City Hall hours:MondayThursday

8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Recycling Center hours:

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, past fireinvestigations have determined that gas service to somebuildings have been damaged due to heavy snow loadsand snow sliding off of roofs onto gas meters andcomponents. Also, snow sliding off roofs onto outside oiltanks has caused valves and filters to be broken off. TheState Fire Marshal urges all citizens to do the following:

Clear roofs of excessive snow and ice buildup, beingcareful not to damage gas and oil service to thebuilding. Clearing the roof can be dangerous andshould be left to professionals. Using a roof rake isrecommended while keeping away from electricallines.Keep all chimneys and vents clear to prevent carbonmonoxide from backing up into the building. Somevents, such as pellet stove vents, may exit thebuilding through a wall and are susceptible to beingblocked by excessive snow buildup on the outside ofthe building.Keep all exits clear of snow, so that occupants canescape quickly if a fire, or other emergency, shouldoccur. Keep in mind that windows should be clearedto allow a secondary means of escape in case theprimary means of escape is blocked by fire. Keepingexits clear also allows emergency workers to accessyour building.

For more information about fire and building safety, callDover Fire and Rescue at 5166169.

Come to a 'SkyWatch' at the DoverLibrary Feb. 17

Bundle up for the cold weather and come to the DoverPublic Library on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. toparticipate in a "SkyWatch", under the tutelage of the NewHampshire Astronomical Society. We'll start out inside witha brief (about 20 minutes) informational session and slideshow on "What's up in Tonight's Sky". Then we'll moveoutside to set up telescopes and do some stargazing!

What happens at a"SkyWatch"? It's simply agathering of amateurastronomers with a focus onpublic outreach andeducation. It is "beginnerfriendly." NHAS memberswill set up their equipmentand choose their celestialtargets. The equipment(telescopes and binoculars)is the property of themember and will be carefullyaligned and focused for you on an interesting celestialtarget. Your observer will explain what you will be seeing. Many celestial objects, while beautiful, are quite dim and itmay take some time before you begin to see all the detail.Atmospheric turbulence may also come and go, so you maysuddenly experience moments when the view isspectacularly better watch for them! This is your specialtime at the telescope so we encourage you to make themost of it. Do ask any questions that come to mind, and ifyou don't see anything please say "I don't see anything!"since objects do sometimes drift out of view.

It's important to stay warm! Bring about twice as muchwarm clothing as you think you 'll need. Winter calls forinsulated boots, thermal underwear, corduroy jeans, parka, flannel shirt, gloves, and, very important, a warm knit cap.Participants may bring their own telescopes if they desire, but the Library's telescopes, as well as Society members'telescopes, will be available to use. In the event of a cloudynight, the informational slide show will still take place at6:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to attend. This programis free and open to the public.
