The first settlements herewere established in1858, the same year
Minnesota became a state.
The area was a wilderness of woods, prairies and lakes, and was home to Siouxand Chippewa Indians. Archeologists datethe earliest bones and artifacts found inarea burial sites as being pre-Christ.
The Red River Trail, used by early pioneersand wagon trains, passed through thearea to Fort Abercrombie in NorthDakota. In the summer of 1858, brothersAlexander and William Kinkead estab-lished a settlement along the shore ofLake Agnes, built a log cabin and hotel, and named the area “Alexandria.”
A mail route was set up between St.Cloud and Fort Abercrombie, and govern-ment troops cut a road from Fort Snellingto Abercrombie, which allowed for a stageline and increasing numbers of new set-
tlers. In 1862, news arrived that theSioux were forming war parties. Many settlers headed east to safety, while others combined forces todefend their property. The uprisingwas too powerful, however, and thesettlements were abandoned.
Months later the uprising settleddown. Settlers returned to thecounty and soldiers arrived to builda stockade in Alexandria for pro-tection. Treaties were later signedwith the Sioux, and by 1866 things hadcalmed and the soldiers left. That sameyear, Douglas County’s boundaries wereofficially set. The county was named forSenator Steven Douglas, a statesman andleader in the Democratic Party whohelped with its establishment.
A government land office was set up inAlexandria. With the signing of theHomestead Act by President Lincoln, asurge of European immigrants and CivilWar veterans came. Within seven yearsalmost all tillable land was claimed.
In 1878, the railroad wasconnected from Melrose to Alexandria, and the next year to Brandon andEvansville. Several cities in the countywere started along the steam locomotivelifeline, including Nelson and Garfield.Eventually the Soo Line crossed the coun-ty and more towns, including Kensington,Forada, Carlos and Miltona, popped up.The new rail line allowed tourists andsportsmen easy access to the area, andthe wealth of fish and game made thearea a popular vacation spot.

AlexandriaAlexandria’s population of 12,466 swells in the summer monthsdue to the large amount of tourism in the area. The city is locat-ed just a couple of hours northwest of the Twin Cities on I-94.The site of the 1858 settlement was established by William andAlexander Kinkead (for whom the city was named). An army fortwas built in 1862 after an Indian uprising, and afterward, growthwas steady in the town. The village of Alexandria was incorpo-rated in 1877, and the first passenger train reached the settle-ment in 1878. The village became an official city in 1909.
BrandonBrandon, population 489, is located about 15 mileswest of Alexandria on County Road82. The village, which was an earlystagecoach stop, was originallycalled “Chippewa” and was locatednorth of the current townsite. Whenthe railroad was built through thearea in 1879, the town re-formedalongside the tracks and was namedafter Brandon, Vermont, the birth-place of Stephen A. Douglas, forwhom Douglas County was named. The town was incorporated in 1881.
CarlosCarlos, population 502, is located about nine miles north ofAlexandria on State Highway 29. The city began to form in 1867just after the Indian uprising. When the railroad was built in1903, an area near the tracks was chosen as the official town-site. It was named after nearby Lake Carlos. The town was incor-porated July 7, 1904.
EvansvilleEvansville, population 612, is located about 20 miles west ofAlexandria on County Road 82. The village was platted in the fallof 1879, with the coming of the first railway train, and was
incorporated in 1881. The village was namedfor the county’s first mail carrier, Evans, whocarried mail on foot from Alexandria to FortAbercrombie.
ForadaForada, population 185, is eight miles southof Alexandria on State Highway 29 and easton County Road 4. The railway village wasplatted in July 1903 by Cyrus A. Campbell andincorporated April 6, 1905. It was named forCampbell’s wife, Ada. Because there alreadywas a city in Minnesota named Ada, hechanged it to Forada (For Ada).

GarfieldGarfield, population 354, is located about seven miles west ofAlexandria on County Road 82. The railway village was plattedFebruary 17, 1882 and incorporated September 9, 1905. Thecity was named in honor of President Garfield, who was shot andkilled by an assassin just prior to the official naming of the rail-road town.
KensingtonKensington, population 292, is located 16 miles west ofAlexandria on State Highway 27 and south on County Road 1.This railway village in Solem Township was platted by theHonorable William D. Washburn in 1887 and incorporated June6, 1891. A railroad conductor with roots in England created alarge garden that he named “Kensington Gardens” (an area westof London near Westminster is known as “Kensington Palace.”)The area became a town, and the name was shortened toKensington.
MillervilleMillerville, population 106, is located about 20 miles northwestof Alexandria on County Road 82 and north on County Road 7.Millerville was established as a township in 1867 and was namedfor a prominent German settler, John Miller, who lived in thearea.
MiltonaMiltona, population 424, is located 14 miles north of Alexandriaon State Highway 29 and east on County Road 14. Miltona wasnamed for Lake Miltona, which had been named for Mrs.Florence Miltona Roadruck, who lived in the area.
NelsonNelson, population 187, is located about four miles east ofAlexandria on State Highway 27. The city formed after the rail-road was built through the area in 1875 and was incorporated in1905. The city was named in honor of Senator Knute Nelson. The city was first called “Dent” in honor of an early settler.
OsakisOsakis, population 1,740, is located about nine miles east ofAlexandria on State Highway 27. The city was founded in 1866and incorporated in 1881. The first passenger train arrived in1878. The city of Osakis was named after the lake it borders. Thelake’s name was most likely derived from “Oh-za-kees,” theOjibwe Indian name for the lake. “Oh-za-kees” means “place ofthe Sauk” and refers to the Sauk Indians who roamed the areafor a short time.

