Welcome to the Audi Magazine Singapore edition.

The star of this issue is the new Audi Q7 (Pg 022). This sets new benchmarks in performance, efficiency and lightweight construction. This is “the great quattro”. The vehicle is 240kg lighter, completely redesigned outside with more room inside. The new Audi Q7 is a true seven-seater. This is one of the most anticipated cars to ever arrive in Singapore and you can see it for yourself at the Audi Centre now.

The next generation Audi R8 will be arriving soon. This car is the direct result of our passion for performance and cutting-edge technology. It represents the direct and uncompromised transfer of racing technology to our road-going supercar. With 600 plus horsepower, the Audi R8 is Vorsprung durch Technik.

2015 is a very special year for Singapore. To celebrate the nation’s 50th year of independence, we have created a very special gift called the “SG50 Time Machine”, which is a first in Singapore.

From October, you will be able to take a “Drive Back in Time” using state-of-the-art virtual reality technology that will transport you back to 1965. Details of the programme are on Pg 009.

Also featured, you’ll find stories of progressive individuals who have found success in their own ways. Read about Loh Lik Peng, the innovative restaurateur and hotelier, Dr. Ng King Kang, the multi-talented writer, and Quincy Quek, our very own golf pro. See how they have pursued their individual careers in innovative ways.

Congratulations to Singapore for its achievements over the last 50 years.

Yours,Jeff ManneringManaging Director, Audi Singapore

Bolt from the blue

Hold on to your seats—the world’s fastest autonomous vehicle has been unveiled. The new all-electric Audi R8 e-tron was unveiled at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Asia in Shanghai in May this year. It can go from zero to 100km/h in an impressive 3.9 seconds, hit a top speed of 250km/h and have a range of more than 450km. Its self-driving “superpower” uses the same technology developed for “Jack”, an Audi A7 Sportback piloted driving concept car that drove on highways from Silicon Valley to the CES in Las Vegas early this year. The next-generation Audi R8 e-tron is a futuristic riff on Jack, as it is a battery-electric sports car with piloted driving capabilities. Key to its power is the combination of optimised space management and advanced cell technology, resulting in a more powerful battery that has reached a record 90kWh. As a testament to the reliability of piloted driving technology, CES Asia attendees took a spin in Jack—the Audi A7 Sportback piloted driving concept car—around the busy streets of Shanghai. At the CES Asia event, Audi Board Member for Technical Development, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Hackenberg also revealed that piloted driving will make its production debut in the next generation of the Audi A8 luxury class sedan, which goes on sale in 2017. The car’s systems can assume control of the car during parking or in stop-and-go traffic on freeways at speeds up to 60 km/h. Audi also plans to electrify its entire product range— from compact car to luxury sedan—and will soon have a plug-in hybrid version of every model. //

with landscapes, buildings, roads and even people, while being immersed in a 360-degree experience. Serving as the app’s virtual tour guide and narrator is Audi brand ambassador Dick Lee. The celebrity singer-songwriter is a giant on the local music scene, and has acted as creative director of the National Day Parade a few times, most recently for the 50th edition this year.

The SG50 Time Machine app will be launched in October at a special event fittingly called A Drive Back In Time. Members of the public will get to experience the SG50 Time Machine using specially-designed headsets and brand-new LG G4 smartphones, while being chauffeured in one of 30 specially commissioned Audi A6 sedans. They will be taken on a route around Singapore’s historic Civic District, starting from The Fullerton Hotel, down City Hall, Beach Road, Nicoll Highway and back. Stay tuned for the event and RSVP in late September. //

Singapore has come a long, long way in just 50 years—and what an amazing ride it’s been. For many, those early years of Independence and progress have been glimpsed only from old films and faded photos. To help Singaporeans step back in time and remember those recollections during the Golden Jubilee, Audi Singapore is launching the SG50 Time Machine, the nation’s first-ever virtual heritage tour app.

Available from October, this smartphone app was developed with cutting-edge 3D and virtual reality technology, and aims to take participants back to Singapore in 1965. “Singapore has made tremendous progress in the 50 years since its independence. Audi will take you back in time to see how far Singapore has developed. This is Audi’s gift to Singapore for the Jubilee celebration,” says Mr. Jeff Mannering, Managing Director, Audi Singapore.

