The Coins of Ancient GreeceThe maritime power of Aegina is thought to have issued the first coins in Europe, in about 700BC, with that first type being the Turtle Silver Stater. A largely undistinguished official, Pontius Pilate was almost certainly destined for obscurity. As the Roman Prefect who condemned Jesus Christ to die by crucifixion, however, he guaranteed himself eternal infamy. Ruling Judaea from 26 to 36AD, Pilate authorised the issue of currency, but, some two millennia after he was recalled to Rome, his coins are very rare and highly sought after. A chance to hold Biblical history in your hands, a genuine Bronze Prutah of Pilate is included in this collection!

Rome had ruled Judaea since the fall of the Hasmonaean dynasty – a dynasty which achieved independence under John Hyrcanus, who is also represented in the Coins of the Holy Land Set. In a remarkably good state of preservation, we have secured a small number of genuine 1,700+ year-old terracotta seals – authentic artefacts of the Holy Land with an amazing tale to tell.

In the 3rd century AD, an enormous Holy Land library was destroyed by fire. The library held thousands of papyrus scrolls – each sealed with a piece of terracotta embellished with an image created with a signet ring. The inferno may have destroyed the documents, but the fierce heat actually fired the clay and preserved the seals! But for the fire, these seals would have crumbled to dust many centuries ago.

Distinguished by a portrait on one side, these Ancient uniface seals span approximately 15mm, and represent sensational value-for-money given their quality and antiquity.

The 1938 Crown Proof KNOWN BY PERHAPS 20 EXAMPLES!

The crowning glory of any Australian collection, and a compelling addition to a numismatic portfolio, the Melbourne Mint’s 1938 Crown Proof is extraordinarily rare. Although the official mintage was stated to be 250, the actual number of coins issued by the Mint is thought to be approximately 20!

The Melbourne Mint had been toying with the idea of expanding its Proof coin collector program, but with the storm clouds of war gathering in the 1930s, the production of Proof coinage slowed significantly. As a result, the Mint never got anywhere near the maximum

mintage of 250 coins, and the 1938 Crown Proof is seldom seen on the market. Indeed, there have been perhaps as few as ten offerings of the 1938 Crown

Proof in the last half a century, with this sterling silver Proof offered only twice at Downies Australian Coin Auctions since the country’s oldest numismatic auction house was established in 1963.

The 1937 Crown ProofJUST 100 COINS STRUCK! Struck at the historic Melbourne Mint, the 1937 Crown Proof FDC is unquestionably a rarity of world standing. Desired by many, but available only to the privileged few, the entire mintage of this imposing Australian rarity comprised only 100 coins.

Australia’s largest and highest denomination predecimal coin, with the diameter an imposing 38.5mm, the 1937 Crown was created to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. Along with the standard circulation issue, the Melbourne Mint also struck 100 examples in Proof FDC quality. Although the mintage of 100 is obviously tiny, the number still in existence is much less than that. The number remaining in perfect FDC quality, as presented here, is infinitesimal.

Notable for the exceptional clarity of detail in the designs, the single example of the 1937 Crown Proof FDC we have available is in an absolutely spellbinding state of preservation.
