THE FLORIDA SERIESthe 2o09 VanderbIlt-florIda Game

Vanderbilt (3) at #1 Florida (27)Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville, Fla. (90,684) • Nov. 7 • ESPN2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Quarterback Tim Tebow accounted for two touchdowns, Caleb Sturgis kicked two field goals and the Gators beat the Commodores 27-3. It marks Vanderbit's seventh straight loss. The Commodore defense played well against Heisman candidate Tebow, who directed the Gators to 375 total yards, with many coming in the game. Tebow played virtually the entire way for the Gators. The Commodores' season-long pattern of little offensive production continued against Florida, with Vanderbilt totalling just 199 yards. Vanderbilt quarterback Mackenzi Adams was 13 of 29 for 100 yards, with an interception. Adams threw quick passes to avoid the Florida pass rush. The lone Commodore points came on a 32-yard field goal by freshman Ryan Fowler midway through the third quarter. Vanderbilt struggled to defend Tebow's top target, tight end Aaron Hernandez, who caught seven passes for 120 yards.

★ Florida has captured the last 19 games played between the schools, dating back to a 24-9 Vanderbilt victory in 1988. The Commodores are 7-14-1 all-time in games played on the Nashville campus, with their last victory coming in 1988. ★ Vanderbilt controlled the series in its infancy, winning five of the first seven games played between the schools from 1945-1955. ★ From 1974-1988, Vanderbilt captured three of six games played in the series. All three victories came in Nashville.

★ 2005 Most competitive game between teams in last decade saw Vanderbilt rally behind arm of QB Jay Cutler, who passed for 361 yards and four TDs in Gainesville. TV audience saw controversial celebration penalty after Cutler-to-Earl Bennett TD pass, negating two-point conversion chance for Commodores to win in regulation. ★ 2002 Trailing 21-10 at halftime on cold, windy day, Jay Cutler leads rally against Rex Grossman-guided Gators. The 'Dores drop 21-17 home decision by failing to score on final four possessions. ★ 1988 The Commodore defense, paced by LB Bill Cunningham, comes up big before sellout crowd, intercepting two Florida passes, forcing a fumble and limiting the Gators to 275 total yards in 24-9 Vanderbilt victory. ★ 1982 QB Whit Taylor completes 30 passes for 287 yards and three TDs, but OT Rob Monaco saves the day in 31-29 win over No. 14 Florida by recovering Vanderbilt fumble in endzone for score. ★ 1974 Reserve QB David Lee leads 'Dores to 24-10 victory over No. 8 Florida, hitting TE Barry Burton on five passes, including one for a TD. Vanderbilt defense also comes up big in early-season win. ★ 1955 Vanderbilt completes just three passes but rushes for 264 yards and three TDs to push regular season winning streak to six. QB Don Orr and RB Charley Horton guide the way in Commodores' 21-8 win. The team returns to Florida to play Auburn in the Gator Bowl. ★ 1949 The only game ever played between the teams in Jacksonville started with a bang as Vanderbilt's Lee "Long Gone" Nalley returned the opening kick 97 yards for a TD. The lead change five times, with All-SEC back Herb Rich scoring the winning TD. The 'Dores capital-ized on four Florida lost fumbles to notch a 22-17 victory.

VANDERBILT NOTES

ELEVEN COMMODORES FROM FLORIDA The Vanderbilt roster includes 11 rosters with ties to the Sunshine state. The list of Commodores from Florida include LB Archibald Barnes (R-So, Tampa), OL Mylon Brown (R-Fr., Trilby), DB Steven Clarke (Fr., Fort Lauderdale) WR Akeem Dunham (R-So., Eustis), TE Mason Johnston (R-Fr., Jacksonville); safety Micah Powell (R-So.,Tarpon Springs), DE Thomas Ryan (Fr., Marathon), DB/KR Eric Samuels (So., Eustis), DE Johnell Thomas (R-So.,Orlando) and TE/HB Ryan van Rensburg (R-Jr., Jacksonville). Another Floridian, OL Justin Cabbagestalk (R-Fr., Tampa), has missed the entire '10 season with a chronic knee injury.

