Dorothy L. Simpson ARCS Foundation Seattle Chapter Leadership Award

ARCS Foundation Seattle Chapter is grateful to our 2021-2022 Partners for their generous support

Established in 2018 in honor of Dorothy Lewis Simpson (1924-2018), this award

recognizes an ARCS Fellow with exceptional qualities of leadership, intellectual

curiosity, and dedication to the greater good.

We are proud to name Dowen Jocson as the 2021 Dorothy L. Simpson Leadership

Award recipient. Dowen came to Washington State University in August 2018 to

pursue her PhD in Entomology after receiving a MS in Biology from Saint Louis

University. Her research at WSU is pioneering the use of acoustics to disrupt

mating in pear psylla, which can potentially alleviate increasing use of pesticides.

She hopes to provide a good foundation for this research before she graduates in

From a leadership perspective, Dowen

has shown a commitment to promoting

diversity and science. She is president

of the Entomology Graduate Student

Association, she served as a liaison to

WSU faculty, and she has mentored

and trained many women and

underrepresented minorities in STEM.

Dowen is also a founding member

of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Committee within the Entomology

Department, and she has contributed to

these efforts at the level of the entire
