I play CDs as I still like the feel with the pushand pull that vinyl gives you when you play aDJ set. With the new CDJs that are around atthe moment you can do loads of loops andtricks to extend the tracks that you are playingor work with different sound effects within themusic that you are playing. I do think thatvinyl has a warmer sound than digital, butdigital has a clearer sound. However, vinyl canbe a pain when you're traveling acrosscontinents because airlines won't let you bringthem on the plane. I do think vinyl is making acomeback, as I have noticed a lot of artistsreleasing their music again only on Vinyl, andlots of online vinyl shops are popping upeverywhere. I don't do digital mixing eventhough everyone says it's the future and thatyou can carry more music on one laptop and itseasier to mix with. I think it takes away the artof DJing and it looks like you're on Facebookwhile you're playing and I think that you loosea part of the connection with the crowd. Buteach to their own… I think that you should usewhatever suits you as a DJ, whatever makesyou feel comfortable and whatever helps youget the best out of your DJ sets.

At the moment I'm working on some tracks tobe released this summer with Housesessionscalled “Its time” made with Oliver Lang of“Bora Bora” and Steve Haines. Also, anothertrack called “Q mas” with myself and DJ Lewiwhich will be released on SUKA Records on the29th of July. And I have another track called“Scream” made with Prok and Fitch and FilthyRich under the Sudo name of the UnionJackers. I also have compilations out at themoment with Housesessions called “TheSummer Opening Parties,” and a compilationwith SUKA records and another compilation forHat Club coming out in September.

Norman Cook is one of the most famous DJsin the world. He's also a platinum sellingdance music producer. But more thananything else, he knows how to fashion, buildand sustain an incredibly energeticatmosphere wherever he performs.

The last time I saw Norman Cook DJing livewas back in the summer of 2002, at the biggestand most infamous of his now defunct BrightonBig Beach Boutique parties. That evening, Iremember, the mood along Brighton's lengthyand illuminated promenade was simplyelectric. The place was ineffably alive; youcould feel the pavements reverberating withbass and smell the scent of pure excitement inthe air. Even before Cook took to the stage, hispresence was overtly obvious and worked toturn even the most demure girls and boys inthe crowd into wild and screaming partyanimals. And when he finally appeared behindthe turntables the entire seafront quicklyexploded in a jaw dropping fit of lights andgenre defying house music.

On Wednesday night, well before NormanCook announced himself to the White Islecrowd, the mood inside the courtyard of theIbiza Rocks Hotel was similarly raucous. Itwas the same atmosphere, the same kind ofenergy that I'd felt in Brighton all those years

Indeed, if Norman Cook had of been alivethree thousand years ago, the Greekaristocracy would have hired him as one oftheir chief Entertainers. And if he'd beenaround in the days of Nero, the Roman elitistswould have called him an Artiste and askedhim to unleash his musical circus before thealways troublesome and party hungry masses.But instead, Norman Cook was born in 1963, inBromley, England, and after making a namefor himself within the mushrooming acid housescene of the mid-1980's, he decided to re-brand himself as Fatboy Slim… which, inretrospect, makes a hell of a lot of sense,because Cook's ingenious stage-name hasworked to enchant the imaginations of millionsof fans all around the world and helped to makehim a major global superstar. In fact, thename Fatboy Slim is so powerful, so wellknown that even Cook himself found itimpossible to slay his own legendary alter ego.It was back in 2008, if I remember correctly,that Cook announced to the world that FatboySlim was dead. But, apparently, the Fatboypersona was too lively to hold down and theroad-show, as they say, continues to roll-on tothis day.

All of which is good news for Ibiza Rocks,because when Fatboy Slim took to the giantHotel stage a little after 10pm on June 22 ,2011, something incredible happened to thevenue - the building itself appeared to pull in agulp of oxygen and then, after a dramatisedpause, slowly exhale.I turned to Victor Spinelli who was stood next

to me on the press balcony taking photos withhis fancy turbo-charged camera. “The place isalive,” I said. “Hold on tight…”

I watched on as Senor Slim sprinted acrossthe stage, wearing an orange coloured poloshirt, blue shorts and a pair of streamlinedaction pumps, making his way toward a specialDJ raft which had been wheeled out onlymoments earlier. The crowd cheeredvociferously as soon as he appeared and arhythmic blast of sonic lighting pulsed aroundthe arena like fine bursts of electricity firing onan oversized circuit board. Fatboy droppeddown to his knees and sat for a moment, cross-legged, meditating beneath his blinking stackof DJ equipment. The stage quickly sank intosemidarkness; an elucidated face appeared onthe huge plasma screen at the back of thestage… and then, just as the vocals from “

high speakers, Cook jumped up and punchedthe air… and everyone in the audience quicklyrealised that they were in for a very specialnight.

For the next two hours or so, the 3,000capacity crowd inside the Ibiza Rocks Hotelwere treated to a non-stop barrage of partytunes and dance anthems - like Fatboy himself,the music was terrifically playful and funky - arelentless big-beat stomp that never oncesounded commercial or frenzied.

Throughout his set, Fatboy dominated thestage like a true master of his trade, alwaysdemanding attention from the young andcheering audience, all of whom, I could see,felt as if they were part of the show. Ratherthan dictating to his flock, Cook prefers topamper his followers with musical messagesthat are uncomplicated and effortlessly easy tounderstand, and this, I think, is one of thereasons you get such a good party atmospherewherever he goes. While some superstar DJstake themselves extraordinarily seriously,Cook emits an air of approachability that worksto draw his audiences toward him. As one top-level DJ once told me, “...before you can tear acrowd to pieces, first you have to relax them…”All of which is true, because without the entirecrew on-board, no vessel can properly sail offinto the mystic, and Cook, more than anyoneelse on the modern DJ circuit, seems to have ahandle on these recurrent performance truths.Until the Fatboy Slim gig, I hadn't quite got to

grips with the Ibiza Rocks brand. Its ethos hadsomehow passed me by and I was struggling tofully absorb the philosophy of the place. Imissed the Plan B party - which everyone toldme was a fantastic night - and when I arrivedfor the Wombats concert, I'd only recentlyspoiled my dinner and thus my mood waspitched at a rather rotten angle. But onWednesday night, everything came togetherand I finally saw with my own wide eyes thatthe Ibiza Rocks brand does, after all, have ahuge thumping heart and an especiallyemotive soul… and is, without doubt, one ofthe foremost musical venues on the island.

The very first time I visited Ibiza was with myparents when I was young, but I have beencoming back pretty much ever since. One yearwhen I was with my family, as a teenager Imanaged to get away at night. With mybrother we went to some of the islands clubsand they blew me away. The size of Privilege,the music in Amnesia, and the fact that waterwas pumped into the dancefloor of Es Paradis -it was all quite crazy when I grew up in a prettyrural town in England.

I spent a season in Ibiza about 12 years agonow and that was the first time I played on theisland in some of the bars. Then about fiveyears ago I played Space a few times and I'vereally been playing on and off at Space fordifferent nights ever since. It's a great club towork with.