PREP TEAMMATES TO FACE OFF

When current Gator DE Justin Trattou graduated from Don Bosco Prep in upstate New Jersey, his starting position on one of the nation's top teams was taken by current Commodore James Kittredge (Fr., OL). Both Trattou and Kittredge played on Don Bosco's 2006 undefeated squad that earned the school's first state championship. Kittredge was a four-year varsity letterwinner for Don Bosco. Three other Commodores, Steven Clarke (Fr., DB) , Justin Cabbagestalk (R-Fr., OL) and Johnell Thomas (R-So., DE) , also have former teammates on the Florida squad. Clarke and Florida's Moses Jenkins (Sr., DB) were stars at Boyd Anderson H.S. in Fort Lauderdale. Cabbagestalk and Florida's Matt Patchan (Jr., OL) played at Armwood H.S. in Tampa. Thomas and Florida's Jeremy Brown (Jr, CB) were classmates at powerful Boone (Fla.) H.S., in Orlando.

THIRTEEN TRUE FRESHMEN SEE ACTION

Just six teams across the nation have played more true freshmen than Vanderbilt this year where 13 first-year contributors have enjoyed action. Florida and Air Force lead the nation with 17 true freshmen contributors. Besides Stewart and Morse, other contributing first-year players are Karl Butler (safety), Steven Clarke (DB), Chase Garnham (LB), Andre Hal (DB), James Kittredge, (OC), Jonathan Krause (WR), Kenny Ladler (safety), Fitz Lassing (TE), Jordan Matthews (WR), Jared Morse (DT), Andre Simmons (safety), Logan Stewart (OC) and Carey Spear PK).

30 'DORES SEE FIRST COLLEGE ACTION Thirty Commodores have played their first snaps this season. Vanderbilt's first-time contributors are Mylon Brown (R-Fr., OG), Jabo Burrow (R-So., OG), Karl Butler (safety), Charlie Byrge (R-So., WR), Steven Clarke (Fr., DB), Eric Frieman (Fr., PK, Jay Fullam (R-Fr., safety), Chase Garnham (Fr., LB), Andre Hal (Fr., DB), Bobby Jewell (R-So., LB), Wesley Johnson (R-Fr., OT), Mason Johnston (R-Fr., TE), Richard Kent (R-So., P), James Kittredge (Fr., center), Jonathan Krause (Fr., WR), Kenny Ladler (Fr., safety), Fitz Lassing (Fr., TE), Taylor Loftley (R-So., DT), Reece Lovell (R-Fr., RB), Javon Marshall (R-Fr., DB), Jordan Matthews (Fr., WR), Walker May (R-Fr., DE), Thad McHaney (R-Fr., DE), Jared Morse (Fr., DT), Marc Panu (R-Fr., DT), Andre Simmons (Fr., safety), Carey Spear (Fr., PK), Logan Stewart (Fr., OL), Wesley Tate (R-Fr., RB) and Duane Vaughn (R-Jr., DB).

EIGHTEEN NEW STARTERS THIS YEAR Eighteen Commodores – ten on defense, seven on offense and one specialist – have enjoyed their first career starts this season. Tray Herndon (R-Jr., WR) earned his first career start at Arkansas. Two weeks ago, Logan Stewart (Fr., OC) and Mason Johnston (R-Fr., TE) earned their first career starts against South Carolina. Besides Herndon, Stewart and Johnston, the following offensive players have made their first career starts this year: Jabo Burrow (R-So., OG), Wesley Johnson (R-Fr., LT), Jonathan Krause (Fr., WR), Kennard Reeves (R-Sr., RB), Caleb Welchans (R-So., OG-OT) and Turner Wimberly (R-Sr., WR). Defensive players earning initial starts this year are Archibald Barnes (R-So., LB), Nate Campbell (R-Sr., LB), Eddie Foster (So., CB), Jay Fullam (R-Fr., safety), Kenny Ladler (Fr., safety), Rob Lohr (R-So., DT), Colt Nichter (R-So., DT) and Trey Wilson (So., CB). Punter Richard Kent (R-So.) also is a first-year starter.

