Y’all know what time it is? It’s Fair time. Lots of canning and pie baking. Lots of flower picking and craft making.

I LOVE THE FAIR!

Each year the boys and I gathers our project(s) we’ve worked on throughout the year and take it down to our county fair to be la-beled and judged. Sometimes we bring home a pretty satin ribbon and sometimes we don’t. But each and every fair, we enter anyway, because it’s a tradition.

I’d like to invite each and every one of our readers to enter some-thing in your local county fair - maybe even the State Fair! It can be your new tradition!

Halloween Costumes and Dress-up Gear - all hand made by a 4 year old and his mom.

Meet Wyatt, pictured left., wearing one of his creactions: darth maul mask and holding a darth maul lightsabe. His mom started being a vendor at Pop Up Sunday about 5 or 6 months ago, which is a great community event in Raleigh. The event of-fers a “indie kid’s” tent where kids can get a table for $5 and sell their wares. When Wyatt’s mom - Meredith Cantrell of Lucy 2s -- a local artisan who recylces old prom dresses, t-shirts and other clothing to cre-ate beautifu; bags and accessories -- told him about the event, he got super excited. He instantly decided that he wanted to make something out of “trash”(his words). It took him a couple of months to come up with a solid idea but he started out wanting to make knight helmets and king crowns. He has to pay for the booth fee himself and for a portion of the supplies he needs. He decides what we make and how many of each thing get made and on the pricing of each item. He also picks out supplies. I even sat down with him and did all the math to show him how much it costs to make each item. Out of the money he makes, he and his mom agree that half the money is to be used for college and the other half can be used on what he wants. “Which right now is to save up for a $250 lego set.... we might be making a lot of star wars gear to get up to that”, his mom said with a laugh.

Where to Find? Currently, you can onlly find Wyatts costumes and dress-up gear at Pop up Sunday (which is every fourth Sunday). However, if you contact Wyantt’s mom at lucy2s, you may do so by clicking over to

Prices range from $1 to $10.

Tips on Maintaining Your Grill

To keep your grill in tip-top

shape, follow these tips.

Tip 1Since most grills are left ex-posed to the great outdoors, you should always cover your grill. Grill covers are available in all shapes and sizes.

Tip 2If your grill sits on pavement, place a tarp or a grill matt underneath it to catch debris, grease and food.

Tip 3Replacing your grill parts is im-portant. And many manufactur-ers come with a lifetime guar-antee on certain parts. Save your book and any warranty information.

Tip 4Give your grill a thorough cleaning every five to 10 uses.

Tip 5Clean the venturi tubes. Ventu-ries are the tubes that mix air and gas and feed to the burn-ers. They need to be clear to work properly. The tubes make good homes for spiders and

insects during the off-season. Even a small blockage can become a fire hazard. Re-move the entire burner/tube assembly and clean with soapy water. Clean the holes with a wire brush, paper clip or toothpick. Replace when dry.

Tip 6Never place a grill in a garage, breezeway, carport or under any surface that is flammable. Keep your grill at least 10 feet from the house.

Tip 7When storing LP containers, always store upright in a se-cure position. And never store them in your car.

page 15

Page 16: Down Home Magazine Sept oct 2014

Semi-Annual CleaningSeveral times throughout the year, it’s smart to dismantle your grill and give it an extensive cleaning. If you have a gas grill, disconnect the propane tank be-fore beginning the process. Then, soak the grates in soapy water and scrub. If the racks are especially dirty, you can use a steel wool pad. After cleaning your grill, turn it on and let it cook for 10 minutes. This will allow any residual cleaning supplies to burn off.

It’s also a good idea to check the chas-sis for rust. Rust easily comes off with a stiff wire brush or a steel wool pad. The joints, connectors and fasteners should also be inspected to ensure they aren’t corroding. And re-tightening fasteners, replacing grill appendages (wheels, knobs and handles) and checking hinges is a good idea.

Polishing Your GrillTo polish your grill, sprinkle some baking soda on a sponge and clean off all exterior surfaces. Aluminum foil gen-tly rubbed along your grill can help remove grime and buildup. If you notice any missing paint, grill-safe paint is a good option.

