TimelineThe boys see weird images during the day, which Piggy dismisses them as mirages.

Obsessed with hunting, Jack paints his face with clay and charcoal to camouflage himself and enters the forest to hunt, accompanied by several boys.

Ralph and Piggy sees a ship, but also saw that the signal fire has gone out.

Ralph and a few others rush to the top of the mountain to relight the fire, but the ship has already left.

Ralph is angry with Jack for not lighting the signal fire.

TimelineJack and the hunters return from the forest covered with blood and carrying a dead pig while chanting a weird song.

Ralph scolds Jack for his irresponsibility, but Jack was too excited with his first kill that he did not care too much about Ralph’s complaints.

Piggy scolds Jack shrilly, and Jack slaps him hard, causing Piggy’s glasses to fall off with one of the lenses broken.

Jack finally admits his mistake and apologizes to Ralph, but he did not apologize to Piggy for breaking his glasses

Ralph relights the fire using Piggy’s glasses and at that moment, Jack feels bitter towards Ralph.

TimelineThe hunters’ roast the pig and shares the meat to the rest of the boys, and dances wildly around the fire to celebrate their kill.

Seeing the hunters’ dance, Ralph decides to call an assembly and walks back to the beach alone.

Characterisation - Ralph

Symbol of civilization Still concerned of being rescued and cares a lot

about it. However, in this chapter he is also overpowered my emotions as not to think if it is totally the fault of Jack and their future relationship before throwing negative comments at him alone. And when Jack apologizes, Ralph refuses to pass a decent answer.

“Oh god, oh god!” (Pg 85)“I was chief; and you are going to do what I said.

You talk. You can’t even build huts – then you go off hunting and let out the fire”(Pg 88)

“Yet Ralph’s throat refused to pass one. He resented, as in an addiction to Jack’s behavior, a verbal trick.” (Pg 90)

Characterisation - PiggyIn this chapter, Piggy is shown as weak and

defenseless. Unlike Ralph, Piggy gets easily bullied and overpowered by Jack, which also shows that Piggy is not good in leadership but only a sign of intelligence as he was bullied.

“stuck his fist into Piggy’s stomach…‘Would you, would you? Fatty!’…smacked Piggy’s head” (Pg 89)

“Piggy and the parody was so funny that the hunters began to laugh.” (Pg 89)

Characterisation - SimonSymbol of human goodness. He treats the

littluns with extreme care and treasures nature more than anyone else. He is a symbol of holiness and the bright side of human. He likes to be alone and often wanders into the forest. As such, he is gradually ostrasiced by other children.

From Jack:“He glared at Simon.‘Take it!’” (Pg 92)

Characterisation - JackJack got very obsessed with all the killings and the

fact that he get the boys at the fire to join hunting shows that he did not care of the fire at all. He have painted faces in this chapter and tends to be more heartless in killing a pig and even do not feel guilty of breaking Piggy’s glasses. From this chapter is a warning and a foresight to the evilness of Jack Merridew – and he wants people to follow him.

“Kill the pig, cut her throat, spill her blood!” (Pg 86)“Jus’ you wait – yah!” (Pg 90)“Then Jack leapt to his feet, slashed off a great hulk of

meat and flung it down at Simon’s feet” (Pg 92)

Reason and EmotionREASON: Simon, Ralph and PiggyEMOTION: Jack and RogerIn the beginning the children were all bounded

by a sense of reason. However in this chapter we see emotion taking

over. After Piggy irritated Jack, Jack responded by openly hitting him. In the previous chapters he only verbally abused him and not to a great extent. However by the end of this chapter we see that Jack has no qualms about intensifying the abuse and even physically hurts him.

Symbol – The Signal FireSymbol of the children’s link to civilisation. At the beginning, the children were all

bounded by reason – they attended to the signal fire as they all knew it was their only chance of escaping the island.

However as savagery gradually takes over, Jack becomes more and more obsessed with hunting and loses interest in civilisation quickly. Therefore he becomes irresponsible and does not tend to the signal fire.

Symbol – ConchNot mentioned much in the chapter. We still

see signs of civilisation in this quote:

“They [the littluns] obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was old enough o be a link with the adult world of authority” (Page 75)

Setting – the islandAt the beginning everything about the island

seemed very idyllic. Everything about the island was perfect and there was even an allusion to the Garden of Eden.

However in Chapter 4 the island starts to become darker and less perfect. Throughout the book the island disintegrates; it acts as an indicator of how savage the children have become.

In Page 73 we see that by night-time everything becomes scary and uncertain.
