Microsoft started development of .NET Framework in the late 1990s.

At first Microsoft named .NET as Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS).

First beta versions of .NET 1.0 were released in the end of 2002 and latest stable update released in 2016.

Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel worked to standardize Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and C#.

.NET Framework is intended to be used by most new applications created for the Windows platform

.NET Framework introduces a Common Type System (CTS) that defines all possible data types and programming constructs

.NET framework contains four components. In that four components CLR and FCL are major

1. Common Language Runtime (CLR)

2. Framework Class Libraries (FCL).

3. Common Type System (CTS)

4. Common Language Specification (CLS)




.NET Introduction: Architecture Components

Common Language Runtime(CLR): .NET Framework provides runtime environment called Common Language Runtime (CLR).It provides an environment to run all the .NET Programs. The code which runs under the CLR is called as Managed Code.

.Net Framework Class Library (FCL): The .NET Framework class library is a library of classes, interfaces, and value types that provide access to system functionality.

Common Type System (CTS): It describes set of data types that can be used in different .Net languages in common .i.e. CTS ensures that objects written in different .Net languages can interact with each other.

Common Language Specification (CLS): It is a sub set of CTS and it specifies a set of rules that needs to be adhered or satisfied by all language compilers targeting CLR. It helps in cross language inheritance and cross language debugging.

Gives stable support to XML, cascading style sheets (CSS), and other new and established Web standards
