The ‘Workshop de Lyon’ musicians reply to all the friends in faraway places that they have met while touring or in their private lives as musicians: a personalised musical letter in a language adapted to the original source of the meeting. A new repertoire and a new album, the Workshop is one of the not-to-be-missed Arfi groups for 2015!

During the Renaissance, the musical repertory, open to improvisation, was subject to a diverse range of reinventions. ArFolia Libra follows in the footsteps of this musical freedom and takes on one of the most famous themes in the history of music, the Folia, which has been passed down through the ages and the conti-nents. A theme which the musicians will develop through several sequences of variations, from the most courteous to the least reverent, a novel series of proposi-tions and appropriations of a music which is waiting to be conquered anew.

Gibert (clarinet), V. Mantsoe (dance), J. Puech (Auvergne bagpipes, vocals), C. Rollet (drums), A. Ricros (recital, vocals). Coproduction with Auvergne Imaginée.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The musicians of ‘Auvergne Imaginée’ and of Arfi use the style and codes of the ‘bour-rée traditionnelle’ as the source material for an inventive music. Vincent Mantsoe, a South-African dancer living in Auvergne, follows a similar path, integrating contem-porary choreography with the traditions and rituals handed-down by his family. Rich with his own culture he is naturally at home with these musicians, not by dan-cing ‘la bourrée’, but by translating into his own gestural language with an incredible energy the essence and spirit of the dance.

Avril l’enchanteur Enchanting AvrilVideo-concert around the outsider art of Armand Avril.C. Gibert (sax, clarinet), M. Boiton & C. Rollet (drums), J. Lopez (video and sound traitment, percs)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Creation dec. 2014 / on tour in 2015.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *«Armand Avril is a great multi-facetted artist. I would like to pay my own tribute to the man, an enchanting uncle, and his universe… with a mu-sical and video creation, a percussive and amused dialogue with his work». M. Boiton

The music will be composed in relation to Avril’s works, creating correspondence rather than illustration : there will be imaginary melodies, rhythmic collages and the acoustic results of working on the density of the sonic instrumental material responding to the pulsating paintings. The video work will of course be a presentation of some of the more emblematic of the painter’s works and the extraordinary vitality of his art.

The images will provide the narrative to the show and offer the public the opportunity to engage ‘dialogue’ with the artist.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * Les Incendiares (the Arsonists), the first ARFI trio to consist uniquely of new members of the collective, was formed under the initiative of Alain Gibert.

The magical intrumentarium pre-viously invented by the Apollo trio (A. Gibert, J-P Autin, J-L Cappozzo) made them want to develop their own vision today. G. Grenard, O. Bost and E. Va-gnon first got together in 2013 for the creation of the cine-concert «M. Méliès & Géo Smile» (with J. Lopez and D. Grange). From this shared experience came an urgent desire to play together again in 2015, this time in a purely musical setting....

Max, at the service of the GOHD (Great Organiser of the Dreams of Humanity)... Following their initial meeting in 2013 for the show WANG-FO, Arfi musicians get back together with the ‘Cie. des Anges’ (An-gels Company) for the creation of a com-pletely hybrid show, somewhere between a concert and a puppet theatre.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * After the success of the Bobines Mélodies (Melody Reels), with over 150 shows since its creation in 2006, the trio continues the cine-concert adventure, creating a rich and varied programme for the magnificent film ‘The Old Man and The Sea’, the centrepiece of the show.

The programme includes: ‘Masks’ (J. Boul-bès, Lardux films), ‘Mister Cok’ (F. Dion, Papy 3D), ‘Insomnia’ (V. Lescov, RijaFilms/ Latvia), ‘Destiny’ (ESIA Bellecour 3D), ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ (A. Petrov, studios P. Blais/Québec), ... as well as some ‘musical fiction’, created live by the musicians.

Rediscover a forgotten craftsman of the fabulous adventure of cinematography… Rediscover the little gems filmed by the Spanish director Segundo de Chomón. The soundtrack is created live by our two mu-sicians who are both minstrels and singers.

The phantasmagorical films of Segundo de Chomón lend themselves perfectly to the creation of a fresh, joyful and unbridled new soundtrack. This cine-concert is aimed at a broad au-dience (from age 5 upwards). Children can also be invited to participate, singing along with the musicians on four songs in the show.

Les hommes,maintenant ! Men, now !Staged concert. A new creation by La Marmite Infernale (ARFI’s big orchestra) with the complicity of the director Jean-Paul Delore, Cie LZD.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 4, 5, 6 nov. 2015 - Théâtre de la Renaissance, Oullins (69). Coproduction Arfi / Théâtre de la Renaissance.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In 1997 the Lézard Dramatique theatre company took la Mar-mite Infernale on an exceptional adventure. Under the keen, funny, caring and totally musical eye of director Jean-Paul Delore the show ‘Les Hommes’ (Men) was born.

In 2015, over 20 years later, the musicians of la Marmite Infernale launched their own venture to create a musical theatre show. This time, they swept the director into the joyful whirlwind of energy, personalities and colours which make up the ARFI today. They are convinced that, now, with a team half younger and half older, and with the benefit of the experience gained, he will know how to interrogate this tribe of ‘one-man-bandsmen’ again. And reinvent with them a completely new show !

Arfi is a collective which has always defended musical freedom, imagined by musicians, who, in the great majority, had received no formal musical education and whose artistic develop-ment was often outside the commonly held aesthetic canons. Our aim in this project is to provoke a surprising and unexpected listening experience, through a musical practice which recalls that of the beginner, excluding any-thing which is dictated by virtuosity or habit. The aim is to manipulate sound, nothing more. The strength comes from the way of imagining the music together.
