Double Page Spread Statement of Intent Guide

WHAT layout will you be using for your Double Page Spread (This relates to the use of COLUMNS and GRIDS

in planning your Double Page Spread) and WHY?The layout I will be using for my magazine, is different from the typical ways of other double page spreads. My double page spread will be using the main image as the background. The text will be placed around the image, creating two columns, on each page. Below I have created a mock up of the kind of layout I want my double page spread to take. I decided to use this design for my magazine because it challenges the normal format of VIBE’s double page spread, I looked at a different genre of music and decided to follow their double page spread. On the second page of my music magazine I have decided to use two columns. On the first page I have decided to only use one. I did this because I didn’t want the text to interfere with the image. I liked the way in which, the magazine looks like a flow of ideas, I wanted to portray this in my double page spread. Not too much structure to draw attention from my target audience. Through m mock up at the bottom I changed the horizontal format of the text to a vertical one.

WHAT principal components of a magazine layout will you be using in the construction of your Double Page Spread and

WHY?

The components in my magazine that I will be using are a simple image from the front cover of my magazine. I have decided to use this because it will merge my double page spread and my front cover together.

Page 6: Double page spread analysis

WHAT type of images, graphics (i.e. Boxes, borders and rules) will you be using to make your Double Page Spread appeal your target

audience and WHY?

I will only be using only one shot for my double page, in order to keep the double page simple and not over crowded. I wouldn’t want to distract my audience too much away from the text. I will not be having too much graphics on my double page spread because I wouldn’t want it to be overbearing for my audience.

Page 7: Double page spread analysis

WHAT image/images will you be using for your Double Page Spread and WHY will it/they appeal to your potential target

audience?

I will be using an image from the artist for the main article ‘Ebonie’ because I will like my double page spread and my front cover to work together. It will appeal to my target audience because it is very simple, something my target audience prefer simplicity.

Page 8: Double page spread analysis

WHAT do you want the image/images to tell your audience and WHY?

I want the image to tell my audience a little something extra about the artist that will be featured in the article. I will like it to be an insight into the kind of life the artist lives, and additional information for my target audience.

WHAT story/stories will you be including in your Double Page Spread and WHY will it/they be related to the

image/images?

The story that will be on my double page spread is the story of a woman, who started all the way at the bottom and works her way up, the story will give a little insight into the female artist, it will tell the audience something about her, which they can all take home and learn from her. The image will be of the artist on top of the piano, which is her best instrument in which she plays, and is also an instrument typically used in R&B.

WHAT effect does the REPRESENTATION as portrayed by the image/images used for your Double Page Spread have

on your intended target AUDIENCE?

The representation of the image, is just a single image which isn’t too saucy or sexual. I will like my target audience to know that R&B isn't all about being sexual but the kind of music one can produce which can change the life of the people who hear it. The image is just a singular image, with simple clothing, I decided to this because I didn’t want my audience to see the exterior but to learn about the interior.

Page 11: Double page spread analysis

WHAT is the MODE OF ADDRESS of the major story on your Double Page Spread? (MODE OF ADDRESS: This is a very important media term. It simply means how your story speaks

to your potential target audience, and involves them; it also involves how a story INFLUENCES an audience to respond to it in a certain way)

WHAT colour scheme (shades, tints and colours) will you be using and WHY?

I have decided to stick to a very simple colour scheme, of pink, whit e and blue. I decided to this again to allow the reader to see in the interior of the artist rather than the exterior. I didn’t want to over bear the page with too much, so this is why I kept this like this. The main image of the double page spread is the background of the double page spread. I wanted my target audience to see more than a face, and too understand the story of the artist.

Page 12: Double page spread analysis

WHAT main story will be included in your Double Page Spread e.g. Interviews, commentary about events, artist

gigs etc., and WHY?

The main story of my double page spread will be of the artist in the form of interview. I will like the artist and the target audience to be able to create a relationship, a bond in which the artist responds to question, I felt this will be the most effective.

Page 13: Double page spread analysis

HOW will you be arranging the information on your Double Page Spread and WHY?

I will be arranging the image either aligned to the left or the right of either page, again to elicit the simplicity of the artist.

Page 14: Double page spread analysis

WHAT type of fonts and font sizes (style of lettering used) will you be using for your Double Page Spread and WHY?

Media Concepts: REPRESENTATION & AUDIENCE. (Investigate these!)

I will be using a simple font size, on my magazine which I downloaded from dafont.com. It is simple again pushing the message of simplicity forward. I will be using a font size of ‘22’ and upwards. I will like to represent my double page spread as a fun way of interacting with artist, you learn more about the artist.
