What is the flu? This contagious illness affects the respiratory system (nose, throat and lungs) and is caused by a virus. The symptoms of the flu include: fever, dry cough, head ache, body ache, sore throat and being overly tired. Droplets in the air from an infected person talking, sneezing or cough-ing, spread this virus. This may be before someone even knows they are sick. The onset of symptoms may be sudden and can be severe, lasting for several days. These symptoms can range from mild to moder-ate to severe and even life threatening.

Who should get a flu vaccination? Everyone older than six months should be vaccinated. People who are at higher risk such as those who are less than age two and more than 65 years old, those with chronic health conditions like heart dis-ease, pregnant women and those who are American Indian and Alaskan Na-tives should be vaccinated. Anyone can get the flu. You cannot get the flu from the vaccination. You may see slight symptoms after receiving the vaccination such as a runny nose or a slight fever, however this is only the body’s natural

reaction of building an im-mune response to the vac-cine. The flu season is typi-cally from October through April but you can get a flu shot at any time during the season. Children who are sixmonths to eight years old may need two doses depending on if they have received a flu vaccine pre-viously. It is important to check with your provider.

Types of flu vaccine: There are different types of vaccines that are appro-priate for different types of people. There is a nasal spray that can be given to healthy non-pregnant people 2-50 years old. The quadrivalent vaccine pro-tects against four types of the flu virus. High-dose vaccine is typically for people 65 and over. It pro-vides the development of a stronger immune re-sponse for better protec-tion. There are also new types of vaccinations that are not made with eggs and therefore people with egg allergies will be able to receive these.

How do I protect myself and what if I think I have the flu? It is important to get vaccinated, avoid

those who are sick and large crowds. Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve, not your hand. Make sure that you are washing your hands fre-quently and cleaning com-monly touched items like the phone. If you are sick, stay home and avoid con-tact with others. Get plenty of fluids to drink and rest. Treat the fever with Tyle-nol or Ibuprofen according to the instructions.

If you are in the high-risk group and develop symptoms of the flu you should call your provider when symptoms develop. They will decide if a flu test and antiviral medica-tions are needed. A trip to your providers office or the emergency room will be needed if you have shortness of breath or dif-ficulty breathing, bluish skin color, shaking, chills, pain/pressure in the chest or abdomen, confusion, persistent vomiting or symptoms that improve and then get worse. Other symptoms that may be seen in children include, not drinking or urinating enough or no tears when crying.

What is the difference between flu and cold symptoms?

Respiratory flu and the stomach flu: The respira-tory flu is not the same as the stomach flu. Many peo-ple call nausea and vomit-ing the flu when actually it is gastroenteritis. This illness is typically caused by the Norovirus. This vi-rus causes inflammation of the stomach and intes-tines. Symptoms consist of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, muscle aches, headache, and fe-ver/chills. These symp-toms usually begin 24-48 hours after exposure to the virus. The virus can live in the stool and vomit of an ill person. Some peo-ple can be carriers of this virus and not get sick. This illness lasts from 1-2 days and one of the biggest con-cerns is dehydration. This will affect the very young and the old with weak immune systems with a greater incidence. This illness is spread through transfer to food and wa-ter as well as unwashed hands or contaminated surfaces. If you have this illness, drink plenty of flu-ids to replace those that are lost, and prevent dehy-dration. Wash your hands frequently and do not cook foods for others for at least 3 days after recovery from this illness. Make sure to clean frequently touched items or surfaces regularly to prevent the spread of this virus.
