Message from the President The works of art gracing our front and back covers as well
as our feature article are wonderful examples of the remarkable
contribution our members and donors make to the National
Gallery through their donations.
The acquisition of Emily Carr’s Forest Landscape in 2004 was
made possible thanks to the generous support of our Circle
patrons. The acquisition of three Paul Strand photographs in
2003 and the restoration of Paolo Veronese’s Dead Christ
Supported by Angels struck a chord with hundreds of people
who donated from $20 to $900 to support their realization.
No member should ever feel that their donation might be
too modest. Each gift becomes amplified when it is one of
many, and options like monthly giving may make supporting
the National Gallery easier than you thought, as discussed in
our main feature.
On this note, I’m delighted to profile in these pages a long-
time member and donor, Doris Folkerson. Her lifelong passion
for art and her commitment to the Gallery are truly inspiring.
I also wish to recognize several patrons and partners whose
support will enrich the experience of visitors to the Gallery this
summer.
Thank you to The Albert and Temmy Latner Family
Foundation and the RBC Foundation, for generously support-
ing the publication of the catalogues for the exhibitions Scott
McFarland: A Cultivated View and Nomads, respectively.

On a sad note, we mourn the passing of our beloved friend
Kurt Waldele, Executive Chef, KW Catering. A generous man
and an award-winning chef, Kurt was an exceptional partner
of the National Gallery and the Foundation for close to twenty
years. If all his menus were a delight, his most memorable
achievement for the Foundation undoubtedly remains the
exquisite culinary experience he and his team created for the
Renaissance Ball we held in 2005. We extend our heartfelt
condolences to his family and loved ones, his staff at
the National Gallery and the National Arts Centre, and his
numerous colleagues.
To you, our dear readers, I wish a pleasant and restful
summer and many visits to the Gallery.

Donor In Profile
Growing up on the Prairies during the Depression, Doris
Folkerson did not know much about art. She still remembers
her embarrassment one day when some friends asked her
opinion about the Group of Seven. Mortified that she didn’t
know the Group, she vowed to learn all she could about art.
Art appreciation became a lifelong interest – one that she
instilled in her children and is delighted to now share with her
grand-children.
A member of the National Gallery and a loyal donor to the
Foundation for several years, Doris says “I love coming to the
Gallery and the openings with my family and my friends. The
architecture is so spectacular and I learn so much on each visit!
I am a widow and a pensioner so I can’t give very much, but I
want to do my part to support this wonderful place that’s
given me so much joy over the years.”

Les œuvres d’art qui ornent les couvertures avant et arrière
de notre bulletin ainsi que notre article principal sont de beaux
exemples de la remarquable contribution qu’apportent nos mem-
bres et donateurs au Musée grâce à leurs dons.
L'acquisition en 2004 de l’œuvre Paysage Forestier d’Emily
Carr a été rendue possible grâce à l’appui généreux des mécènes
du Cercle. L’acquisition de trois photographies de Paul Strand
en 2003 et la restauration de l'œuvre Christ mort soutenu par les
anges de Paolo Véronèse ont su toucher une corde sensible chez
des centaines de personnes, dont les dons variant de 20 $ à 900 $
ont permis au Musée de mener ces projets à bien.
Il serait bien malheureux que certains membres du Musée
pensent que leurs dons sont trop modestes, car la combinaison
des montants donne une toute autre ampleur aux dons indivi-
duels. De plus, comme nous le mentionnons dans notre article
principal, les options telles que les versements mensuels peuvent
faciliter l’appui apporté au Musée.
Je suis heureuse de vous présenter dans nos pages le profil
d’une membre et donatrice de longue date : Doris Folkerson. Sa
passion pour l’art et son engagement envers le Musée sont de
véritables sources d’inspiration.
J’aimerais également souligner l’appui de plusieurs mécènes
et partenaires qui contribuera à enrichir l’expérience des visiteurs
au Musée cet été.

