Issue 48 December 2017
Dear Team,
I am sure, like me, you are looking forward to the Christmas break!
As 2017 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on what has been a challenging and changing year for DESL.
It is important to recognise the great efforts and services Dornan employees have delivered to our customers on all our projects throughout the UK and Sweden, and to be proud of the work we have done together as an integrated team. On behalf of Bryan, Ronan, myself and the rest of the DESL board, I thank you for your past efforts and look forward to your continued support as we continue to build upon the current re-organisation of the UK business.
Some of our achievements in 2017:
Reaccreditation by Investors in People. Since 1991 Investors in People has set the standard for better people management. The standard defines what it takes to lead, support and manage people for sustained success. As a result of the reaccreditation, a clear action plan was developed to address the IiP findings and an implementation plan is ongoing. The plan outlines what needs to be done to provide a great working environment, and a framework where people can be the best at what they do. Current areas which we are attending to include:
• Defining roles and responsibilities • Improving inductions and on-boarding • Embedding performance management into what we do • Upskilling our managers and establishing training plans for all employees
In addition to the above, our Management, Estimating and Business Development teams have been working hard to secure new projects and 2018 promises to be our busiest year yet! Some of the notable project successes in 2017 include:
• Successful handover of Bracknell Town Centre and BDI Oxford • Pier 7 Heathrow completion • HSBC Tankersley Final Account Agreement • Ilford Rail Depot handover • Award of Economist Plaza scheme • Successful bid on Ferrybridge Power Station 2 with Hitachi Zosen, Switzerland • Signed contract on No. 1 Finsbury Avenue with Sir Robert McAlpine
More information on DESL events and successes can be find in this month’s Newsletter.
Christmas time is a period when we tend to take stock and reflect on the year gone by. It’s a time of celebration and respectful time with friends, colleagues, and family. I ask you to please remain vigilant of the hazards and dangers that exist on our sites and roads and always try and maintain focus on the tasks in hand and the welfare and health and safety of yourself and your colleagues (BE SAFE!)
I appreciate all the hard work, innovation, and tenacity shown by everyone over the past year and look forward to working with you in 2018.
Enjoy the festive break and I wish you and your family a very happy and safe Christmas, and a successful New Year. Sincerely, Tony O’Shea UK Director (DESL)

Hi All,
As many of you are aware at this stage, I changed position and function within the Group this year. In my new position I will be working closely with Bob Feaheny, Noel Sammon and Steve Fletcher in their capacities as Group QA Manager, Group BIM Manager, and Group Engineering Manager, respectively. This will ensure the continuous improvement of our systems and procedures in these areas, in line with the requirements of our business into the future. In my capacity as Technical Director, I will endeavour to assist in the development, promotion, coordination and harvesting of technical knowledge within the business, with particular emphasis on:
• Overseeing the management and development of our engineering capabilities and the professional development of our engineers to ensure that we realise the potential of our staff, thereby maximising the benefits to the business, career satisfaction and retention of the employees and satisfaction of our clients in the services we provide.
• Overseeing the management, development and the continuous improvement of our Quality Assurance system to ensure that it is in line with industry best practice, to maximise its relevance for our business today and into the future, to ensure its effectiveness at project level and to ensure that it is readily adopted as a useful tool by all employees, thus ensuring quality in project delivery at every project stage for all project activities.
• Overseeing the management and development of our BIM capabilities and expertise to ensure that the business maximises the potential of the BIM Process on each and every project through efficient and cost effective project delivery, to ensure that we are at the cutting edge of developments and technologies in BIM delivery to maximise efficiencies in the BIM delivery process.
To this end we have a number of initiatives completed, ongoing and planned for the future which are intended to help us in realising our goals. Here is a flavour of some of those initiatives:
• We have achieved ISO 9001 accreditation for our design procedures in 2017, bringing it in line with our other QA Procedures.
• We have issued 41 No. Engineering Bulletins since their inception almost 2 years ago, including 22 No. so far in 2017.
• We have rolled out the Engineering Graduate Training Programme in 2017, and it is currently available to all engineering graduates.
• The Monitored Professional Development Scheme is ongoing and is available to engineers and technicians wishing to achieve Professional Registration.
• Formal Appraisals for Technicians and Engineers are ongoing and we will provide feedback on 2017 Appraisals in the near future.
• Engineers Ireland Employers CPD Accreditation was renewed in 2017.
• We continue to attract high calibre graduates through the combined efforts of the engineering and HR Team.
• The Dornan Engineering Scholarship Scheme was rolled out in 2017.
• 2018 will see the Roll out of PREP Reviews for projects.
• Project Engineering Plans will be rolled out across all projects in 2018. Cont’d over………

