Logging in to the IBM Mashup Center1. Go to the web address

http://open.kent.gov.uk/mum/enabler

2. In the ‘User ID’ field type your assigned username, and in the ‘Password’ field type your assigned password. Then click on the ‘Log In’ button. (If you need a username and password please contact the project team at [email protected]).

Create a New Page 1. From the home page select the tab which

most closely resembles the type of visualisation you want to create; ‘Geographical’ (e.g mapped data), ‘Charting’ (e.g graphs), or ‘Data’ (e.g lists).

2. Each of these ‘sibling’ tabs may have a number of existing ‘child’ tabs which hold visualisations that have already been created.

3. To create a new page to hold your visualisation, click on the drop down ‘Actions’ tab and select ‘New Child Page’, or use the ‘Click here to create a child page’ link if available .

4. Next give your new page a name that reflects the data sets that you intend to display in the visualisation (e.g ‘My local schools’). Your ‘My local schools’ page should automatically appear.

Finding the data you want

1. Once you have logged and created your new page, you will need to find the data you want to use from the Open Catalog.

2. To do this click on the drop down ‘Actions’ tab, and select ‘Open Catalog in a dialog box’ or ‘Open Catalog as a New Page’.

3. You will now see a list of all existing data sets that can be sorted by ‘Title’, ‘Rating’, ‘Author’ or ‘Date’.

Using the Catalogue to select data

1. Find your data sets by typing keywords into the search box, using the ‘Browse by’ options, or by sorting the catalogue and scrolling through.

2. When you have found the data you want to download, place the cursor over it so it will turn yellow. Make a note of the name of the data set for later.

3. Next click on the ‘Add to’ drop down key and select “Mashup Builder”.

Using the visualisation tools on your page

1. To visualise your data, you will need to use one of the many ‘widgets’ available. There are many combinations but an example should show the process for building a ‘mashup’.

2. For the example of using an Ordnance Survey map widget; click on the ‘Components’ link and type ‘OS map’ into the search engine.

3. When you find it, click on the ‘Add to Page’ icon.

4. The OS map widget will be appear on your page.

Wire your dataset and widget together1. To link your dataset to the OS Map

tool, click on the dataset and then click on the ‘Display menu’ icon on the top right hand corner of the dataset.

2. Next click on ‘Edit wiring…’

3. This will open up a new ‘Wiring’ box. Click on the ‘Send’ tab which has the name of the dataset highlighted in green.

Wire your dataset and widget together4. A list of the content options will appear.

Click on the content you want. Tick the box which has the location data in your dataset (i.e. postcode/lat/long)

5. Next it will ask you which widget/tool you want your dataset to link to. Click on ‘OS Map’ and the Map tool will turn pink.

6. Finally tick the ‘Postcode’ box and click ‘Done’.

Test and Save

1. Your mashup should now be complete.

2. Test it by clicking on one of the fields in the dataset to see if it has worked.

3. Finally click the “Save” icon on the top right hand side of your page for you to save this mashup.

4. Remember that the visualisations you create will be viewed by the public, so try to make them easily readable and unambiguous.

5. For any problems or issues that may arise, there is an escalation process you will have been sent, which can also be found at http://openkent.blogspot.com/
