Series – ‘Developing a faith that works’

Today

‘Don’t just listen – do it!’

James 1:19-27

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because

human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires

James 1:19-20

Page 4: Don't Just Listen - Do It

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

Be quick to listen and slow to speak

Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning

if they hold their tongues

Prov 17:28

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

Be slow to become angry

A patient person has great understanding, but a quick-tempered person displays folly

Prov 14:29

The fruit of the Spirit is … patience

Gal 5:22

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

How do we handle our feelings of anger?

Admit you’re angry

Understand your anger

Deal with your anger

Share your feelings with God

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

How do we handle our feelings of anger?

… human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore,

get rid of all moral filth … and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you

James 1:20-21

‘Adopt the quick, slow, slow approach’

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from

all unrighteousness

1 John 1:8-9

‘Don’t just listen to the Word - do it’

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.

Do what it says.

James 1:22

‘Don’t just listen to the Word - do it’

Examine yourself

Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after

looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what s/he looks like

James 1:23-24

‘Don’t just listen to the Word - do it’

Examine yourself

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it – not forgetting what

they have heard but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do

James 1:25

‘Don’t just listen to the Word - do it’

Examine yourself

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their

religion is worthless

James 1:26

Engage in Service

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after

orphans and widows in their distress …