This shy country boy was born and raised in Layton Utah. But, now lives in Hubert, North Caro-lina with his wife Heidi and his step daughter’s Courtney and Darcey who he adores. Travis also has two children who reside in Utah. Corbin, who is 20, is currently working full time and Corynn, 19, is in college.

Moving to North Carolina was a huge move for the family. Travis says that one thing he doesn’t think he’ll never get used to is the humidity, coming from a very dry climate. “I don’t know how people do it here, It took me a long while to get used to not showering twice a day, and I still sometimes do”, laughs Travis. “The people here are great and we have made a lot of amazing friends, and living next to Camp Lejuene - one of the largest military bases in the world - has allowed us to meet a lot of great people from all over.”, Travis says.

Travis and Heidi run a horse boarding operation on their 15 acre ranch which is called The Sandy Creek Ranch. Heidi runs the day to day operations and Travis is the one out fixing fences and cleaning stalls when he is home from on the road. “The ranch would not function without

her and I would probably just wander around lost if it weren’t for her, she is definitely the brains of the operation”, Travis laughs. “I could never live in the city. I find it very relaxing and especially rewarding to work on the ranch, whether its just fixing a fence or building a barn. Besides most of the things I like to do I could not attempt to do living in a suburb, like campfire cooking, sitting out at the barn playing my guitar writing a song or just singing to anyone who will listen, most of the time its the dog.”, Travis admits.

Travis started performing at the age of 5 with his sister as his dance partner and performing solo acts, he was tearing up the stage and soaking up all the attention and applause. “I was so nervous, I remember it well, standing alone on that stage for the first time behind a black cur-tain in my little John Travolta outfit and my knees shaking like crazy. But when that curtain opened and my head came up and with the old John Travolta signature move pointing my finger and moving it across the crowd it was like something changed in me”, Travis say’s. He is still that shy guy, but has moved on to become the artist he is today - having played in front of thousands in countless

Page 22: Down Home Magazine Sept oct 2014

venues in three contries and sharing his music with people all around the world.

With the influence of his father, Ron, and his favorite singer and mentor Chris Ledouxe, Travis has held on to his country roots. “I have a lot of great memories growing up living on a ranch and rodeo’n with my buddies and living the music and way of life I love singing about”, says Travis. With his love and respect for ro-deo and the life of a rodeo cow-boy and rancher Travis knows all to well of the music he sings and lives. “I am really excited about this new cd, it has been a lot of work so far to get it to this point, but has been very rewarding”, says Travis. “This cd has been years in the making and I have met a lot of great and very tal-ented people. I was very excited to get “Hobo” Jim Varsos to pro-duce the cd, he was awesome to work with. Also Russell Smith from the amazing rhythm aces who sang all the background vocals on the cd. I was very fortunate to come by a song written by Garth Brooks when he had first got into Nashville but did not record the song, so the publishing company asked me if I would like to record it, and the song ended up being a great addition to the cd. It

was a great experience writ-ing with the guys from Dream works in Nashville, I learned so much from them. It was very humbling being around and on stage with so many great artists while i was there. Their are so many people trying to make it there and a lot of them are very good”, Travis recalls.

Travis has brought a style to country western that is truly his own. He has not forgotten his country roots on this cd but has definitely taken it to another level. Loaded with western swingin rocken driven country, with a lot of classic traditional influence thrown in. Also some rodeo thrills and even a few chills, and cant forget the spit and the blood and the beer. Recorded by some of the best players Nashville has to offer. If you like country western music and you are a cowboy or just a cowboy at heart, this cd is a must own for you.

“People ask me why I don’t sing the mainstream country stuff, because that’s where the money is...I just smile and say because this is where my heart is..”

Travis Nelson.

