Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite a season in
the history of Dorking FC, both and off the field.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of our neighbours, Redhill FC.
The friendly rivalry between our two clubs is part of both our local histories, from the derby fixture stretching all the way back to 1894, to the early days at our traditional home ground of Meadowbank when each ball booted out of the ground would be greeted by the home fans shout of “Redhill!” – and on to today, which is actually our first home league game against the Lobsters for more than forty years.
Our two clubs went their separate ways in terms of leagues after the demise of the Athenian League in the 1970s, so it’s good to have the chance to meet once again today. Let’s hope it’s a festive treat.
Today’s match isn’t just our last home fixture before Christmas – it’s also our final home game of the year.
And what a year it’s been.
We started 2016 with the future of the club in jeopardy. After two years of ground sharing at Horley, while awaiting the rebuilding of Meadowbank, the news that the redevelopment would be delayed by a year left the club on the brink. With no means of generating significant revenue while playing so far away, and having already stretched one year’s ground sharing budget across a second season, the future looked bleak.
A public fundraising campaign saw a large amount of local support and a clear desire to keep our great, 136 year old club going. Following conversations with Dorking Wanderers, we formed the Dorking Football Development Alliance which not only sees our two clubs working together to boost all grassroots football in the town, but set up an arrangement for us to share facilities here at Westhumble, and then on to the new Meadowbank.
DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN
a welcome from the chairman
ALAN GOUT
04
Meanwhile, on the pitch, we enjoyed a run to the Southern Combination Cup Final at the end of last season, including a memorable 3-0 semi-final win at Westhumble – our first game back in Dorking for nearly three seasons, in front of a bumper crowd.
We made a managerial change in the summer, welcoming the highly rated young coach Danny Fox, along with his assistants Chris Wye and Greg Fidele, as we looked to take advantage of our return to playing home games in the town by pushing on with our long term aim of offering real development to local and youthful players and moving towards creating a team that represents the local community.
That led to a complete rebuilding of the squad by Danny over the summer. As was to be expected in this transitional season when we’re placing an emphasis on the long term, there have been both good and bad results – but, most importantly, we’ve seen a number of local lads take their opportunities to break through from the youth squad and establish themselves as first team regulars, with enormous potential for our future. The connection the town feels to Dorking FC when it sees its own players on the pitch has been immediately obvious – with us now welcoming home crowds regularly among the very best in the division.
Meanwhile, we took over the running of Dorking’s Under 18s on behalf of the new Alliance, which has seen some of the town’s best emerging talent playing in the Ryman Youth League wearing our Cockerel Colours for the very first time. Thanks to the dedicated coaching of Steve Lunn, Nick Torpey and Simon Coffey, the lads have more than held their own against teams from some of Surrey’s elite academies.
And there’s been excellent growth in the Ladies team too. Under up-and-coming coach Matt Dilger, assisted by the highly experienced Ben Smythe, the Ladies have gone from perennial strugglers to a well-organised and competitive squad combining talented local teenagers with some more experienced players coming in from nearby clubs such as Crawley Wasps, Carshalton and Chelsea academy.
Finally, towards the end of this year, we’ve seen the sight we were all been waiting for – the rebuilding of our ancestral home ground at Meadowbank. At last, the new stadium has begun to rise in the town centre.
It means next year promises to be just as memorable as this one. We’ll be moving in to the ground for next season – which will be both an exciting prospect and a great deal of work, from setting up and running the clubhouse as a successful venture, to working with our colleagues from Dorking Wanderers and the local youth clubs to ensure the stadium is a vibrant, well-used new football facility that everyone in Dorking will flock to and be proud of.
We hope as many of you as possible will want to join us on this fantastic journey throughout next year.
But, in the meantime, enjoy the derby and your visit to Dorking FC today, have a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year, and I hope to welcome you back here to Westhumble – and then to Meadowbank – in 2017.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for this afternoon’s local derby against
Redhill. I’d like to welcome Gavin Gordon, Barry Wilde, their players and officials for the match today.
