SeminarLf1 Education Department

Credit System• Each subject is “worth” a certain number of credits. The

credits are collected throughout your years of study. You can achieve up to 60 per year, 300 by the end of dentistry/360 by the end of medicine.

• By the end of the 1st semester you must achieve at least 26 of the 30 possible credit points to progress in to the next semester.

• By the end of the 2nd semester you must achieve 50 of the total 60 possible credit points to progress in to the 2nd year.

• Each following year you must achieve no less than 10 points below the “normal” (i.e. 110 by the end of 2nd year, 170 by the end of 3rd etc)

Page 3: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Eligible Subjects• As well as acquiring points from the compulsory subjects, you must

acquire an extra 15/18 points over your 5/6 years of study.• You do this by taking Eligible Subjects.• Short courses worth between 2 and 4 credit points each.• Some require only attendance, others include a small test.• In 1st year there are several available:

– Complete nutrition in sportsmen– Integrated biology and pathology– New trends in experimental and clinical anatomy– Summer training course– Winter skiing course.

• It is important you email the professor and ask if you can join the class and make sure they fit around your timetable.

• If you fail a compulsory subject, you will have to repeat it until you pass. However, if you don’t have enough credit points you will not be able to repeat the subject and may be told to terminate your studies.

• Taking eligible subjects may give you enough credits to be allowed to repeat.

Page 4: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Test Structure• You must pass tests in each subject in order to collect the credit

points. • Receiving the credits allows you to take the final exam.• For the majority of tests you will have up to 3 attempts to pass.• If you do not pass all of your tests you will be given an extra

chance to pass by sitting a “Credit test” at the end of the semester/year.

• These tests encompass all study material covered throughout the year so it is much better if you pass all of the smaller class tests.

• Once you have attained the credits you can then take the exam.

Page 5: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Exam Structure• Exams are oral. You have up to 3 attempts.• The final exam questions are available online now.• For each subject in 1st year there are around 150 Qs.• The content of the answers is covered in lectures/seminars and by

the recommended textbooks.• You must book your exams online via the SIS (student information

system).• The departments open up several dates (with a limited number of

places per date) over the exam period.• You must book your exams in a way that will allow you 3 attempts

(in case you need them) in each subject and manage your time appropriately.

• Don’t worry too much about booking exams just yet as we will hold an “Exam seminar” closer to exam period to explain it to you fully.

• However, we recommend that you print off your final question lists now and answer them as you go along through the year.

• If you leave it too late then you will have too much to do in and it will be very difficult for you to cover all exam content.

Page 6: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Compulsory Subjects• The compulsory subjects are those you wrote in to your

index. They must all be passed in order to complete the year.

• Anatomy and Histology will be your 2 major subjects but don’t forget Biophysics as this will be your first exam.

• Seminars/practicals and dissections are compulsory (you can miss a max. of 2)

• Lectures are not compulsory but are highly recommended since they outline what you need to know for the exam.

• These degrees require a lot of individual learning- do not rely solely on what you learn in class. You must put in a lot of extra time if you want to succeed.

Anatomy• The head of anatomy is Prof. Grim, the

head of the English parallel is Prof. Šnajdr• First semester: Anatomical terminology,

locomotor apparatus including limbs, basic anatomical concept of vessels and nerves, central lymphatic organs, regional anatomy of limbs including their blood supply and innervation, gastrointestinal system and respiratory system including their blood supply and innervation.

• Second semester: Urogenital system, heart, endocrine system, central and peripheral nervous system, regional anatomy of the head and neck, sensory organs, skin.

• In the seminars you will be taught and tested and be able to look at gross dissections.

• The class tests are often written but may be oral.• It is also very important you learn how to draw-

they don’t want amazing artwork but clear, schematic diagrams.

• Tests are frequent and it is important to stay on top of your work. Remember it is best to answer your final questions as you revise each topic for the tests!

• As you will be handling human samples it is important to buy both a lab-coat and gloves.– If you don’t know where, please ask your guides.

Page 9: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

• There are many recommended text books and the list is available on the website.

• All atlases are valid, it comes down to personal preference.

• When choosing a text-book, Grey’s anatomy for students is highly recommended.

• For Neuroanatomy many students use Snell’s Clinical Neuroanatomy.

• Professor Grim has several books published- they are written in Czech but the diagrams are very useful and labelled in Latin.

• Many students also use flash cards (Greys/Netters) for revision.

Page 10: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

• Your exam is divided in to 3 parts– Slide exam– Dissections – Oral

• The slide presentation is similar to some of your class tests. There will be a PowerPoint containing pictures for you label. You must pass this in order to progress to the next stage of the exam.

• The dissection part of your exam includes bones, organs, cadaver, x-ray and CNS sections.

• In the oral part of your exam you will be examined on 4 topics from the final question list.

• You can go in to the dissection rooms in your free time to study the dissection samples. Please check the available times with your Professors.

Page 11: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Dissections• You will undertake 2 sets of

dissections, 1 in each semester.• They are very useful and a great way

to learn anatomy.• At the end you will be examined

orally on the same cadaver you have studied throughout dissection period.

• You will need your lab coat, lab shoes, gloves and a dissection kit (scalpel and tweezers). A padlock for your locker.

• Atlases are very useful for dissections as is Grant's Dissector text book.

• “Instant Anatomy” is also great for revision.

– Cytology and General Histology• Winter semester

– Special Histology and Embryology• Summer semester

• Your final exam will cover info from both the winter and summer semesters.

• You will study embryology towards the end of the year- it is a difficult but interesting subject. You will be busy with dissections and exams so please make time to study it.

• Attendance of lectures is important as material is covered here that may not be covered in seminars.

• For your seminars, pencil crayons are recommended as there will be several diagrams for you to learn.

• There are several class tests you will need to pass in order to sit the final exam.

• The Histology exam is in 2 parts– The Oral exam– The slide section

• The oral exam is based on your final questions• For the slide portion you will be given several

microscopic slides and asked to describe what you see and what it is.

• You will see these slides in class but you can also view them at selected times in the microscope lab which is on the 1st floor of the histology building. You need to leave your ISIC card as a deposit when taking out the slides.

Page 14: download attachment - PowerPoint Presentation

Biophysics• For biophysics it is extremely

important you buy the 2 required textbooks (1 for lectures and 1 for practicals).

• To be eligible to sit the exam you must attend practical classes and complete the homework.

• The exam will be held in January/February.

• It is important to read up on your practicals before going to the class.
