(a) XX.2.2 Means of Egress Components (i) XX.2.2.2 Doors

(b) XX.3.6 Corridors (i) XX.3.6.2 Doors

iv. ADA Standards (1) 404 Doors, Doorways, and Gates

3. Types of Doors : PP-28 through PP-40 a. Q1 : Is the door in the Means of Egress?

i. A1 : No = No egress requirements (1) Means of Egress = Exit Access + Exit + Exit Discharge

b. Q2 : Is the “door” pivoted or side-swinging? i. A2 : Yes = Must meet IBC 1008 & 1020.2 ii. A2 : No = Go to Q3

c. Q3 : Is it (1) of the (9) exceptions to 1008.1.2? i. Of the (9) exceptions, (6) may be applicable to what Flad does :

(1) Private garages, office areas, factory and storage areas with an occupant load of 10 or less.

(2) Critical or intensive care patient rooms within suites of health care facilities. (3) In other than Group H occupancies, revolving doors complying with Section

1008.1.4.1. (4) In other than Group H occupancies, horizontal sliding doors complying with

Section 1008.1.4.3 are permitted in a means of egress. (5) Power-operated doors in accordance with Section 1008.1.4.2. (6) In other than Group H occupancies, manually operated horizontal sliding doors

are permitted in a means of egress from spaces with an occupant load of 10 or less.

d. 1008.1.2 Door swing i. When determining door swing (OL>50), one cannot “assign” specific OLs to

individual doors. No “traffic cops” to direct egressing occupants B 49 + 50 occupants.

4. Size of Doors : PP-41 through PP-50 a. Minimum (Door)

i. Clear Width = 32” (1) Bed Movement = 41.5” (2) Openings more than 24” deep = 36”

ii. Clear Height = 80” b. Maximum (Door)

i. Door Leaf (Swinging) = 48” ii. Clear Hgt = No max

c. Width i. Clear Width : face of the door to the (hinge) stop, with the door open 90 degrees. ii. Occupant Load (OL) determination

(1) Rule of Thumb = limit door sizes between 36” – 48”

Page 3: Doors : Part I

Flad Architects Page 3 of 3 Flad Code Forum Notes : 16 June 2016

(2) Door multiplier (a) 0.2 inch per occupant (b) 0.15 inch per occupant (auto sprinkler system + emergency voice/alarm

communication system (c) Example : 36” door leaf

(i) 36” - Stop - Door Thickness – Tolerance (ii) 36” – 0.625” – 1.75” – 0.125” = 34.125” (iii) 34.125” x 0.15” per occupant = 227 occupants

d. Maximum Total Occupant Load (for building) i. Example 1 : (2) doors with 307+307 occupants

(1) Limited to 500 occupants because of the number (2) exits. ii. Example 2 : (2) doors with 227+307 occupants

(1) Limited to 454 (227+227) occupants because the occupant load (OL) is limited by the lesser (227 vs 307) capacity of the (2) exits.

5. Elevation & Arrangement : PP-51 through PP-59 a. Floor elevation on each side of a door must be within 1/2” b. Thresholds 1/4 to 1/2” max c. Door Arrangement : provide 48” between doors in a series

6. Maneuvering : PP-60 through PP-71 a. Clearances for accessibility = 60” circle or 60” T-shaped b. Door swings cannot swing into required Clear Floor Space for any fixture. c. Clearances at Doors

i. Approach Direction : From front/From hinge side/From latch side ii. Door Side : Push or Pull iii. Perpendicular vs Parallel iv. Distances based on :

(1) Reach ranges = 24” side, 12” forward (2) Clear floor space = 30”x48” (3) Turning Radius = 60”

K.1 Where fire doors are used in a means of egress, NFPA 101, Life Safety

Code, specifies that they are required to swing with the exit travel, except for

doors on individual small rooms, which can be permitted to swing in; and that

for horizontal exits, where fire doors are required on both sides of the wall,

one door can be permitted to be an automatic horizontally sliding door,

normally open, and the other door can be permitted to be a self-closing door

that swings with the exit travel, normally closed.

The following types of doors might not be permitted to be used on exits:

(1) Rolling steel doors or shutters

(2) Vertical sliding doors

(3) Jackknife doors