The app uses futuristic virtual reality technology to look back into the past, by creating a whole ‘old’ world of Singapore in 1965, complete

The biggest test-drive of the year took place at Changi Exhibition Centre in Singapore, and what a fantastic ride it was! Over 10 days from 12 to 21 June, the world-renowned Audi Driving Experience 2015 drew more than a thousand participants, earning the title of the biggest driving event yet to be organised by Audi in Singapore.

Under the guidance of professional instructors from Audi, participants had the opportunity to push the latest Audi models to the limit in several thrilling exercises that simulated scenarios not usually experienced in ordinary life. The Driving Experience not only delivered the ultimate adrenaline rush, but also gave drivers the same skills to make daily driving safer and more enjoyable.

Says Mr. Jeff Mannering, Managing Director, Audi Singapore: “The Audi Driving Experience also saw the launch of one of the most important Audi models of this year, the new Audi A6. Besides the design and craftsmanship, the car is really about the drive and the participants got to do just that—get behind the wheel of the Audi A6 and really experience what it is all about.”

For many participants, it was their first time applying the emergency brake, in an exciting exercise that showed off how quickly and safely the new Audi A6’s advanced braking system worked. Participants also had the once-in-a-lifetime experience flooring the accelerator of the high-performance Audi RS 6 Avant and Audi R8 Spyder, during the highly anticipated acceleration drive.

Another highlight was the heart-pumping slalom course in the all-new Audi TT Coupé where drivers learnt first hand the excellent control and responsiveness of the Audi TT coupe around sharp bends and tight turns. On the specially designed track, participants were also able to fully appreciate the power of Audi’s state-of-the-art quattro technology as the car drove confidently on a soap-laden track that was too slippery even to walk on.

Besides the exercises, the Audi Driving Experience also entered the Singapore Book of Records for “Largest Test Drive Convoy”. It was just the feather in the cap for the popular programme, which lets participants take the wheel to experience the performance, power and innovation of Audi. //

Culinary delights and cruising along open roads in Malaysia—that’s what a group of myAudiworld members and their families were treated to on a fun-filled day in July. The Audi Driveaway Adventure kicked off at the Audi Centre in the pre-dawn hours with a drivers’ briefing and some light refreshments, before the convoy headed towards the Tuas Second link as sunrise approached. Once into Malaysia, the convoy regrouped at Gelang Patah R&R for their first proper food stop of the day, a hearty breakfast at Yong Peng. With the sun blazing, an impressive line of Audi cars roared along snaking highways to the destination highlight of the trip: prime durian plantations in Tangkak. The drivers learnt how to spot the famous Mao Shan Wang durian, and tried different types of durians. They also sampled local fruit like mangosteens and coconuts. After bonding with family and fellow Audi enthusiasts, the drivers ended their Malaysian road trip with fond memories of good food and even better driving.

Missed the fun? Sign up at myaudiworld.sg for the final Driveaway Adventure in November, when we head up to Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

A tempest in a park

The hugely popular Audi Classics: Shakespeare in the Park series returned over a weekend in May with the staging of The Tempest at Fort Canning Park. Lovers of the Bard were treated to a visual and dramatic feast under the stars, as this year’s production by the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) featured one of the largest sets ever built in the country. Audi Singapore was once again the sponsor of the highly anticipated event—the eighth so far in a series. From 5,000 people in 1997 to over 20,000 in 2015, Shakespeare in the Park has become one of the most highly anticipated events in Singapore’s arts calendar. Audi Singapore’s long-term sponsorship displays its commitment to make literature accessible, relevant and enjoyable to all. To make a memorable performance even more enjoyable, Audi guests were treated to welcome drinks and canapés at the VIP area, while picnic baskets filled with goodies were given out exclusively to myAudiworld members. //

with the meal. A special red wine—the Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2005—was served to all guests with the main course. Chef David Senia, Executive Chef of Capella Singapore, designed the menu using high-quality and sustainable ingredients. He started his illustrious career at some of the best hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants in France and Spain, before coming to Asia to helm Capella Singapore’s kitchen, where he has worked with famous celebrity chefs from around the world. With his culinary excellence and passion for the finest ingredients, it did indeed turn out to be a night of gastronomic delight. The evening closed on a high note with a fine cognac tasting from Maison Ferrand at Bob’s Bar. //

