Areception will follow in the Quick Center for the Arts Atrium.

The Academic Convocation will begin at 4 p.m. in theRigas Family Theater. Fr. Michael Blastic, O.F.M., Conv., willoffer an appreciation of Fr. Ignatius, who was one of thefinest scholars of medieval Franciscan thought in the 20thcentury. Dr. Jacques Dalarun, a distinguished medievalist andthe Fr. Joseph A. Doino Visiting Professor of FranciscanStudies at the Franciscan Institute, will give the plenary lec-ture titled, “Clare and Francis of Assisi: Differing Approacheson Gender and Power.” Fr. Ignatius was one of the first schol-ars to make the writings of Clare available in English transla-tion.

Fr. Ignatius, one of the world’s leading authorities on thethought and spirituality of the great medieval Franciscan writ-ers including St. Bonaventure, earned a master of arts, licenti-ate in medieval studies and a doctorate in philosophy fromthe Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies in Toronto. Hetaught at the Franciscan Institute in the late 1940s and 1950s

and contributed to the revival of the graduate teaching program in the early 1970s.

Fr. Ignatius was one of the early members of the facultyin the Franciscan Institute who taught friars seeking to under-stand their own intellectual tradition,” said Fr. MichaelBlastic.

Fr. Ignatius taught at various institutions in the UnitedStates, including the Catholic University of America, then wasassigned by the Minister General to the Collegio SanBonaventura, Quaracchi (outside Florence, Italy) and appoint-ed prefect of its theological section. He continued in teaching, research and ministry for more than 40 years, serving as atheological consultant for the Union of Major Superiors.

“The life work of Ignatius Brady is identified with theEnglish Speaking Conference of Friars Minor through itsCommission on the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition,” said Fr.

Blastic. In 1962, the Order of Friars Minor conferred on Fr.

Ignatius the title of Lector Jubilatus, the highest recognitionafforded his teachers, and in 1974, he received an honorarydoctorate from St. Bonaventure.

“The more than 40 years of uninterrupted professionaland recognized activity in teaching, formation, research andpastoral care … tell eloquently the stature and intensity ofhis productive period of work, and merit our gratitude andspecial recognition,” said Fr. John Vaughn, MinisterGeneral, when Fr. Ignatius returned to the United States forhealth reasons in 1983. He died on Aug. 4, 1990.
