Don’t DIS my ABILITY Campaign 21 November to 11 December Approximately one in every five people in NSW has a disability. Nearly 20% of all people with disability within NSW are able to work, but are unemployed. Don’t DIS my ABILITY will celebrate people with disability who have overcome barriers to reach meaningful employment. The awareness campaign will seek to inspire and build confidence in people with disability to take action and find employment. By highlighting the successful career journeys of people with disability in film, the campaign will also speak to employers and employees, school children and the wider community to change attitudes and perceptions about employing people with disability. The campaign is timed to run in conjunction with The International Day of People with Disability celebrated annually on 3 December. ‘I Can, I Am’ Don’t DIS my ABILITY Films This year’s campaign will tell compelling human stories in film that will be sharable via social media to encourage positive interaction between people with disability and their communities. The films will illustrate that people with disability have the right skills and abilities to be the ‘best person for the job’. 1. Heidi Haydn - works for spinal cord Injuries Australia. In her job, Heidi assists those who have just sustained a new injury to promote independence. Heidi has paraplegia. 2. Nathan Basha - works for Nova Radio Station as an Office Assistant. He lives independently with flatmates and loves going to the movies with his friends. Nathan has Down Syndrome. 3. Iz Connell - currently studying to be a social worker.