The year’s most exclusive and premium dinner for myAudiworld was surely the fourth edition of Singapore Fete Le Champagne. myAudiworld members sipped on the world’s finest Champagne at the grand gala dinner, which was held at the ballroom of luxury hotel Capella Singapore on Sentosa. The evening saw Asia’s leading Champagne houses showcase their grandes cuvees; the superior grape extract that is considered the houses’ finest selection. The grandes cuvees were open to all guests for a tasting that was followed by a dinner featuring a specially prepared five-course pairing menu. Each table was assigned a representative from one Champagne house who offered four of their finest bubblies to pair

The new Audi Q7 comes standard with Audi Matrix LED headlights. The combination of camera system and LED lights permits adaptive control of light distribution. When it detects other road users, the system selectively blanks out those areas ahead of the vehicle while the remaining areas remain in high beam mode. That means maximum illumination is always available within system limits.

Can something become greater without growing? It can, so long as we don’t reduce greatness to mere size. People do it particularly well, growing to meet the demands placed on them. So greatness can come from within, from an attitude of mind, an idea, a technology, or a combination of all of these. Like with the new Audi Q7. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development, sums it up for the new Audi SUV flagship as follows: “The new Audi Q7 is a statement of our expertise in lightweight construction, efficiency and assistance systems.”

But one thing at a time: At first glance, the new Audi Q7 displays greatness in that it’s become smaller: by precisely 37 millimetres to a length of 5.05 meters, although the wheelbase is only 8 millimetres shorter. Width-wise, it’s 15 millimetres slimmer than its predecessor at 1.97 metres. Despite this, its interior is now more spacious with extra leg, shoulder and head room. At the same time, it’s highly variable, with the ability to be configured as a true seven-seater.

The new Audi Q7 is worth its weight in the Audi model range—even though it’s actually become lighter. Audi engineers have managed to pare off up to 240 kilograms. The body structure is based on a systematic multi-material design. Tailgate, doors, fenders and hood are made entirely of aluminium. Yet, it goes almost without saying that crash performance and passenger protection remains of the very highest standard.

The new Audi Q7 manages to turn this weight loss into more fun behind the wheel and less fuel consumption. The TFSI engine is up to 28 per cent more efficient. With the V6 TFSI engines, that equates to around 50 grams less CO2 per kilometre. At the same time, the 3.0-litre 245 kW (333 PS) TFSI, for example, propels the Audi Q7 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.3 seconds. The completely revised, 100-kilograms lighter chassis provides a tangible boost in performance. Also optionally available for the first time in the Audi Q7 is all-wheel steering. The newly developed, electric-only, shift-by-wire, eight-speed tiptronic and the 50-millimetre lower centre of gravity, compared to the previous model, make for a smooth and sporty ride.

Greatness in the little things also means less energy input for more lighting efficiency. The new Audi Q7 comes standard with Audi Matrix LED headlights. Thanks to individually activated LEDs,

oncoming traffic can be selectively blanked out from the full power of the beam while the rest of the road remains illuminated within the system limits.

And sometimes greatness lies in the details. On request, the new Audi Q7 offers a host of features from the Audi assistance system, infotainment package and connect services: from Audi virtual cockpit to the optional and newly developed cross-traffic assist that can alert the driver to other vehicles when reversing out of a parking space, to Audi connect with LTE interface, which turns the Audi Q7 into a high-speed WiFi hotspot. Another highlight of the interior is the Bose Sound System with 3D sound.

Greatness isn’t always measured in size. Sometimes things grow without getting bigger: Which is what makes the new Audi Q7 the great quattro. //

Audi Sport quattro S1 >> Audi RS 3 Sportback There is a long and glorious history of five-cylinder engines at Audi. As far back as the Eighties, they were securing wins for the four rings in rally racing. As a chip off the old engine blocks, the five-cylinder, 2.5-litre TFSI® in the new Audi RS 3 Sportback develops 270 kilowatts and does the sprint from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 4.3 seconds. It has been voted International Engine of the Year five times in recent years.

Audi Magazine: Mr. Hollerweger, what is the role of Audi Sport at quattro GmbH?

Heinz Hollerweger: Over the last few years, motorsport has become increasingly pivotal to us because our successes on the racetrack not only bear testament to Vorsprung durch Technik but also inspire passion. After all, the emotional response a brand evokes is of growing importance. Which is why we’re concentrating the promise behind our R and RS models—a thrilling driving experience paired with the ultimate in everyday practicality—under the Audi Sport label. It’s a single source for motorsport and high-performance production models.

