Main image – The main image for this double page spread is an extreme close up of Jay Z’s face. This obviously indicates the that article is about him. He is wearing dark colours including a black t- shirt and blacked out sunglasses which creates a very serious and dark image which relates to his very serious facial expression with his mouth completely closed and look directly at the camera. However this contradicts with the running theme of red. As we can see half of his face is covered by a red light. Red has connotations of Love, passion and danger. They have done one shade red and one normal to show that the artist has two sides to him which you will find out further by reading into the article. Colour scheme – The article follows a red, white and black theme throughout. This makes it stand out a lot and become very eye catching for the reader for Examples having a white background then red font saying ‘Jay Z’ stands out and it then becomes clear straight away what the article is about along with the main image. So the fact that the colours clash means it comes very eye catching and makes you want to read it more. Title – The title ‘The most exciting people in music’ follows the classic codes and conventions of a magazine as it is placed right at the top of the page and is in bigger front than the rest of the Layout – On the double page spreads articles are more often than not set out in columns so it makes it easier for the reader to read and makes it look a lot more neater. This follows the codes and conventions of a magazine as no matter what magazine you read it will have articles and on these articles the text will usually be set out in a column style. Also the text itself will usually be very informal so that the reader finds it fun to read and will learn something rather than being bored reading it and end up not finishing it. Furthermore articles will usually make the first letter of each paragraph significantly bigger than the rest of the text. Here Q have done this but on top of that the background of the text is a huge ‘J’ which is taking up the whole second page of the article. This draws in attention to Jay Z as that is the first letter of his name. Page number – The page numbers also follow the codes and conventions of magazines as they have the numbers at the bottom of the page to indicate to the reader what page they’re on. Page 1: Double page spread analysis

Main image – The main image for this double page spread is an extreme close up of Jay Z’s face. This obviously indicates the that article is about him. He is wearing dark colours including a black t-shirt and blacked out sunglasses which creates a very serious and dark image which relates to his very serious facial expression with his mouth completely closed and look directly at the camera.

Title – The title ‘The most exciting people in music’ follows the classic codes and conventions of a magazine as it is placed right at the top of the page and is in bigger front than the rest of the text to indicate what it is.

Layout – On the double page spreads articles are more often than not set out in columns so it makes it easier for the reader to read and makes it look a lot more neater.

This helps as they will then know where to go when they read the contents page and see an article they want to read as they can then go straight there rather than flicking through all the pages until you find it.

Pull quote – A pull quote from the article and interviews is placed on top of the main image of Jay Z. this is used to attract the attention of the reader as it is the artists own words. It is usually a quote from an interesting or exciting part of the interview which will make the reader want to read in to the full interview. It is in big bold and red font which makes it very eye catching. It also follows the on going Q colour scheme of red, black and white.

Page 2: Double page spread analysis

Title – The title ‘In good health’ follows some codes and conventions of a magazine but not all. It is in a very large font which makes it stand out to the reader however it is not directly at the top of the page but instead is on top of the main image. This is because the image is of the artist holding two pints of beer in each hand which contradicts with the title of ‘In good health’.

Page number – The page numbers also follow the codes and conventions of magazines as they have the numbers at the bottom of the page to indicate to the reader what page they’re on. This helps as they will then know where to go when they read the contents page and see an article they want to read as they can then go straight there rather than flicking through all the pages until you find it.

Pull quote – A pull quote from the article and interviews is placed in the middle of the article. this is used to attract the attention of the reader as it is the artists own words. It is usually a quote from an interesting or exciting part of the interview which will make the reader want to read in to the full interview. It is in bigger font than the rest of the article with some words being in bold, this makes it very eye catching. It also follows the on going NME colour scheme of red, black and white.

Main image – The main image on this article is a mid-shot of Pete Doherty. This is because the article is about him. In this picture he is holding a pint of beer and another drink (most likely alcahol). This contradicts the article title of ‘In good health’ as obviously alcahol is not good for your health. The image gives hints of what the article may cover and talk about. Using a big image of the artist that covers a whole page will stick out and appeal to fans of this and when they see it, it will make them want to read into it and find out more about him.

Layout – On the double page spreads articles are more often than not set out in columns so it makes it easier for the reader to read and makes it look a lot more neater. For example NME have made the ‘A’ extremely bigger than the rest of the article to mark the start of it and then further into the article the same thing happens to the letter ‘F’ but its not as big as the ‘A’ because it is just a new paragraph.

Colour scheme – The article follows a red, white and black theme throughout. This makes it stand out a lot and become very eye catching for the reader. However is not your typical bright read and is actually more dull than usual, this links to the genre of rock and how it is associated with a lot more dark colours. The background in the main image is very dark and dull which again links to the genre however the white font is fairly bright which makes it stand out a lot and that is the first thing you see when looking at the article.