En terminant, nous soulignons avec tristesse la disparition de
notre ami Kurt Waldele, chef principal de KW Catering. Un
homme d’une grande générosité et un chef lauréat de plusieurs
prix, Kurt a été un partenaire exceptionnel de la Fondation et du
Musée pendant près de vingt ans. Même si tous ses menus
savaient ravir, sa création la plus mémorable demeure sans
conteste l’exquise expérience culinaire préparée pour le Bal de la
Renaissance de la Fondation en 2005. Nous transmettons nos
condoléances les plus sincères à sa famille, à ses proches, à son
personnel du Musée et du Centre national des arts, ainsi qu’à ses
nombreux collègues.
Je vous souhaite, chers lecteurs, un été reposant et des plus
enrichissants ainsi que plusieurs visites au Musée.

Profil d’une donatrice
Dans sa jeunesse, passée dans les Prairies durant la
Grande Crise, Doris Folkerson ne connaissait à peu près
rien de l’art. Elle se souvient encore de la gêne qu’elle avait
ressentie lorsque quelques-uns de ses amis lui avaient
demandé son opinion au sujet du Groupe des sept – dont
elle ignorait l’existence. Se sentant grandement humiliée,
elle se promit d’apprendre tout ce qu’elle pourrait sur l’art.
L’appréciation de l’art est devenue une passion qu’elle
a su transmettre à ses enfants. Elle est maintenant ravie de
pouvoir également la partager avec ses petits-enfants.
De dire Doris, membre du Musée et fidèle donatrice à
la Fondation depuis plusieurs années : « J’aime me rendre
au Musée et assister aux inaugurations avec ma famille et
mes amis. L’architecture est si impressionnante et j’ap-
prends toujours quelque chose à chacune de mes visites!
Comme je suis maintenant veuve et pensionnée, je ne peux
pas donner beaucoup. Mais je tiens à faire ma part pour
aider cet endroit merveilleux qui m’apporte tant de joie! »

When Members DonateNearly six years ago, when the
Foundation launched a fundraising
campaign to support the National
Gallery’s acquisition of three engag-
ing photographs by Paul Strand, one
of the most influential photogra-
phers of the twentieth century, hun-
dreds of Members and Supporting
Friends answered our call, donating
anywhere from $20 to $900.
Two of the works acquired, Percé
Beach, Gaspé and Barn, Gaspé, would
go on to be featured in the 2007 exhi-
bition, Modernist Photographs of the
National Gallery of Canada, and have
since travelled to museums and fine
galleries across Canada through the
National Gallery’s travelling exhibi-
tion program.
This is but one example of the far-
reaching impact our Members,
Supporting Friends and Donors have
with their donations. Over the years,
their gifts have supported a myriad
of projects, each as exciting as the
other, from the well-known acquisi-
tion of seventeen important prints
and drawings from the Collection of
the 9th Earl of Dalhousie to the
restoration of Paolo Veronese’s
breathtaking Dead Christ supported by
Angels, and its presentation in
Ottawa this summer alongside sister
fragments to re-constitute the magnificent Petrobelli Altarpiece.
Donations have not only made possible the completion of the
writing of Colin McDonald’s unique Dictionary of Canadian Artists
but also allow the Gallery to offer March break and day camps,
year in, year out, introducing kids of diverse economic back-
grounds to the world of art.
Without such generosity, these acquisitions, restorations, in-
sights, and new experiences may not have been possible at all.
Members are often surprised to learn that their membership
fees cannot be directed to projects like these as they mostly serve
to cover the costs of servicing membership such as the free
subscription to Vernissage and exclusive Members’ Evenings.
This explains why the Foundation is consistently seeking your
donations and striving to make giving as easy and flexible as pos-
sible for you. For example, Supporting Friends choose to combine
their donation, which can range from $300 to $999, with their
membership purchase or renewal in one single payment.