And the red rhombus symbolises this promise?Yes. It represents both the four rings’ motor racing credentials

and the systematic transfer of racing technology to the R and RS road-going models. Our aim is to show the world that we are once again significantly boosting this transfer of technology. This is the reason we’re raising the profile of Audi Sport. Just what we can achieve by doing so is already evident in the new Audi R8.

How so?To explain, I need to go back to the first generation Audi R8.

At the time, the production model was first off the drawing board and used as the starting point for the subsequent development of the Audi R8 LMS for customer sport. Since some aspects of the vehicle concept could no longer be changed, compromises had to be made on certain components. To give you one example, an underbody cross member that impeded aerodynamics on the production model became a built-in problem the racer inherited. In the new Audi R8 and new Audi R8 LMS, that and a whole lot of other things were already resolved at the conceptual stage.

So you’re saying you’ve changed which car was developed first? There was no real “first” and “second”, because development

of the two versions coincided. That way, both could continually feed off and learn from each other. In the end, we tested the racer and production model simultaneously on the track and repeatedly called on drivers who compete in the WEC and DTM to give us their input. They see a car’s handling in completely different terms. The result is a virtually unparalleled transfer that extends far beyond components and systems. What customers get at the end of the day is not just racing technology but an unadulterated motorsport experience in their very own car.

Just how good is the finished product—the Audi R8 V10 plus Coupé?I have seldom experienced a car that can match it for the way

its racing DNA profoundly stirs all your senses—from the look of the design, through its spine-tingling performance, all the way to the sound.

What support do you receive from Audi Sport Competence Center Motorsport in Neuburg?

Audi is using the centre as a hub for expertise. My colleagues responsible for customer sport also work in Neuberg and keep in close touch with the engineers who develop the WEC and other prototypes. That knowledge and experience is also channelled into our Audi Sport R and RS models. >>

Heinz Hollerwegerbecome increasingly pivotal to us because our successes on the

function briefly boosts output by a further 22 kilowatts.

the car would have to be refuelled after no more than eight laps. After ten laps, the car still hadn’t come in and disbelief was written across the experts’ faces. No one imagined that our new Audi R8 LMS could be so astonishingly economical. Naturally, those benefits are passed on to the production cars as well. After all, performance and efficiency go together nowadays. And it doesn’t end there. Optimising properties such as aerodynamics and frictional resistance is just as important in racing cars as it is in production models. What’s more, I’m confident that our breakthroughs in racing will also find their way into sporty diesel models in the coming years.

No fewer than seven new RS models have been unveiled over the past two years. And now there’s the new Audi R8. Where do you go from here?

We aim to continue growing. Interest from the market and our customers is strong. So we’ll carry on offering carefully targeted RS models without diluting the exclusivity that is a defining characteristic of our products. RS models are only available and will only ever be introduced where they round out a model range perfectly.

In other words, exclusivity trumps high volumes?Yes, that’s non-negotiable for me. And it’s not just true of our

cars. In the future, we’ll be offering our customers membership of an exclusive new community as well as racetrack experiences with the racing drivers who contributed to the development of their R and RS models. We’re also going to up the Audi exclusive ante and provide new forms of customisation. Audi Sport is a brand on the upswing and I’m very proud to be part of it. //

Is Audi Sport destined to become a kind of innovation incubator at AUDI AG?

I would put it differently. In line with the sporty positioning of our brand, we’re among the first to pick up on innovations and introduce them into series production. Take the Audi laser headlight, for instance. In motorsport, the technology more than proved its mettle in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, which has competed at Le Mans. When we adopted it in the limited edition Audi R8 LMX, it appeared on the street for the first time. Now, both the V10 and Audi R8 V10 plus Coupé can be ordered with laser headlights as optional extras. Our strength and the mainstay of the Audi Sport brand is transferring cutting-edge technology from racing into production cars.

