The small version of a wide grid“A microgrid can be defined as an ensemble or a system of interconnected loads and distributed power generation resources, within certain defined electrical limits, which act as a sole controllable entity with respect to the grid, and which can be connected or disconnected from such grid so that they can work either as a connected system or as an isolated system”

MICROGRIDWHAT IS A MICROGRID?

COMPONENTSDistributed generation system

These can be power generation sources from renewa-ble origin (photovoltaic solar energy, mini wind, mini hydraulic turbines, fuel cells, etc.) or from conventional origin (diesel generators, natural gas, etc.)

Power storage systemStorage points for the energy generated by the micro-grid. They can be either electrical or thermal (batteries, flywheels, ultracapacitors, molten thermal salts, etc.)

Connected loads systemActual consumption points of the power generated by the microgrid, of an electrical-thermal nature and controllable or not.

Grid interconnection pointThe boundary point of the electrical circuit, where the microgrid is connected to the electrical grid. If the mi-crogrid is not connected to a grid (remote locations), its operation in “island” mode is considered.

Microgrid control systemsMicrogrid central control system, local controllers ((for generators and loads), communication systems and control logic distribution systems (algorithmics).

BENEFITS

Economic benefit optimisation and cost reduction regarding power supply, while maintaining the consumer’s comfort

An increase of the reliability of supply (ability to operate isolated from grid)

An increase of the efficiency of supply (loss reduction regarding transmission and distribution systems thanks to the closeness of generation sources)

An increase in energy supply systems’ manageability, quality and stability

A maximisation of the use of energy from renewable sources (sustainable commitment)

Environmental benefits (reduction of CO2 emissions thanks to the optimisation of the efficiency in energy consumption)

SPECIFIC APPLICATIONSFOR ISOLATED SYSTEMS

SUPPLY FOR REMOTE AND ISOLATED LOCATIONS

The use of microgrids allows for the sustainable social and financial development of remote or isolated locations in which the power supply from the grid is deficient or non-existent, achieving cost reduction regarding infrastructures and loss reduction during transport:

· Supply for existing population nuclei wich are isolated from the grid, with no connection to it

· Suministro para islas

· Planificación de nuevos núcleos de población en zonas aisladas de la red

SUPPLY FOR ISOLATED INDUSTRIAL CENTRES, COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES AND TOURIST RESORTS

The use of microgrids allows for the financial development of business activities in said sectors, in locations which are currently unfeasible or where shortcomings in the power supply system are numerous, and/or which need closeness to primary resources:

· Extractive industry (mining, gas and oil)

· Manufacturing industry

· Processing industry · Commercial and tourist centres and complexes

Page 10: DOSSIER 2017 MICROGRIDS · The small version of a wide grid “A microgrid can be defined as an ensemble or a system of interconnected loads and distributed power generation resources,

SPECIFIC APPLICATIONSFOR ISOLATED SYSTEMS II

SUPPLY FOR CRITICAL LOCATIONS

The use of microgrids allows for the security and manageability of supply in these locations which have special requirements, in case of lack or failure of main supply:

· Penal institutions

· Hospitals and other health centres

· Military compounds and bases

· Various security facilities (banks, reserves, etc.)

SUPPLY FOR TRAINING LOCATIONS

The use of microgrid allows for the operation of these locations in an autonomous way, isolated from the grid, which allows to place them at preselected locations, which are chosen according to more accommodating features::

· University campus

· Vocational education centres

· Military academies

Page 11: DOSSIER 2017 MICROGRIDS · The small version of a wide grid “A microgrid can be defined as an ensemble or a system of interconnected loads and distributed power generation resources,

Integrating microgrids in energy distribution and transport networks belonging to utilities and grid operators in order to improve the reliability, the features and the manageability of their networks, and including them in upper structures such as smart grid.

A microgrid can offer interesting grid services (ancillary services) to the utility or grid operator, such as:

• Grid frequency regulation services

• Grid voltage regulation services

• Load following services

• Production increases control services (ramping)

• Integration of renewable energy sources

• Other services

FOR GRID-CONNECTED SYSTEMS

A microgrid can offer several interesting grid services (ancillary services) to the utility or grid operator.

INTEGRATED PROJECTSOLUTION

Page 13: DOSSIER 2017 MICROGRIDS · The small version of a wide grid “A microgrid can be defined as an ensemble or a system of interconnected loads and distributed power generation resources,

THE CONCEPT OF INTEGRATED BUSINESS SOLUTIONEnergía Aljaval, through its multidisciplinary team and its strategic alliances with partners which are repre-sentative of the energy sector, can offer the client an integrated proposal for a technical-economic solution, adapted to the specific needs of each case, including the implementation of every necessary phase for the life cycle of an installation project for a microgrid of different types, such as:

• Initial consultancy

• Basic engineering and Executive Engineering

• Project development

• Signing of trade agreements (PPA)

• Project Management

• EPC

• Operation and maintenance (O&M)

Page 14: DOSSIER 2017 MICROGRIDS · The small version of a wide grid “A microgrid can be defined as an ensemble or a system of interconnected loads and distributed power generation resources,

ENGINEERING

• Pre-dimensioning of the facilities and initial technical studies

• Development of technical specifications, both for the im-plementation of technical projects and for tenders

• Development of a basic engineering technical project

• Development of an Executive Engineering technical project

• Development of an “as built” technical project

• Technical documentation needed for the legalisation and commissioning of the facilities

CONSULTING

• Analysis and definition of the client’s needs and requirements

• Assessment of current situation

• Analysis and technical assessment of the solution
