DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS

Kate Sutton

Page 2: Double page spread analysis

Top of the Pops Top of the Pops use a quote from inside the interview as a page headline to gain the readers attention and to give a small amount of information on what the spread is about to gain interest. They use the colour red for the first half of the title not only to grab attention but to also link the colour scheme to the rest of the page.

They use a stand first that is very small within a graphological feature of the magazine in order to shorten the amount of text on the page as well as using it to gain attention.

A large image is used on half of the double page spread to reduce the amount of text over the page. This would appeal to the target audience as due to the magazine and nature of the article it is aimed at young teen girls, whom wouldn’t enjoy reading masses of text and would lose interest.

Again a smaller image is used to break up text but it also reveals more about the contents of the article. It shows people what kind of text it is and what it will contain. Every image involving the article has a small caption underneath which enables the reader to know who the image is of and where about they are. Captions also give directions of the people situated on the page.

Using a faded out subheading above the main headline draws attention as normally there is nothing at the top of the page apart from the title. This shows the reader what is in the article and that it is ‘Exclusive’. This would be intriguing to readers as it means that it is nowhere else and they have to read if they want to find out the contents of the article.

QThe only image on this double page spread takes up a whole page. This not only makes there seem like there is less text but it also shows the reader what the spread is about and who it is about.

The drop cap takes up the length of the entire page. This is used to add dynamics as a graphological feature and draw attention to the page. It is in the colour red as not only is it the most eye catching colour, but it ties in the colour scheme of the whole magazine to the page.

The page number and magazine logo is in small writing in the corner in order to structure the magazine and make it fluent, and easier to understand.

Drop caps are also used for paragraph headings to make the page seem less crowded and to add dynamics to the page.

The name of the person that the article features is displayed at the top of the page. This happens in order to let the reader know who is involved and what the story is about. It gives people an interest to make them want to read on.

Mix Mag A quote from the article has been used as the headline for the page to engage the readers immediately and give away some of the pages contents. The fact that it changes colour over the use of emotive language makes it graphologically intriguing and also links the colour scheme to the rest of the page.

The use of two small images adds layers to the page to make it seem more interesting and takes room away from the text so it doesn’t look as ‘full’ and people are more willing to read it.

The main image on the page appears to have relevance to the title as well as being edited in order to link the colour scheme to the images on the page. It will encourage the reader to find out more about the story through the genre of magazine that it is, will appear to an audience interested in either the title or image.

The contents of the page are highlighted when they make a relevant point. This one involves the year in which is relevant to the small image in the right hand corner. This technique again will make readers curious as they want to see why it has been highlighted and what it is about.

A boarder of yellow and black diagonal stripes has been used to break up the page and make it seem more interesting, as well as again tying in the colour scheme across the whole page. The colours used are identical to that of the ‘toxic’ sign which has relevance again to the title and make people wonder what it is that they did, and are talking about.
