Lab Safety

Why does it matter?

Use the correct ones for the job you will be doing

Remove gloves before using instruments, telephone, and leaving the laboratory

Laboratory hygiene

Do not eat, drink or smoke in a laboratory

Do not apply cosmetics

Do not touch your face, mouth or eyes

Do not suck pens or chew pencils

Glassware SafetyDo not dispose broken glassware in a regular trashcan.

When pouring liquids into glassware, make sure the container you are pouring into is resting on a table at least a hands breadth from the edge.

Spillages

Clear up spillage promptly

Dispose of any hazardous material as toxic waste“Messy workers are usually poor workers!!”

Electrical Hazard

Always do a visual check on electrical equipment before use, look for obvious wear or defects

Waste Disposal

Do not put materials down the drain or in with normal waste unless authorised to do so

Wear appropriate PPE when handling clinical waste

Chemical Safety Always add acid to water Pour from large containers to

smaller ones. Do not taste any chemical. Do not put your nose over

the container and inhale the fumes.

Fire HazardUse the smallest quantities of flammable solvents practicable.

Do not use a Bunsen burner in any area where flammable solvents are handled.

Risk of Infection If exposed to a bio hazardous specimen: Immediately wash the area with soap and H2O

Flush splashes to nose, mouth or skin with H2O

Irrigate eyes with clean H2O or saline

Perform background tests

Aseptic TechniquePerform proper hand washing

Reading Volume Measurements

All readings must be made with the eye on level with the meniscus to avoid parallax error.

Pipetting techniquesHold the pipet between the thumb and forefinger

Do not pipet using your mouth, use a rubber aspirator

Operating a CentrifugeDo not remove the cover of the centrifuge until it has come to a complete stop

Make sure the loads are balanced

Using microscopeGently wipe the lens with lens paper or muslin cloth

Always carry the microscope with one hand supporting the base and the other hand around the arm.

Sharps HazardsAlways use sterile,disposable needle

Never recap a needle

Dispose sharps in puncture-resistant, leak-proof container

Order of Draw and Inversion

SyringesAlways transfer immediately blood drawn from syringe into an evacuated tube

Transporting samples to the laboratory

Deliver samples to the laboratory within 45 minutes and centrifuge on arrival

Specimen Collection and Handling Procedures

Allow samples to clot fully before centrifugation to complete separation of the cells and serum

Protect bilirubin, Vit A and carotene samples from light