December started brightly for us at home with a 6-0 win against Epsom Athletic and it was pleasing to see not just the confidence of the side, but also Jimmy Brazil back on the scoresheet in such emphatic fashion following a blank in November.
I felt we deserved more from the Frimley Green game last week and, except for a debatable officiating decision, we may well have done so. But it’s results that count and we’ve put ourselves in a difficult position with that loss, needing to close a points gap before we can begin climbing the league table.
Nevertheless, there is plenty to be positive about - 2017 has a great deal to offer us both on and off the pitch, and hopefully we can finish this year strongly with today’s game and then the Bank Holiday game at Cove.
This week has been busy on the transfer front, with three players joining.

arrangement. Ross has been short on game time following a bad accident earlier in the year but, having worked with him previously at Molesey, I know what he is capable of and, if he can get back to his best form wearing our Cockerel Colours, I’m sure we’ll all be very happy.
Charlie McTigue and Cal Botterill have also joined the club after training with us recently. Cal played very well for us in pre-season before moving out of the area while Charlie may be familiar to a few of you, having played football locally - most recently for Dorking Wanderers’ reserve side - before playing in Australia last year.
I hope enjoy the game. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year, and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2017.
Up the Chicks.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE
DARRELLMOTHEE
Despite starting in August as a defender, when Darrell Mothee looks back over the season, it’s
likely to be attacking memories that shine brightly.
Beginning with his ambitious long-range strike that floated into the net from an acute angle to secure the first win of the new campaign, against Worcester Park, Darrell’s left foot deliveries, whether from open play or set pieces, often create an air of expectation amongst the watching supporters and have lead to several highlights.
More recently, Darrell’s found himself high in the opposition half far more regularly, as he’s taken up a left midfield role.
“I’m happy to play anywhere,” he says. “My personal aim for this season has always been to just keep working hard and stay in the squad.”
Another of the locally-based players recruited to Danny Fox’s squad revamp in the summer, Darrell had put his football on the back burner before coming along to watch one of the early pre-season games.
“After a bit of a break, I’d wanted to go back to playing regularly at a good level,” he says, “And I could see that
Dorking FC was changing to promote local players, so I spoke to the manager and joined in pre-season training to get fit again.”
The matches have followed swiftly in the first half of the season, with fifteen first team starts and three goals so far, but Darrell says he still looks forward to the training sessions too.
“I really enjoy the training here,” he admits. “I like the organisation behind it all, working on specific parts of our game - it’s very focused, with everyone working for each other.”
And that’s another thing Leeds United supporter (“Blame my Dad!”) Darrell is enthusiastic about - the team spirit in club this year. Even when things haven’t always gone as well as might have been hoped on the pitch.
He says, “There’s a great togetherness - and that’s what it’s all about for this season really.”
“It’s a building year, getting the foundations of the team in place so we can really look forward to next year when we move back home to Meadowbank.”

A Jimmy Brazil hat trick set Dorking up for a record-breaking victory over Epsom Athletic.
“It was the performance we knew we were capable of and it was good to see our confidence going forward,” said Chicks’ manager Danny Fox, adding “Epsom have been struggling of late and I’m sure we’ll face tougher tests going forward, but we intend to use this result as a springboard for the rest of the season.”
The boss had responded to recent disappointing form by making changes to the squad in the run up to the game. The arrival of two new signings, including the experienced Dennis Ongei, had been intended to help with the development of the local, youthful players who form the core of the Chicks and who the club is looking to build a team around for the long term.
Ongei duly took his place in the centre of midfield for his debut, but it was club stalwart Jimmy Brazil, now wearing the captain’s armband after five years in the cockerel colours, who took the headlines with a match winning performance.
After threatening to open the scoring through Brazil with a shot just wide, and James Herouvin who saw his one-on-one attempt superbly stopped by the Epsom keeper diving to his right, the breakthrough finally came on 25 minutes. A corner was swung in from the right and the Dorking skipper rose unmarked at the far post to power a header into the Epsom net.
The Chicks continued to enjoy the best of the chances but it took another quarter of an hour before they could extend their lead, following good work down the left hand side by Andy Miller. The Brockham-based midfielder swung the ball in looking for Brazil who, at first sight, appeared to be first to the cross, but it was an Epsom defender who got the touch diverting it into his own net for 2-0.