Does that apply to advances in efficiency, too? When we tested the new Audi R8 LMS under racing conditions

on the Nordschleife at the Nürburgring, everyone expected that

More on the topic:Heinz Peter Hollerweger, 61, joined AUDI AG in 1977 directly after graduating in Vienna with a degree in mechanical engineering and has been there ever since. As of April 2014, he holds the reins as managing director of quattro GmbH. A wholly owned subsidiary of AUDI AG, the company sold 15,000 cars last year and has launched seven new RS models bearing the red rhombus badge in the past 24 months alone. www.audi.com

A quick push of the start button and you’re greeted by a low rumble with subtle background notes that anticipate revving and acceleration. Sensing a sports car’s power, acceleration and technology is a wonderful thing. But you have to hear it, too. Part of the joy is hearing the engine ratchet up its progress along the performance curve. The sound of the engine is a key trait in the sports car’s identity, just as much as its design, its ancestry and the brand itself. Few have the artistry it takes to harmonise the intake noise, engine mechanics and exhaust notes to create a distinctive symphony. But Audi has done it yet again. In the new Audi R8 V10 plus Coupé, the V10 makes its presence felt—and heard. //

But once you’ve reached a reasonable cruising speed, the soundtrack to your journey slips into a satisfying hum that is so full-bodied you’d swear each one of the ten cylinders is playing its part. Whenever possible, however, Audi cylinder on demand (soft COD) switches off all but five in order to enhance efficiency.

The Audi R8 V10 plus is capable of sprinting from zero to 200 kilometres per hour in just 9.9 seconds—and propulsion only reaches its climax when the needle touches 330 kilometres per hour. Naturally, the crescendo of the revs at the top end of the range is appropriately triumphant. Sooner or later with braking or shifting down, the full orchestral blast fades out. But the goose bumps remain.

01 The innovative tilting lift allows safe working on the vehicle’s underbody. 02 With the aid of a profile gauge, irregularities in the aluminium surface are identified and subsequently smoothed. 03 Using a gap gauge, workers measure the dimensional accuracy of doors and other add-on parts to within hundredths of a millimetre.

The hand is an important tool also in the finishing shop. Here, workers apply the finishing touches to the body, smoothing out minor imperfections to micro-millimetre accuracy. A wooden profile gauge that they run over the surface identifies defects in the aluminium. But even the gauge can’t reveal every blemish, and that’s when sensitive fingertips are called for. Body-shop worker Jan Koprivnik has them: “Sensitivity can be learned to a certain degree, but you also need talent,” he explains. As well as tactile faculties, precision filing skills are also required in the sanding area. “Some of our workers are trained carpenters and have a great deal of experience in this area. And the contours of the new Audi R8 are much sharper compared to the previous model, so this poses another special challenge,” says Koprivnik, pulling a pair of white gloves over his sensitive fingers.

Workers like Dimitri Thyssen and Jan Koprivnik are central to the manufactory, where man and machine operate as a team. This is particularly evident in the assembly area. Here, workers are assisted by a “driver-less transport system”, or DTS. Compact vehicles carry car bodies into and around the shop completely autonomously. You meet them on the shop floor as you would a colleague fetching coffee. Once the DTS vehicle arrives in the assembly shop, it automatically takes up the correct position in the production sequence. In the specified cycle time of 41 minutes, it travels autonomously on to the next of 15 assembly stations. “Thanks to the innovative navigation system, which is guided dynamically by features in its surroundings and can be reprogrammed when required, the DTS always finds the right way, ensuring a high degree of flexibility in the production process,” says Wagner. “Plus, the DTS is height-adjustable, so our people can work at just the right ergonomic position. This is a big step toward the smart factory and Industry 4.0.” >>

As part of an inconspicuous industrial park surrounded by fields and greenery, a futuristic building complex rises into the Baden-Württemberg sky on 230,000 square metres of space. A diamond-shaped glass cabin bearing the legend “Audi Sport” in big red letters serves as a worthy showroom for the high-performance Audi R8. This is quattro GmbH’s new production facility Audi “Böllinger Höfe” in Heilbronn, where the super sports car is hand-built. Unlike high-volume production, where most work processes are automated, the 492 employees here still perform many tasks by hand. It begins in the body shop, where experienced welders join individual aluminium beams step by step into frame parts that will ultimately form the basic chassis of the new Audi R8. Once all the parts are joined together, they make up the enhanced Audi Space Frame which, thanks to a combination of aluminium and carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), makes the new Audi R8 up to 50 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

“The workers in the body shop have to be able to weld aluminium precisely by hand. That demands a great deal of skill and concentration,” explains manufactory manager Jochen Wagner. One of those workers is fusion welder Dimitri Thyssen, who is currently busy with his colleagues attaching the roof of the new Audi R8 to the Audi Space Frame. The ice-blue flashes and star-shaped sparks reflected in the visor of his welding helmet bring to mind an oversized sparkler. “I’ve been working in R8 production for eight years now. I know exactly what to look out for,” explains Dimitri, his voice raised to carry above the metallic background din. “We are a seasoned team, every movement is practised to a tee,” he adds.

