Douglas County and thesurrounding area has alot to offer with its
plentiful lakes and aboundingrecreational opportunities.
The first settlements were establishedhere in 1858, the same year Minnesotabecame a state. The area was a wilder-ness of woods, prairies and lakes, andwas home to Sioux and Chippewa Indiantribes. Archeologists date the earliestbones and artifacts found in area Indianburial sites as being pre-Christ.
The Red River Trail, used by early pio-neers and wagon trains, passed throughthe area northwest to Fort Abercrombiein North Dakota. In the summer of 1858,brothers Alexander and William Kinkeadestablished a settlement along the shoreof Lake Agnes, built a log cabin andhotel, and named the area “Alexandria.”
A mail route was set up between St.Cloud and Fort Abercrombie, and gov-ernment troops cut a road from FortSnelling to Abercrombie, which allowedfor a stage line and increasing numbersof new settlers. In 1862, news arrivedthat Sioux Indians were forming war par-ties. Many settlers headed east to safety, while others combined forces to defendtheir property. The uprising proved toopowerful, however, and the settlementswere eventually abandoned.
Months later, after the uprising settleddown, settlers began trickling back intothe county and soldiers arrived to build astockade for protection in Alexandria.Treaties were later signed with theSioux, and by 1866 things had calmedenough for the soldiers to leave. Thatsame year, Douglas County’s boundarieswere officially set. The county wasnamed for Senator Steven A. Douglas, astatesman and leader in the Democraticparty who helped with its establishment.
A government land office wasset up in Alexandria, and with the signingof the Homestead Act by PresidentLincoln, a surge of European immigrantscame. Civil War veterans joined thethrong, and within seven years almost allthe tillable land was claimed. In 1878,the railroad was connected fromMelrose to Alexandria, and by the nextyear to Brandon and Evansville. Severalcities in the county were started alongthe steam locomotive lifeline, includingNelson, Garfield and Brandon. Eventuallythe Soo Line railroad crossed the county, and more towns, including Kensington,Forada, Carlos and Miltona popped up.
The new rail line allowed tourists andsportsmen easy access to the area, andthe wealth of fish and game soon madethe area a popular vacation spot.

Downtown
Formed in 1967, the Alexandria Downtown Merchants Association(DMA) strives to enhance, beautify, and promote the diversity of thecity’s thriving downtown shopping and business district while pro-tecting and preserving its historical past.
Rich in history since the late 1800s, downtown Alexandria encom-passes 3rd through 8th Avenues on Broadway and is a popularshopping destination for antiques, unique boutiques, gift shops, eateries, museums and theater.
In addition, DMA organizes projects and events that take placedowntown, and takes care of beautification projects, such as thepurchase and maintenance of the colorful flower baskets that hangalong the streets in the summertime and the “Historic DowntownAlexandria” banners that were put up a couple of years ago. Withthe DMA’s support, garbage receptacles and more benches wereadded to the downtown to accommodate shoppers.
There’s more to downtown Alexandriathan storefronts. There’s history, a senseof pride and merchants who are dedicat-
ed to making visits so memorable you’ll want tocome back.

AlexandriaAlexandria’s population of 12,466 swells in the summermonths due to the large amount of tourism in the area. Thecity is located just a couple of hours northwest of the TwinCities on I-94. The site of the 1858 settlement was estab-lished by William and Alexander Kinkead (for whom the citywas named). An army fort was built in 1862 after an Indianuprising, and afterward growth was steady in the town. Douglas, for whomDouglas County was named. The town was incorporated in1881.
CarlosCarlos, population 502, is located about nine miles north ofAlexandria on State Highway 29. The city began to form in1867 just after the Indian uprising. EvansvilleEvansville, population 612, is located about 20 miles west ofAlexandria on County Road 82. New Testament Christian School2505 Hwy. 29 North, Alexandria, MN 56308(320) 763-4050 Website: newtestamentchristianschool.orgPrincipal/Administrator: Leslie Shjerve
New Testament is dedicated to providing the best possible education to students in allthree areas of their being: physical, mental and spiritual. A family's influence on a child'sspiritual growth is the mainstay of the child's relationship with Christ. The staff encour-ages and supplements that relationship. If a child comes with a concern or need, wepray for that child before and after school, or in a classroom setting. The Bible says,"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart fromit." We are excited to be a part of that training.