There could be no doubts about who scored the third
though. Jimmy Brazil with control, a dummy and then a volley, smashed the ball into the net on the stroke of half time. And, just three minutes into the second half, he made sure he would be taking home the match ball by completing his hat trick while putting Dorking 4-0 ahead.
It was one of Dorking’s home grown youth players, James Herouvin from last season’s U18s, who grabbed the fifth with a superb individual goal, breaking free from the halfway line and neatly beating the Epsom keeper.
Andy Miller wrapped up the scoring ten minutes from time, beating the offside trap to ensure December got off to the best possible start with Dorking recording their biggest ever win in their eleven seasons in the Combined Counties League.

Dorking slipped to narrow defeat at Frimley Green as the loss of key players to injury left the Chicks defending
for much of the second half.
The result was harsh on Danny Fox’s side who twice took the lead in a thrilling first 25 minutes and had further chances to get in front at the end of the first half, and before fate intervened.
Coming into the game off the back of a 6-0 victory, the Chicks started with understandable confidence and took just three minutes to get in front. From a corner, the Frimley Green keeper could only palm a shot onto the bar and, in a crowded penalty area, centre back Alex Watts rose highest to nod the rebound into the top of the net. Scoring his first senior goal for the Chicks, Watts is the latest in a line of local youth players to get the opportunity to make his mark on the first team this season by stepping up from Dorking’s U18s.
Despite Dorking’s bright start, the lead lasted just over seven minutes as a long ball found Frimley striker James Robertson who, having already looked a handful upfront, made no mistake with a crisp low finish into the far corner.
In a frantic opening quarter, the Chicks regained the lead on 17 minutes. From just inside his own half, Stuart Russell clipped a fine pass over the Frimley Green defence and Jimmy Brazil showed superb tenacity to win the ball and hold off a challenge from both defender and keeper, before rounding the latter and placing the ball into an empty net from a tight angle.
Andy Miller narrowly failed to increase the lead after unleashing a spectacular 30 yard shot that beat the keeper but flew just wide of the upright.
Still, if the Chicks were enjoying the best of the possession, Frimley Green continued to look threatening on the break. And so it proved on 23 minutes, when a fast flowing move from one end of the pitch to the other culminated in a low, driven cross from Robertson on the right, turned into the net from two yards by McDonald for a second equaliser.
Following a scrappy period, Dorking began to work further openings in the last few minutes of the half. But despite some excellent crosses swung into the box by Brazil and Russell, the Chicks couldn’t quite apply the finishing touch and had to settle for 2-2 at half time.
The second half swung the way of the hosts as Danny Fox was forced into changes. Recent signing Dennis Ongei had been anchoring centre midfielder with a calm authority that allowed others to push forward. Having been struggling through injury since early in the first half, he departed just five minutes into the second and his experience was notably missed by his younger up and coming team mates.
Matters got worse when centre forward and captain Jimmy Brazil was unable to run off a clattering challenge on his ankle and also left the field.
As a result, the Chicks found it much harder to retain possession or break up the wave after wave of Frimley Green attacks. Some dogged defending, along with superb stops by 17 year old keeper Tom Day - including one save with his feet when Frimley broke through three-on-one - kept the home team at bay.
Indeed, Dorking might even have taken the lead when, from a corner, Paul Gough met the ball at the near post, only for his header to hit the underside of the cross bar and bounce down just on the wrong side of the line. But the Chicks’ resistance finally gave way ten minutes from time when, from a debatable throw-in decision, Frimley Green broke downfield and Robertson scored the decisive third goal.
“To lose to a late winner was undeserved in my opinion,” said Danny Fox, who was clear about how the game ran away from the Chicks.
“The loss of Dennis Ongei made a huge difference, but we kept plugging away at 2-2 and, if Paul Gough’s header had been an inch lower, I think we would have won the game.”
Despite defeat, the performance will ensure the Chicks are looking forward to this afternoon’s historic local derby.

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first
Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.