NORMAN OUT WITH INJURY The Commodores will likely be without their most versatile and productive offensive player, Warren Norman (So., TB/KR), for the rest of the season. Head Coach Robbie Caldwell said Norman, from Stone Mountain, Ga., suffered a right wrist dislocation in the second half of the Arkansas game. Team physicans are expected to correct the injury in surgery Tuesday. "I feel really bad for Warren and I know he is just as disappointed," Caldwell said. "Warren was having another outstanding season for our football team and was one of our most productive players." Norman becomes the second key Commodore contributor in consecutive weeks to suffer an injury that forces an unlikely return. Last week, Jamie Graham (R-Jr., DB) was lost for 4-6 weeks after having to undergo knee surgery. Through eight games, Norman was the team's rushing leader in yards (459), attempts (77) and touchdowns (4). He also was one of the most dynamic kickoff returners in the nation, averaging 25.4 yards on 22 returns. Norman also ranked fourth on the team with 11 receptions out of the backfield. Two tailbacks, Wesley Tate (R-Fr.) and Kennard Reeves (R-Sr.), are expected to get additional snaps behind starter Zac Stacy (So).

NO SENIORS AMONG VU STAT LEADERS How young are the Commodores? The squad does not have a single statistical category topped by a senior. In stat categories, the leading senior rusher (Kennard Reeves) ranks fourth, the leading senior receiver (Turner Wimberly) ranks seventh and the leading senior tackler (John Stokes) ranks third.

COMMODORE NOTES

★ In losing to Arkansas, Vanderbilt missed an opportunity to become the only team from the SEC Eastern Division to notch two victories over SEC Western Division rivals. The Commodores' early-season victory over Ole Miss is one of two wins by an SEC East team over SEC West squads. ★ Though the move last week to insert Des Kitchings into the offensive coordinator's role paid early dividends, the Vanderbilt offense continued to struggle with its production. For the first time in nearly two years, the Commodores scored touchdowns on its first two possessions against an SEC opponent (last time was at Kentucky, Nov. 15, 2008). After amassing 140 total yards on the opening two drives, the Vanderbilt offense managed just 153 total yards for the game. ★ Walker May (R-Fr., DE) put together the finest game of his career. He contributed a career-high six tackles, including a pair that resulted in losses of eight yards. ★ The Commodore defense permitted 84 offensive plays by Arkansas, the same amount as Vanderbilt's last opponent, South Carolina. ★ Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB) achieved his finest game in more than a month, contributing a team-high 10 total tackles. It was Marve's fourth game with double-digit tackles – and first since he was injured at Connecticut. ★ Five of Vanderbilt's top six tacklers were from the secondary: safety Sean Richardson (9), cornerback Casey Hayward (9), safety Kenny Ladler (8), cornerback Eric Samuels (6) and cornerback Eddie Foster (6). ★ Vanderbilt did not force an Arkansas turnover. It was the second time this season that the Commodores could not force a turnover in SEC play (the first was during a shutout loss at Georgia). ★ For the second straight game, Warren Norman (So., TB) started with a big rush, going 51 yards on Vanderbilt's second offense play. Last week, Norman had a 40-yard scamper on the first play vs. South Carolina. ★ Richard Kent (R-Fr., punter) continued his stellar campaign. A first-year starter, Kent averaged 47.9 yards on seven punts. Kent's net average was just as sharp (46.7 yards) after allowing just one return. Three of Kent's punts were downed inside the Arkansas 20-yard line. Kent and the Commodores rank third in the SEC with a net punting average of 39.8 yards. ★ Sophomore Eric Samuels earned the team's specialist of the week recognition by returning five kicks for 127 yards (25.4-yard average). ★ The Commodore offense produced just eight first downs against the Arkansas defense, primarily because they converted just one of 11 third-down attempts. Vanderbilt has yet to have an edge in time of possession this season. The Commodores are on a streak of 16 straight games where opponents have owned an advantage in time of possession. ★ Arkansas' 26 points in the second quarter were the most against Vanderbilt since surrendering 31 to Georgia Tech on Aug. 31, 2002.