Unincorporated Douglas County communities:
Belle RiverBelle River is 11 miles northeast of Alexandria. RiverdaleTownship, named for the Long Prairie River, was established in1870. The name was changed to Belle River Township. The St.Nicholas Catholic Church was built in 1871, and a small settle-ment developed west of the church that became known as BelleRiver. The church burned in 1915, but in 1916, a new church wascompleted, serving as the center of the community to this day.
Holmes CityHolmes City is about seven miles southwest of Alexandria. Thefirst settler in the area may have been a trapper/trader namedLewis, who had an Indian trading station in Moe Township. In1858, three men purchased the trading post and moved it to thecurrent site of Holmes City. Holmes City Township was estab-lished in 1866 and named after one of the men, Thomas Holmesof Pennsylvania. It was the third township formed in the county.
Leaf ValleyLeaf Valley is located 15 miles northwest of Alexandria in LeafValley Township. The township was established in 1867. Thename refers to its location just south of the Leaf Hills, also calledthe Leaf Mountains, in nearby Otter Tail County. The villageformed at a crossroads and at one time included a town hall, general store, feed mill and a large co-op creamery.
MelbyMelby is 25 miles northwest of Alexandria in Lund Township. Thefirst settlement was known as Melby Station and was located oneither side of the Great Northern Railroad track and by 1889was a flourishing community. Due to the dangers of the curvingterrain and dangerous railroad crossings, the express office latermoved just under a mile west. The businesses and residents soonfollowed, and Melby formed at that location.
Rose CityRose City is 18 miles northeast of Alexandria in Spruce HillTownship. The township was organized in 1875. The communi-ty was named after the Rose Creamery, but there are conflictingstories as to how the creamery was named. Some say it was forfamilies in the area with similar names, others believe it was forthe wild roses that grew in the area. At one time, the settlementhad several businesses, but the population never did take off.
Spruce CenterSpruce Center is 15 miles northeast of Alexandria in Spruce HillTownship. In 1869, a man named Gordon built a dam on SpruceCreek and started a saw mill. Spruce Hill Village quickly grewaround it and by the mid-1880s, it was booming. Later, theMerickel Brothers built a larger dam and mill nearby and startedSpruce Center. Spruce Hill Township was organized in 1875. Yearslater, the Spruce Hill dam went out. It was never replaced andthat village slowly died. Today it is an historic county park.

The bones of the new Alexandria Area
High School are taking shape.
Load-bearing walls, steel beams, foot-
ings and more are being set in place as
light poles are sprouting from the ground.
Since last summer’s groundbreaking,
construction crews buzzed around the
site doing what they could before winter,
and during the winter months they’ve
moved in large-scale parts for the super-
structure, things like 70-foot steel beams
and precast panels.
It’s all in preparation for a busy 18-
months before the school is scheduled to
open in the fall of 2014.
On Monday, Jason Rentmeester, project
manager with Kraus-Anderson Construc-
tion Company, updated Alexandria School
Board members on the progress.
Rentmeester said, as of last week, the
project is about 25 percent complete and
on-schedule.
SCOPE OF PROJECT
Approximately 1,400 students in grades
9-12 will attend the new high school, lo-
cated at 50th Avenue and Pioneer Road in
Alexandria.

D ouglas County’s reputation as a leaderin the packaging manufacturing indus-try is shining brighter than ever.Enterprise Minnesota magazine named thecounty as one of “Five Great Places to be a Manu-facturer in Minnesota.”The five communities were saluted for takingextra measures to ensure the continued success oftheir local manufacturers, “and in turn, theirschools, families and economies.”“I think it’s a great honor,” Jason Murray, execu-tive director of the Alexandria Area Economic De-velopment Commission, told the Echo Press. “Itspeaks to the strength of our manufacturing baseand specifically, the machine packaging sector thatwe have here and the jobs they create.”Murray listed three factors that have builtAlexandria’s manufacturing base over the years –an innovative environment, local entrepreneurswho have grown their companies and a technicalcollege that has focused on local manufacturingand adding jobs all the way back to its roots in theearly 1960s.The story, “Alexandria:Packing Progress,” waspublished in the January2013 issue of EnterpriseMinnesota. It notes thatmanufacturing makes up16.6 percent of local em-ployment opportunitiesin Douglas County.

Formed in 1967, the Alexandria Downtown MerchantsAssociation (DMA) strives to enhance, beautify and promotethe diversity of the city’s thriving downtown shopping andbusiness district while protecting and preserving its historicalpast.
Rich in history since the late 1800s, downtown Alexandriaencompasses 3rd through 8th Avenues on Broadway and is apopular shopping destination for antiques, unique boutiques, gift shops, eateries, museums and theater.
In addition, DMA organizes projects and events that take placedowntown, and takes care of beautification projects, such asthe purchase and maintenance of the colorful flower basketsthat hang along the streets in the summertime and the“Historic Downtown Alexandria” banners. With the DMA’s sup-port, garbage receptacles and more benches were added tothe downtown to accommodate shoppers.
There’s more to downtown Alexandria thanstorefronts. There’s history, a sense of prideand merchants who are dedicated to making visits so memorable you’ll want to come back.
