Dehydrating Sugar with AcidMay 28, 2007When acid is added to sugar, the result appears to be a smoldering tower ofgunk. This classic classroom demonstration is an example of a dehydrationreaction. The acid "steals" water from the sugar, turning it into pure carbon. This experiment has a video of the reaction--and explains where all that heatcomes from!Click here to read more about Dehydrating Sugar with Acid
2006 Nobel Prize CelebrationOctober 03, 2006
Today the Nobel Committee announced the winners of the 2006 prizefor physics. This year's laureates John C. Mather and George F. Smootwon "for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of thecosmic microwave background radiation." Both laureates are in someway associated with the University of California, Berkeley: Mather is analumnus and Smoot is a professor. Therefore, it is Mad Physics's distinctpleasure to show you our pictures from Smoot's official Nobel Prizereception at the physics department!Click here to read more about 2006 Nobel Prize Celebration

Synthesizers and the Doppler EffectSeptember 29, 2006When people are asked to describe THX's trademark "Deep Note," their initialresponse is usually either loud or big. However, the loudness is a bit of an
illusion. Sound Designer Gary Rydstrom pointed out that from a technicalstandpoint, 'Deep Note' just feels loud because it has a spectrum of frequenciesthat grows from small to large. With that in mind, today well try to reproduce
that big sound with some basic physics and some cool electronics. Click here to read more aboutSynthesizers and the Doppler Effect
Vibrating Gillette Razors
April 02, 2006Recently, Gillette introduced a series of battery powered vibrating razors.Being a bit of a gadget man myself, I couldn't resist getting the M3Power, aswell as its 5-bladed successor, the Fusion. Silly names aside, these razorsactually did work, but how...and why? Since Joost prefers electric shaversto razors, I knew I would be alone on this one. After buying the Fusion, I didn'tfeel too bad smashing my M3. Here are the results.Click here to read more about Vibrating Gillette Razors

Centripedal Motion and TiresYou can't have a good car without good tires. Actually, you can, but the tiresdo help! Yes, when it comes to performance drivingor really, any kind ofdrivingits important to have proper tires. One fan asked us why tires areinflated. Well, inflation ensures not only an even footprint with the road, butalso keeps the tirenice and snug against the rim. We set up a simulation of what happens whenyou don't do things right. Take a lookClick here to read more about Centripedal Motion and Tires
How a CRT Display WorksMarch 11, 2006We went to the local thrift store (on half price Monday!) and boughtourselves a fully-functioning CRT Television for $3.75. Needless to say, itdoesn't work anymore. Check out our senseless destruction in the name ofscience.Click here to read more about How a CRT Display Works
Black Powder
October 17, 2005We had a spare canister of black powder
in our lab (dont ask), which we found to be the perfect opportunity to blow
some stuff up. The camera suffered some burn marks, but the experiment stillmade for some good video clips.

Alka-Seltzer RocketsOctober 16, 2005
Alka-Seltzer is great for when that meal isnt quite sitting right. It turns outthat it's also great for when you're bored. While its not as impressive as thebig bangs, this makes a great demo for kids and adults alike.

Inside Hydroelectric DamsAugust 28, 2005
After receiving a question about hydroelectric power, the Mad Physicistsactually canoed into a Dam to take pictures and data. The dam is closed off tothe public, so the mad men went on a 8 mile adventure.

The Chemistry of Cookie DoughJune 06, 2005
We bought some tasty dough and covered it with silver nitrate! You maycall it a waste; we call it science. This lab demonstrates how you can findthe salt content in cookies by comparing it to the concentration of Cl(as found with a silver nitrate test).