NOTES FROM ARKANSAS GAME

PHIL STEELE: FOUR 'DORES NAMED Four Commodores were in Phil Steele's Midseason All-SEC team released Oct. 19. The football magazine named Casey Hayward (Jr., CB) to its second team All-SEC defense. Included on its third team All-SEC squad were Brandon Barden (R-Jr., TE), Warren Norman (So., KR) and Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB).

Though just a sophomore, Warren Norman ranks sixth all-time on the Vanderbitl all-time kickoff return charts.

Norman, who had 62 yards on two returns at Arkansas last Saturday, has moved up five positions on the all-time list this year. He is averaging 25.4 yards per return this year, ranking sixth in the SEC and 44th in the NCAA.

Norman is averaging 25.9 yards per kickoff for his career. In 2009, he set a modern-day Vanderbilt team record in 2009 with a 26.2-yard average.

NORMAN NOW 6TH ON RETURN LIST

DUO AMONG NCAA STATISTIC LEADERS Vanderbilt standouts, Casey Hayward (Jr., CB) and Tim Fugger (R-Jr., DE), remain among the national leaders in key defensive stats. Hayward, from Perry, Ga., shares the NCAA lead with five interceptions. Fugger, of Oak Brook, Ill., ranks third nationally with four forced fumbles. Hayward, believed to be the first Commodore of the modern era to achieve interceptions in four consecutive games, also tops the squad with seven career picks. Hayward's current interception total has been bet-tered by only two Commodores in the last 30 years: D.J. Moore (2007, 2008), and Leonard Coleman (1982). The team's single-season record of eight INTs is held by Coleman (1982) and Thomas Wingfield (1973). Fugger's forced fumble total is just as rare. Only two Commodore defenders since 1983 have posted more forced fumbles in a season than Fugger: Jamie Duncan (5, 1996) and Shelton Quarles (5, 1991).

VANDERBILT IN 2010: LOTS OF YOUTH Looking for a quick description for Robbie Caldwell's first Vanderbilt squad? Youthful would work. The list of 'Dores seeing action features 21 sophomores, 11 redshirt freshmen and 13 true freshmen. Only eight Commodore seniors have contributed this season.

CALDWELL AS FIRST-YEAR COACH How does Robbie Caldwell match up with other first-year Vanderbilt head coaches? In just six games, Caldwell has matched the win total of four of the last six Commodore coaches. Since Fred Pancoast's first team won seven games in 1975, the highest first-year win total was accomplished by Gerry DiNardo in 1991 (5).

HAND NEWEST COMMODORE COACH Herb Hand, a veteran offensive coach with excellent credentials, is the newest Vanderbilt coach. Hired in early August, Hand serves as offensive line coach and was the first staff hire by Robbie Caldwell. Hand came to Vanderbilt after three years at the University of Tulsa, a tenure that featured some of the NCAA's most productive offenses. As Tulsa's offensive coordinator, Hand directed 2007 and 2008 offenses that topped the nation. Tulsa's 2008 unit averaged 570 yards and 47 points. Hand also spent six successful years with the University of West Virginia's productive spread offense before going to Tulsa.

FOURTH CO-CAPTAIN MISSES ACTION The Commodores are still yet to play a game this season when all four co-captains see action. Joey Bailey (R-Sr., center) missed the South Carolina and Arkansas games with an ankle injury and is listed as questionable for Florida. The team's three defensive co-captains – DT T.J. Greenstone, LB Chris Marve and DT Adam Smotherman – contributed against the Razorbacks, just the second time this year all three played in the same game.

KITCHINGS NEW OFF. COORDINATOR Running backs mentor Des Kitchings replaced Jimmy Kiser as the Commodores' offensive coordinator last week. Head Coach Robbie Caldwell announced The decision Oct. 25, elevating Kitchings, currently in his third year on the Vanderbilt staff, to offensive coordinator for the first time in his coaching career. Kiser will continue to coach the team's quarterbacks. Earlier this year, the following coaching changes were made: ★ Bruce Fowler moved to assistant head coach/linebackers coach under Caldwell as assistant head coach. ★ Jamie Bryant became the sole defensive coordinator while continuing as the team's secondary coach. ★ Rick Logo added recruiting coordinator duties to his primary role as defensive tackles coach. ★ Mike Pelton hired as defensive ends coach. ★ Ted Cain moved to TE coach and special teams coordinator.