Page 25: Down Home Magazine Sept oct 2014

Travis has certainly got a lot on his plate with his new self titled cd that has just been released and also has two songs that he has written for the military. One of witch is called America’s Girl witch Travis started a non profit web based organization for called americasgirl.org that is a project still in the works. Travis wrote the song America’s Girl a few years ago and has been playing it at different venues and at a lot of military shows and concerts. I wanted to do something for the women in our country, and make a difference. I decided to go to school a few years back when i originally started the project to learn how to run the organization and received a two year degree. It has been a lot of hard work and countless sleepy hours i have to admit while working on this project Travis say’s, but it is nothing compared to the challenges that the woman in the military go through every day. The mission is simple for America’s Girl, Help Hope and Honor. Through helping the women in our fine country by providing them with information that is easily accessible and by helping provide resources that can make a difference for them throughout their military career. The statement of Purpose is to essentially HELP young women who are looking to join a branch of service in our countries military. It provides factual organized and easily accessible information to help them decide witch branch of service fits them is the best. America’s Girl also provides HOPE to our service women and those who wish to volunteer and recognize the importance of helping even commemorating the women who so proudly serve our country with HONOR.

The majority of our women soldiers out there will come home to find bills unpaid, possibly raising a child on there own without a husband or working in the United States for our country raising children while their husband or boyfriend is off to war. It feels great to see these girls faces when they hear the song and they know how much an organization like America’s Girl can help. Man I love it! I just can’t get enough! I am so proud of these girl’s and to see their determination it is very inspiring, Travis goes on to say. May God bring them all home safe. Travis is currently looking for the right person and or people to help get America’s Girl off the ground.

Begin by melting the chocolate chips in the microwave at 15 second intervals. Stir between each heating until the choco-late is completely melted. It usually take one minute, but you have to do it in intervals or the chocolate will scorch.

Take one Oreo at a time and drop it into the chocolate, covering all sides. I used a fork to lift the Oreo out of the chocolate, letting the extra drip off. Set each chocolate covered Oreo on a sheet of wax paper.

While Chocolate is still hot, add eyes.

Close by - Wayne County

Page 34: Down Home Magazine Sept oct 2014

How many times do we overlook great things right here in our “back yard”? We travel long distances out-of-state and try to take in everything while we’re on vacation, but how about what’s right here…local stuff…things close by?

A couple of years ago, I took a trip with the folks at the Foundation of Wayne Community College that followed the path Union General John G. Foster took from New Bern to Goldsboro in what is known as “Foster’s Raid” that occurred in 1862. General Foster’s goal was to destroy the bridge over the Neuse River south of Goldsboro in order to disrupt the Confederate supply line coming up the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad from the port at Wilmington.

Along the way, Foster encountered Confederate defenders at several places including Southwest Creek, Kinston, and White Hall (now known as Seven Springs). The Union raiders reached the railroad on December 17, 1862 and began to do battle with Confederate forces commanded by General Thomas Clingman. The 2,000 Confederates were no match to the 10,000+ Union raiders and were pushed back west of the rail-road and north of the Neuse.

Foster was able to destroy the bridge as well as a few miles of tracks southward before his withdrawal back to New Bern. Meantime, additional Confederate

forces under the command of General Nathan Evans arrived, and the Confeder-ates attacked the rear of the withdrawing Union forces. The noise prompted Union troops already off the battlefield to return and repel the Confederates. Eventually, darkness squelched the battle, Foster with-drew towards New Bern, and the Battle of Goldsboro Bridge was over.

Today, part of the battlefield is owned by Wayne County and managed by the Goldsborough Bridge Battlefield Associa-tion. The battlefield, located just off US-117 South on Old Mt. Olive Highway, is avail-able for self-guided tours. The railroad is in the same location and still used today, but obviously the bridge has been replaced with a classic steel-truss bridge. Along the tour, you’ll see breastworks troops once used for protection and firing positions. You can also see a camp site and an old barn that’s sometimes used for weddings and other social events. The Association also hosts events including encampments and reenactments. Visit their web page, GoldsboroughBridge.org, for more infor-mation.

Other places close by include Charles B. Aycock Birthplace between Pikeville and Fremont, Old Waynesborough Park on US 117 Bypass in Goldsboro, and the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park off NC 111 several miles south of Goldsboro. There’s a lot of history in several old cemeteries including