Il y a bientôt six ans, lorsque la Fondation a lancé une cam-
pagne de collecte de fonds en vue d’aider le Musée à acquérir
trois photographies captivantes de Paul Strand, un des photo-
graphes les plus influents du vingtième siècle, des centaines de
Membres et d’Amis donateurs ont répondu à l’appel en faisant
des dons de 20 $ à 900 $.
Deux des œuvres acquises, soit Plage de Percé, Gaspé et Grange,
Gaspé, furent présentées dans le cadre d’une exposition de 2007
intitulée Photographies modernistes du Musée des beaux-arts du
Canada. Depuis, elles font le tour du Canada pour être admirées
dans plusieurs musées et galeries grâce au programme d’expo-
sitions itinérantes du Musée.
Il ne s’agit là que d’un seul exemple de la
grande portée des dons de nos membres, de
nos donateurs et de nos Amis donateurs. Au
fil des ans, ces dons ont permis au Musée de
mettre en œuvre une grande variété de pro-
jets tout aussi captivants les uns que les
autres. Ceux-ci vont de l’acquisition de
dix-sept dessins et estampes de grande im-
portance de la collection du 9e comte de
Dalhousie à la restauration de Christ mort
soutenu par les anges, saisissant fragment du
Musée du magnifique retable Petrobelli créé
par Paolo Véronèse qui, cet été, sera réuni à
Ottawa avec les trois autres fragments exis-
tants du retable. En outre, leurs dons ont
non seulement rendu possible l’achèvement
de la rédaction du Dictionary of Canadian
Artists de Colin McDonald, mais, année
après année, ils permettent au Musée d’offrir des camps de jour
et des camps de relâche de mars afin d’aider les enfants de divers
milieux à découvrir le merveilleux monde de l’art.
Sans leur générosité, de tels projets d’acquisition, de restau-
ration, d‘information et de découverte pourraient fort bien ne
jamais voir le jour.
Nos membres sont souvent surpris d’apprendre que leurs
frais d’adhésion ne peuvent être consacrés à de tels projets, car
ils servent d’abord et avant tout à couvrir les coûts des services
qui leur sont offerts, tels l’abonnement gratuit à Vernissage et les
soirées exclusives réservées aux membres.
C’est pourquoi la Fondation sollicite constamment des dons
et s’efforce d’assurer l’accessibilité et la flexibilité du processus
de don. Par exemple, les Amis donateurs combinent en un seul
paiement leur don de 300 $ à 999 $ et leurs frais d’adhésion.
Vous pouvez cependant faire deux paiements distincts, soit
un pour votre don et un pour vos frais d’adhésion. Par ailleurs,
bon nombre de membres décident de répartir leur don sur toute
l’année en divisant le montant total de leur don en douze verse-
ments mensuels pratiques. Cette façon de procéder est aussi
avantageuse pour la Fondation, qui profite
ainsi d’une rentrée de fonds ininterrompue
chaque mois. Bien que, à eux seuls, ces
dons mensuels peuvent sembler relative-
ment modestes, ils prennent une toute autre
allure lorsqu’on tient compte du nombre
total de donateurs qui procèdent de la sorte.
Ainsi, un don mensuel de 10 $ devient un
don total de 120 $ à la fin de l’année.
Multiplions ce montant par, disons, mille
donateurs et nous obtenons l’impres -
sionnante somme de 120 000 $ pour les
programmes du Musée! L’importance, la
valeur et l’incidence d’un tel appui sont
évidentes.

Canadian chefs, Kurt will be remembered

Culinary Scholarship he established at
Algonquin College and La Cité Collégiale

Waldele. Kurt a été le chef exécutif des cuisines
du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et du Centre

But you can also separate your donation from your membership pay-
ment. Countless members choose to donate throughout the year, with
many opting for easy monthly giving, which spreads their donations over
twelve smaller, more manageable payments. This is beneficial to the
Foundation too, as it provides a constant stream of funds each month.
Though perhaps relatively modest when taken in isolation, these individ-
ual donations gather momentum and strength from the sheer numbers of
those who give. When one’s monthly gift of $10 is considered over the year,
it becomes a gift of $120. When it is then combined with gifts of similar
amounts by a thousand donors, for example, this quickly becomes an im-
pressive pool of $120,000 to channel back into Gallery programs. The sheer
importance, value and impact of this support quickly becomes clear.
To make a donation or to convert your current donation to a monthly
gift, please call (613) 990-1298 or visit Shop NGC/donations. If you wish,
we’ll be happy to help you direct your gift so that it supports the program
area of the Gallery closest to your heart, through our acquisition, restora-
tion or education and outreach special projects funds. Your role in the
Gallery’s continued success cannot be underestimated. With your help, the
Foundation’s fundraising campaigns will continue to succeed in making
important projects of the National Gallery possible.
Through their donations, Members, Supporting Friends and Donors have made possible the restoration of Dead Christ Supported by Angels, theNational Gallery’s fragment of Paolo Veronese’s Petrobelli Altarpiece, reunited here with the other three existing fragments, and the presentation of the
Altarpiece at the Gallery.