Just one year removed from making the most field goals in more than a quarter century, the Commodores are on pace to attempt the fewest field goals in 40 years. Vanderbilt is also on the verge of setting another team mark it would not like to challenge – most punts in a single season. Remarkably, the Commodores have just four field goal attempts this season. Sophomore placekicker Ryan Fowler, who tied a school record with 16 field goals last year, has made three of the four tries. The Commodores also have attempted just one field goal in five SEC games (a conversion vs. LSU) – and just one field goal in the last six weeks. Only six teams in the NCAA – Oregon State, Marshall, New Mexico, Eastern Michigan, La.-Lafayette and Washington State – have fewer made field goals than the Commodores. The Commodores have 60 punts through eight games. Punter Richard Kent is on pace to break the team record for most punts in the season, set last year by Brett Upson. Kent is averaging 7.5 punts a game – and will break the team mark if he averages more than five punts during the final four games. Both Fowler and Kent have been productive. In 2009, Fowler was named SEC All-Freshman. Kent is a solid SEC All-Freshman candidate this year and has been one of the NCAA's top net punters.

ODD SPECIAL TEAM STATS

STATISTICAL MILESTONES ★ Larry Smith (R-Jr., QB) has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for passing yards. His 1,030-yard total ranks ninth all-time among Vanderbilt junior QBs. Smith needs 325 passing yards to overtake Mike Wright (1,383 yards, 1977) into eighth place. ★ Casey Hayward (Jr., CB) set a single-season high in unassisted tackles during the Arkansas game. He has 41 solo stops, one more than his previous high set last year. Hayward's totals in interceptions (5) and defensed passes (12) also represent single-season highs. ★ Sean Richardson (Jr., safety) continues to build on his single-high total of solo tackles. He has 47 stops on the year, four more than a year ago. Richardson's team-high 6.5 tackles for loss also is a career high. ★ John Stokes (Sr.) played in his 45th career game, most on the squad. He is also enjoying a career year with 55 total tackles. ★ Kenny Ladler has the most tackles (38) by a Vanderbilt freshman safety since Reshard Langford posted 55 tackles as a first-year player in 2005. ★ Sophomore Zac Stacy needs 201 rushing yards to reach 1,000 yards for his career. With Warren Norman likely out for the rest of the season with an injury, Stacy should get plenty of opportunity. ★ Junior tight end Brandon Barden has a reception in his last 14 games. ★ True freshman receiver Jonathan Krause have scored twice on four career rushes. ★ Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB) has reached 10 or more total tackles in 15 games in a 31-game career.

MARVE WEARS DOSTER "KD1" PATCH Chris Marve (R-Jr., LB) became the fourth Vanderbilt player to wear the "KD1" jersey patch when the Commodores opened against Northwestern. The recognition is one of the most significant awarded by fellow Commodore players. The patch honors the memory of Kwane Doster, the only Commodore ever to receive the SEC Freshman of the Year Award. Doster was shot and killed in his hometown of Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 26, 2004. It will be displayed on the front of Stewart's No. 90 jersey. CALDWELL: FIRST-YEAR HEAD COACH

Robbie Caldwell, the 26th head coach in Vanderbilt football history, is one of just 11 first-time head coaches in the NCAA FBS subdivision this season. Caldwell, a veteran of more than three decades of collegiate coaching, was named to replace retiring Bobby Johnson on July 14. Caldwell and Kentucky mentor Joker Phillips are the SEC's only first-time head coaches this year. Besides Caldwell and Phillips, other first-time FCS head coaches are Sonny Dykes (La. Tech), Dan Enos (Central Michigan), Jimbo Fisher (Florida State), John "Doc" Holliday (Marshall), Mike MacIntyre (San Jose State), Larry Porter (Memphis), Jeff Quinn (Buffalo), Charlie Strong (Louisville) and Willie Taggart (Western Kentucky). Caldwell has the most collegiate coaching experience of the 11 coaches, with Holliday having the second longest tenure.

