When you think about how you will be remembered, consider the legacy you leave for future generations.

Carl Muckley, Sr. ’75 and ‘83, College of Liberal Arts did just that. Last year, the University was the beneficiary of an almost $4 Million bequest to enhance the Philosophy and History departments and establish the Donald K. Hanks and Joseph Logsdon Scholarships to honor Mr. Muckley’s mentors. The impact of his gift will be felt for generations to come. Mr. Muckley’s generosity opens doors for University of New Orleans students who are the first in their families to attend college and those who might not be able to otherwise pursue a college degree, forever changing the course of their lives. The Hanks Philosophy Scholarship will be funded into perpetuity. His gift will also provide resources for the Philosophy department to launch an online degree program, increasing student accessibility and enabling the department to remain competitive with their counterparts at other higher learning institutions. The history department will be able to expand its undergraduate scholarship program and invest in teaching and research. Mr. Muckley has always supported the University. In the early 1990s, he made an initial gift to honor Professor Joseph Logsdon and support an academic scholarship for an outstanding junior history major. The current bequest builds on that gift and will include an expanded undergraduate scholarship program, as well as investments in teaching and research.

Preservation in the Birthplace of Jazz

Nate and Priscilla Gordon are music lovers committed to preserving New Orleans’ rich musical heritage through the UNO Jazz Studies program and the Jazz at the Sandbar series. Nate is a former trumpeter who has played with big names in America’s musical heritage such as Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis, Jr. It is a perfect complement to Nate’s musical roots that he would support Jazz at the Sandbar, a performance series Downbeat Magazine calls “One of the best things going in America.” The program was established by jazz giant Ellis Marsalis in 1993 and is a part of the University’s commitment

to give students the opportunity to perform with professional musicians in venues around New Orleans and the world. The Gordons’ support enables the University to educate and inspire up-and-coming musicians, preserving our city’s musical traditions and ensuring a bright musical future.

THE SURPRISING POWER OF AN ANNUAL GIFTEven a modest gift has a powerful effect. An annual commitment of $200 has the same impact as a $4,000 endowment. Even more telling, alumni participation in annual giving, regardless of the amount of the gift, is critical to the University’s national profile and ranking and enriches the student and faculty experience. There are several ways alumni and donors can get involved: making an outright gift, annual pledge or stock distribution; participating in employee matching gift programs; dividing a larger gift into smaller pieces through payroll deduction giving. These forms of annual giving add immeasurable value to the school’s future.
