchisees similarly have profited greatly by the entrepreneurship, mentoring and sup-port of our clients. Thriving by learning from someone who knows how to monetise a business. But you’ve gotta take the first step yourself because without actually starting your franchise in the first place no one earns a dime. As the old saying goes “you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink”. All Franchisors know this. Are you one of those people?