GRAHAM OUT INDEFINITELY Jamie Graham (R-Jr., DB) is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery earlier last week to repair a knee injured against So. Carolina. Graham, a two-game starter this year, has served as the Commodores' top nickel back. Graham also missed the first three games this season after suffering a preseason groin injury.

Vanderbilt's Record When... Senior linebacker John Stokes was a semifinalists for the prestigious National Scholar Athlete Award sponsored by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. The organizations named Scholar Athlete Award recipients last week. Stokes has also been named as one of 10 finalists for the ARA (Awards and Recognition Association) Sportsmanship Award, the winner of which will be announced in November. The native of Memphis, Tenn., also is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, formerly known as the Draddy Trophy. Stokes is the team's third leading tackler (6.8 tackles per game) and tops the squad with a pair of fumble recoveries in his final year as a starter. Stokes maintains a 3.8 GPA, majoring in Medicine, Health & Society. He is a two-time District IV Academic All-American. The son of Vanderbilt graduates also received early admission into Vanderbilt's Medical School after his sophomore academic year on campus, and is expected to start postgraduate classes next fall. Stokes also is involved as an executive board member of one of Vanderbilt's largest student organizations, Manna Project International. He serves as site development coordinator, in charge of planning and creating community service trips abroad during Spring Break 2011. There have been four previous Vanderbilt recipients of the award: Hunter Hillenmeyer, 2002; Andy McCarroll, 1989; Doug Martin, 1974; and Wade Butcher, 1961.

The Vanderbilt offense continues to struggle producing first downs and having success in third-down situations. Through eight games, the Commodores rank 12th in the SEC in both first downs (12.9 pg) per game) or third down efficiency (22% success rate). The lack of success in key situ-ations has Vanderbilt trailing in other key offensive statistical categories, including scoring and and total offense. On Saturday, the offense converted on just one of 11 third downs, failing on its last 10 straight attempts.

For the first time since 2001, Vanderbilt jerseys sport player names. The uniform change was introduced in the season opener versus Northwestern. Jerseys during the Bobby Johnson tenure did not identify players.

Besides television production obligations, Commodore coaches and players are not made available on Fridays. Media photographers are permitted to shoot the first 30 minutes of practice.

Media Information The Commodores are without one student- athlete who was expected to be a key member of the 2010 signing class, Rajaan Bennett. Bennett, a highly sought-after running back from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., died tragically on Feb. 18, 2010. Bennett was the victim of a residential shooting that shocked the McEachern and Vanderbilt communities. On Sept. 3, the school honored Bennett by retiring his No. 5 jersey and erecting a monument at its football stadium. At a memorial service days after the death, his literature teacher read an essay entitled “Strength” written by Bennett within a week of his death. The essay closed with the following lines:

“There will never be a time that I will give up. I work hard at whatever I do for that man upstairs to smile down on me with the rays of the sun. “My drive cannot be stopped or even slowed down, because every obstacle has a way around it. “Every day I become stronger from the weights physically, the books mentally and life emotionally. There is no limit to my strength and at the end of the day, I want to be known as the strongest.”

Bennett rushed for 1,857 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior captain, helping McEachern to an undefeated regular season. A Rivals' 4-star recruit and one of Georgia’s most decorated seniors, Bennett earned the state’s AAAAA Offensive Player of the Year Award. At McEachern, Bennett was a campus leader and honors student. Bennett and his family were honored during ceremonies on Oct. 23 of the South Carolina game.

Austin Monahan (R-Jr., TE) will miss the 2010 season after suffering an ACL tear in an early August practice. It marks the third consecutive year that the unfortunate Monahan has sustained a season-ending injury. Last year, he tore an ACL at midseason. In 2008, Monahan suffered a shoulder fracture after making a catch at Ole Miss.

WINNING TREND: 100-YARD RUSHERS Success in the Vanderbilt running game leads to team success. Dating back to 2003, Vanderbilt has won every game in which its rushing attack featuresa 100-yard rusher. Warren Norman's 111 rushing yards was a key factor in the team's 28-14 victory at Ole Miss on Sept. 18. Since the 2003 opener, Vanderbilt is 14-0 when a running back reaches 100 rushing yards.
