DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD IMAGES

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD MAIN IMAGE This image will be across the bottom of the page below the main body of text. I wanted an image that was of the artist lying down across a bed this is unusual on a double page spread so the unusual image choice/set up will reflect the alternative style of magazine. I set up the scene and took photos. They are all close up portraits.

I don’t like this one (left) because of the way her hair looks in the photo. It is quite flat which may display her in an unfashionable light. I want her to be seen as a fashion icon as well as an inspiring artist so she needs to look very pretty and conform to the mass media beauty myth and have fuller hair. Also the heels cannot be fully seen in the image.

I like this one (left) because I like the position with her legs crossed in the background. However, her smile looks forced and slightly unnatural so I would prefer a photo with a genuine-looking smile so that she can be shown in a positive, cheerful, happy way. All of the photos are well lit and clear to see, they are all suitable to be the main double page spread image in that respect.

I like this one (right) because her legs are slightly further

away from her body so it would fit better across the magazine

double page. The smile is more genuine that the shot opposite which makes her look happier.

However I don’t like the placement of her hand at the

side of her face and I would prefer if her hands were down

in front of her so that the reader can see the detail of the lace on

her dress better. This will help to make her more of a

fashion/style icon for readers to aspire to be like.

I like this one (right) the most out of the ones that I took.

This is because her smile looks genuine, her hands are

in front of her body so they do not obscure any part of

her dress, her legs are further from her body which will be

useful when it spreads across a double page. Her heels can

also be seen clearly which support the fashion aspect of the way that she is presented

in my magazine. I will use Photoshop to edit the

contrast/brightness etc. to make it look more ‘indie’.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD SECONDARY IMAGES My inspiration for the secondary images come from the classic rock magazine that I analysed earlier in the course. The photos used were in a casual setting with the artist photographed in her won home. This created an impersonal feel and created a connection between the reader and the artist. This is what I want to achieve with my images so I have photographed her doing day-to-day activities. This was to aim for the reader to relate to the artist and aspire to be like them as she is doing ‘normal’ things so to be like her would be easy. The way I am presenting them is across the top of the page within a white frame in the style of a polaroid picture. This is to reflect the indie style of my magazine because in popular culture things such as a polaroid etc. are trendy so it will attract my target audience. It is also an unconventional, interesting way to show the images so people will be more likely to remember it. The style of the images (casual, impersonally shot) also back up the polaroid idea because polaroid images are known for being not professionally shot and they capture moments and memories, people usually write captions underneath them. The use of the day-to-day activities being shown in this way work well. There will be four images across the top. One of the photos will be her putting on lipstick to back up the fashion and beauty side of her. The second one will be her at her desk on her laptop. The third will be her reading a book, this shot was inspired by the image from classic rock of the artist reading on her bed. And the final shot will be her sitting down in a white chair, the contrast of the back dress against the white chair will make her stand out. All of these are normal things that everyday people do, this will help the reader to relate to the artist.

This shot is an over-the-shoulder shot of her putting on lipstick. This shot is associated with someone watching you, this works in the way that I would like because it is as if the reader is watching the famous artist and being given an insight into their life. You can see her head and also her reflection in the images. All three are well lit and she is the main focus of each image with nothing detracting from the attention on her. I don’t like shot 1 because her hands are in the way of her mouth and it is not completely obvious that she is putting on lipstick. Shot 2 is good because you can clearly see what she is doing but I don’t like it because she is rubbing her lips together so you cant see them, I would prefer a shot that showed her physically putting on lipstick. Shot 3 is good because she is in the process of putting the lipstick on so it is clear what she is doing. It is also good because her facial features look very defined in it, the cheekbones stand out which conforms to the mass media idea of beauty so people will want to be like her. I will use shot 3.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD SECONDARY IMAGES

These shots are of the artist on a laptop. This is so the reader can relate to her because just going online is a thing that my target audience of young people would do very often. They are all well lit and easy to see with a nice, fairly plain background which brings the attention to the artist. Shot 1 is good because she is smiling which shows her as happy, the smile also looks genuine which is good to create the ‘spontaneous’ polaroid effect. Shot 2 is not very good because her face is obscured and the tilt of the camera makes it look strange. Shot 3 is good because she is concentrating on the computer, making it seem more like the reader is being given a private insight into her life, but I don’t like the strong blue glare of the computer screen on her face as it looks unnatural and cold. I think I will use shot 1 because it depicts her as cheerful and the visible laptop allows young people to relate.

These shots show her reading a book. They are all focused on her and she isn’t paying attention to the camera. This is good because it shows her engrossed in the book. The basic connotations of reading books are that if you do, you are smart. This helps to show an intelligent side to her as well as the one of fashion and beauty as displayed in my other images. They all have plain, pale backgrounds which keep the attention on the artist and because she is wearing black, she stands out well. Shot 1 is good because she is very concentrated on the book, you can also see which book it is from the front cover (harry potter). This series is iconic, well-loved, and read by many. This helps the reader to relate to the artist if they have also read this book, if they haven't then they may be influenced to buy it by this artist that they aspire to be like. Shot 2 is not as good because she is facing away from the camera so her

face is not clearly seen, also the book cover cannot be seen in this shot. I like shot 3 because she is smiling to show she’s enjoying reading. The book cover can also be very clearly seen in this shot. However, I don’t like the position of her hand holding the book because her finger is raised and obstructs a small part of her face, this is not good because I want her face to be fully seen. I will use shot 1.

I don’t like shot 1 because of the expression she is pulling, she is rubbing her lips together and I would prefer a shot where she is paying attention to the camera or smiling. In this shot, you can also not see her lipstick which is an important part of showing her as fashionable and beautiful. Also her hand is blurred as she is moving it. However, I do like the lighting because it makes it clear and easy to see.

Shot 2 is good because she is looking directly at the camera and it is relatively eye level, this helps the reader to feel like they are connected to the artist. It is a medium shot of her sitting in the chair, her dress contrasts highly against the pale white/cream background. The expression is good and is different to the other images I have chosen, this will add diversity.

I like shot 3 because she is smiling and her body is off-centre which adds variety. However it is blurred and not in focus so would not be suitable for a magazine image. I would also prefer to diversify my images by having different facial expressions, There are already 2 images on my double page spread of her smiling so a different one would make it more interesting by adding variation.

THE IMAGES I HAVE CHOSEN.

My main inspiration for the style of images I would use in my double page spread came from Classic Rock magazine and from Mojo; the double page spread of mojo featured images that were of the artist in her own home which is what I have done here. This was done to create a casual, informal connection between the reader and the artist and to allow them to relate more. My demographic are aspirers so they want to be like the artists in the magazines, by showing the artist doing every-day activities, it is easier for them to feel connected to the celebrity. The classic rock main image was a simple one in the back of a taxi, this humanizes the celebrities and makes them seem more down-to-earth.