The smart factory of the future harnesses the Internet of Things to optimise flexibility, resource efficiency and ergonomics. The term “Industry 4.0” stands for the fourth industrial revolution, after mechanisation with water and steam power, mass production using electrical energy, and the use of electronics and IT. Worker health and safety plays a central role. Innovations in the assembly shop, such as the ergonomic tilting lift that can pivot 90 degrees in both directions, enable employees to carry out assembly tasks on the underbody without strenuous overhead work.

The people who work in the Audi R8 assembly shop need a good memory. The cycle time here is 41.5 minutes, compared with a mere five minutes in volume production. “The workers have to fit up to 50 parts in a predefined sequence and master up to twelve different tools,” explains Wagner, describing the complex work steps. Installing fittings, wire harnesses, inner panels, engine and transmission, the workers bring the body to life step by step until its metamorphosis into the Audi R8 super sports car is complete. But before leaving the factory on their way to customers around the world, the cars first undergo stringent quality controls. These include analysis in the light tunnel. Here, not even the tiniest scratch or inconspicuous bump escapes the attention of inspector Bianca Kreis. Aided by special inspection lights, her trained eyes and sensitive fingers and palms pick up even minute blemishes on the outside and inside of the car. “What I like particularly about my work is the variety—plus, I love sports cars,” says the trained master mechanic, who has worked at Audi for 25 years. “I look at every little detail to make sure the Audi R8 is defect-free when it leaves the manufactory.”

More information:The “Audi Böllinger Höfe” site covers 23 hectares, about a quarter of the area of the plant in nearby Neckarsulm. It gives Audi leeway to further optimise structures at the Neckarsulm site and consolidate central units of quattro GmbH. At the same time, it has created additional jobs in the region.

Just as Bianca Kreis is responsible for visual quality control, test driver Sadik Morina ensures that everything inside the Audi R8 works as it should. He drives the vehicle over a vibration test track in order to pinpoint unusual noises or other irregularities. “During the subsequent road drive, we test the Audi R8—also at higher speeds—to make sure everything’s OK,” explains Morina. “Then it goes through a final inspection. When it finally leaves the factory, it’s really something special.”

They are all proud to work at a place like this, where hand-built and high-tech go together to create one of the most impressive cars the auto industry has to offer. //

With a hotel and three restaurants opening at the end of August in Sydney, Australia, you can forgive Loh Lik Peng for not being in Singapore on National Day, as he plans to spend it Down Under supervising the team there.

Yet, it has not prevented him from celebrating this milestone. “My family and I have been watching the fighter jets and fireworks every weekend. I feel quite proud that Singapore has turned 50. I hope to see its 100th birthday but that might be a stretch!”

What is definitely not a stretch is his success. Since 2002, and under his portfolio Unlisted Collection, he has opened 20 restaurants and seven hotels across four cities, including Singapore and Shanghai. Separately, he co-owns six restaurants including Meat Smith, which opened, in February this year.

Ask what motivates him, and the answer is somewhat surprising: insecurity. “I need it to do my best work. A lot of projects start with a deep sense of foreboding. It stops me from being complacent.”

Other factors that have led him to where he is today are “being at the right place at the right time, and offering good food and an interesting design concept”.

In fact, no two restaurants in his portfolio are the same. For instance, Esquina is a tapas bar in Chinatown, helmed by

Michelin-starred-chef Jason Atherton, while the award-winning Majestic Restaurant is a modern Cantonese restaurant in a heritage building.

The former corporate litigation lawyer never thought he would make it this far when he opened Restaurant Ember 13 years ago in Hotel 1929. “I thought I’d run the show for a year then go back to law. But it never quite happened,” he laughs, during a chat at Burnt Ends, another popular restaurant he co-owns.

A full plate is what the remainder of 2015 looks like. The 43-year-old is busy overseeing the aforementioned The Old Clare Hotel in Sydney and its three restaurants. On local shores, we can soon dine at Fifth Quarter on Syed Alwi Road, as well as And Co in the National Gallery.

Outside of work, he is very much a family man, spending weekends with his 3½-year-old son and wife. He ferries them around in a white Audi S4 Avant.

