John Phelps shows a respirator he uses in his shop. It’s lightweight and doesn’t fog his glasses. He also showed his new

Festool Track Saw. Troy Gallier shows his Lufkin folding wood ruler. It has a sliding brass rod to make depth measurements.

Show & Tells

Jerry Shivers shows some test panels he made that used “knock down” assembly joiners.

Steve Brady shows a series of cutting boards he recently made for gifts.

Mark Underwood shows an Arizona Mesquite bowl he turned. It had a hole in the bottom where a limb used to grow.

Terry Turney shows a walnut and maple box with a veneered top that won’t stay flat.

Rob Emanuel shows pictures of his recently finished eagle intarsia he made for his father.

Richard Hicks shows a “seam presser” he made from Dymondwood. It’s used when sewing seams on quilts.

Carolyn Williams showed a picture of a redwood display unit she recently built for McCoy’s. They are using it to display various ways to use redwood when making outdoor furniture and decks.

Steve Brady won the door prize, $35 since he had a show & tell item. Troy Gallier and Sam Haviland won the Craft Supplies gift certificates.

Program Steve Brady led a discussion about the design and construction of our club table. He also described the kiln he built for his sawmill

business. He used his kiln to dry, stabilize and sterilize the wood Jeffery Fritz donated for our club table. Steve’s kiln is a large, well insulated building

that uses a computer to control the necessary dehumidifier, heater, fans and vents needed to dry the wood from

his sawmill. It can dry as much as 5,000 board feet of lumber in one load. The lumber is loaded on a special skid with sticks between each layer of lumber.

Steve tests the lumber each day to be sure it

is drying properly. He weighs sample blocks to measure the moisture loss. If the wood dries too fast, it will be case hardened and can have internal cracks and voids. He also uses an electronic moisture meter that

measures the percentage of moisture in the wood. Heating the wood to dry it also kills

any bugs in the wood. This is a picture of the wood for the table taken after Steve dried it.

Steve opened the floor for suggestions about the design and construction of the club table.

After a lengthy discussion, the group decided that a committee should meet and come up with a design. Troy Gallier, Terry Turney and Steve Brady volunteered for the committee. The group also picked Saturday, February 7th as the first group workday to get the wood ready to build the table. The committee met and decided that the

Craftsman Style table in Woodsmith Issue 179 would meet the needs of the club. Woodsmith plans are very

detailed and the construction of this table will cover a wide range of woodworking skills and use about every woodworking tool. Troy also has a recording of an episode of Woodsmith Shop where they actually built the table. Eight members met on February 7th to start the table. After the group viewed the video, they started working to get the wood ready. After measuring the available wood against the dimensions of the table, the group decided that we didn’t have enough of the right size wood to complete the table. Richard mentioned that he had enough red oak to build the table and the group decided to use it. We’ll use the wood donated by Jeffery for a smaller table for the video projector. The programs for the next several meetings will focus on the various aspects of building the table. We also plan to have Saturday work meetings where club members will actually build the table. We’ll video parts of those meetings and review the work progress at each regular meeting.

Safety Focus We plan to have a short “Safety Focus” at each meeting. This month we focused on eye protection. Mark Underwood brought a collection of safety glasses, goggles and face shields he uses in his shop. He stressed that you should verify that the eye protection you are using meets the latest ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2010 standard. Those items should be clearly marked as being “Z87 compliant”. There are a lot of so called safety glasses available that do not meet the standard. They offer only minimal protection and may pose an additional hazard by shattering from an impact. Mark also reminded us that eye protection only works if you wear it – being in your pocket doesn’t count!

Toy Project The charities that received the toys were very impressed with the quality and assortment of the toys we supplied this year. They especially liked the stick horses and the toys for girls like the ironing boards and cradles. They said our toys really made a difference to the children and families that received them. They say that they are “so much better than the plastic toys from the stores” and the parents are thankful that they don’t require batteries. The club has a good supply of wheels, axles and patterns for this year’s effort. We plan to have several Saturday work meetings dedicated to making toys. We’ll announce the dates later this year. If you would like to make toys on your own, contact Richard Hicks, Sam Tobey or Red Dressel for plans and supplies.

ShopNotes August Home Publishing announced that after 23 years and 138 issues, it will no longer publish its ShopNotes magazine. They cite rising publishing costs as the major reason. The ShopNotes magazine grew out of the section in their sister publication, Woodsmith, that dealt with jigs, tools, shop storage solutions and woodworking techniques. They also tested new tools and designed shop built tools. Our club library has an extensive collection of back issues of the magazine and a DVD electronic copy of back issues 1 through 120. If you have questions or are a current subscriber to ShopNotes, you can contact August Home Publishers at online at: www.ShopNotesCustomerService.com or by phone at: 1-800-333-5854 for more information about your subscription.