• 2018 will see the Migration of our current QA System to ISO 9001:2015.
• We are currently developing a Project BIM Tool kit which will aim to improve the BIM Delivery Process on Projects.
• We will continue to grow and develop the Support QA, BIM and Engineering Teams in 2018 to continue the high quality services provided by those teams to our Project Teams.
• We will continue to promote targeted CPD in order to improve our Technical Capabilities.
• We will continue to improve work processes and procedures in order to ensure that we continue to deliver top quality services to our clients.
The delivery of these, and future initiatives, is in keeping with the ethos and goals of our mission statement which includes the following lines:
“Lead the successful completion of projects and strive for excellence in all that we undertake
Adapt to customer requirements and changing market conditions
Deliver agreed actions and projects on schedule
Use Environmental, Health & Safety practices that are based on sound principals and respect our environment
Invest in our resources, organisation and procedures to provide an environment where people enjoy working and achieve long term careers”
We have many more exciting initiatives in various stages of development and I would like to say a big thank you to all those involved in contributing to the development, execution and success of these initiatives.
As we continue to grow from strength-to-strength, and continue to accrue high calibre, skilled, competent and professional staff, we are conscious of the opportunity to learn from our new colleagues and I would encourage you to share your experiences and contribute to making us all better at what we do. As Mark Twain said “Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection.”
I look forward to working with you in 2018 agus ba mhaith liom Nollag síochánta duit féin agus do theaghlach.

Barry

The Grenfell Tower fire occurred on 14 June 2017 at the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of public housing flats in North Kensington, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, West London. It caused at least 80 deaths and over 70 injuries. The fire is one of the greatest tragedies to hit London in recent years and the community needed as much support as possible. Watching as people rallied together to provide food, shelter and moral support inspired us to become involved and to do what we can to aid those affected. On 3rd December at Victoria Park, in a sea of Santa’s, Joanna McGrath and Mary Groarke joined the London Santa Run for Charity. Joanna ran the 10k distance with her fabulous dog, Alfie, and Mary walked the 10k, and a little more when she got lost en route near the finish line! We were so proud to raise funds for the charity Family Action which has been instrumental in helping the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire. Thanks to our amazing supporters, we raised £1,571.00 which was matched by Dornan for a total of £3,141.00. An astonishing result! Again, thank you so much to all our supporters, and thank you Dornan!

Ring of Kerry 180km Charity Cycle 2017 – The Highs and Lows Highlights • Taking part in the cycle with 3 of my sisters • The uplifting drumming group playing on the top of one of the heights close to Kells in the deep fog, a steward told us they has
been there all day! • Reaching the Kenmare food & rest stop, almost there! • The sun coming out on the way up to Moll’s Gap (and getting to take off my rain jacket) • The DJ playing – ‘don’t stop me now’ and ‘eye of the tiger’ before the top of Moll’s Gap • When a van passed us 10km outside Killarney full of bikes from people who couldn’t finish, knowing we managed to stick through
it!! • Crossing the finish line • Getting off the bike at the end! • Lowlights • The torrential rain! - being soaked through 2 hours into the cycle (wondering why am I doing this!) • The non-existent views because of thick fog • Getting back on the bike after the Kenmare rest stop (body aching everywhere) knowing there was still around 40km to go • The number of ambulances passing by (Submitted by Joanna McGrath)
Joanna and her Sisters (with proud Mum in front)
Congratulations to Joanna McGrath, Josephine Kane, and Ronan Keohane, and to their family and friends, for finishing the Ring of Kerry Cycle! Bravo to all! Amazing!

When Dornan was asked to participate in a Children in Need project in London along with the Mace PREACH sector to complete a unique playground project, our team jumped at the chance to offer a helping hand to a worthy cause. The concept for this playground was designed primarily for Josh, a 9 year old boy that has Norrie Disease, a condition meaning he is profoundly blind (has no light perception at all). Josh attends the John Ball school in Blackheath and the aim was to allow him to play in the playground with his classmates - something he could not do as it was a very intimidating place. Tactile paving was used to help him get around. This had integrated elements of play so that the installation became something all the children could enjoy and had the 'hidden' benefit of navigation for Josh. It creates multiple meeting points all over the space so Josh can find his friends. The concept included 15 sets of speakers located in the playground activated by pressure pads to enable Josh to use the area via voice commands. The design concept was developed into a practical solution by our project team working in conjunction with Ruby Steel & Jude Pullen a designer from LEGO.
• The scope of our works also included the following • Install of both the ELV & LV cabling to all pressure pads, speakers and control panels through a new duct system. • Containment install to speakers • Install of playground speakers • Install of cabinets for speaker amplifiers. • Assistance in testing & commissioning of the system
As this was a Children in Need project due to be recorded and aired by the BBC, the deadlines were extremely tough. The program duration from the initial concept meeting to Project completion was less than 3 weeks. The playground was opened on Tuesday 17th October to Josh, his parents & his classmates with some amazing feedback from all. The project will feature on BBC 2 on the 8th of November at 9pm. Our management team on the project consisted of both James Ryan & Niall Martin, assisted by Josh Kamara & Chris Hammer for the installation. The team worked with both the constraints of the school opening hours and current project commitments to help deliver this difficult project. Well done to the team for contributing to this special project!