Practical and spacious, the car allows him to be able to pile in groceries, toys and all the paraphernalia needed to bring a toddler out. “I bought the S4 because it is a family car but comes with sharp fangs and can go quite fast if I want it to. I also love the security of the four-wheel-drive.” >>

The beauty guru Audrey Mico, Founder, Hollywood Secrets

Students in Singapore of the 1990s will remember that when prom night rolled around, Hollywood Secrets was the place to visit for that makeover that transformed awkward teenagers into glamorous women.

“During prom season, we would receive up to 80 customers a day,” recalls Audrey Mico, who opened her first salon in 1996 at the now-defunct Promenade Shopping Centre, and expanded it to four salons all along Orchard Road.

In 2011, she decided it was time to take a break and closed everything down. Two years later, she reopened Hollywood Secrets in a leafy residential neighbourhood in Bukit Timah. On the menu are services for hair, nails and beauty.

Although it is only one outlet, Mico finds herself busier than ever, preferring to focus on delivering quality service than quantity. And her customers, who are made up of the who’s-who of Singapore, from socialites to politicians and senior business executives, adore her for it.

In fact, she has forged so strong a bond with one of her clients that she gave Mico a pair of coveted tickets to watch the National Day Parade. This will be followed by dinner with close friends at Peony Jade at Clarke Quay, and the weekend spent on a friend’s yacht to celebrate.

“I feel very happy that Singapore is turning 50. I am also proud to be Singaporean, and grateful to have a good and efficient government. But I am a little sad that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is not here to celebrate it with us.”

While Singapore gave her the platform to build her success story, she credits plain old hard work for her results. Some 60 per cent of her clientele today is made up of regulars, whom she takes pride in personally looking after.

“I know them all by name, and they come to Hollywood Secrets with the expectation of seeing me there. It’s important for me to be on the ground to understand their needs.”

This means the 50-something-year-old can spend up to 10 hours a day in the salon. But when she needs to run around, she gets behind the wheel of her white Audi A3 and zips off. She decided on an Audi in 2011 because her husband is a fan.

“It is beautifully designed, powerful, has a good engine and solid body. I feel secure driving it,” Mico explains. The couple is already thinking of the next car to buy and her money is on an Audi, but this time, a cabriolet. “After driving an Audi, I don’t think my husband will buy any other brand of car.” >>

This National Day, Andre Huber will be watching the first part of the parade on television, before bringing his family of four out to catch the fireworks.

On the career front, his business has also lit a spark. Come mid-September, the Dempsey Road-located retail operations of Huber’s butchery and grocer, which he co-founded with his brother Ryan in 2007, will be moving across the street to a space three times its current size.

“Expect a wider range of groceries, as well as elements such as a cabinet where you can dry-age meats of your choice, a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes, and a playground to occupy the kids as the parents dine at the al fresco bistro,” says Andre.

Less visible to the regular customer is this wholesale business that supplies premium quality meats to 700 restaurants in Singapore. It is an arm of the company that is managed by Andre, and has been active since day one.

In fact, he will tell you that chief among the high points of the past eight years is Huber’s being named Gourmet Distributor of the Year at the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence 2015.

This follows a whole string of other accolades such as Best Butcher, awarded by Expat Living in 2015, and the Singapore Prestige Brand Award 2014.

“We’ve made two times more profit than I had expected to at the start,” says the 35-year-old, who is a Business graduate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Among the factors he attributes to Huber’s success include having a “family culture style of business”. In addition to Ryan’s involvement, the other major driving force is their father, Ernst, who has spent a lifetime in the butchery trade, and today can still be seen in the retail outlet watching over operations.

Andre also points to how they never compromise on quality, and always aim to “do things better”. “We just want to run an honest business and provide good food to Singapore. The satisfaction expressed by our customers is very gratifying,” he says.

Manning the wholesale business involves a lot of running around, which he does with a white Audi Q5 purchased in 2011. In addition to the beautiful styling, he likes how its two-litre turbo engine is powerful yet fuel-efficient.

But more importantly, Andre was seeking a bit of self- pampering when he bought his Audi Q5. “My previous car was due to be scrapped. Since I had been working so hard, I thought I would give myself a treat.” >>

This year is a special one for Dr. Ng King Kang. The writer is launching his 19th book in August, and just like his birth country Singapore, he is also turning 50, albeit 15 days later.

To mark this milestone year, he is taking off to South America to celebrate what he calls “KK50”, and will also be cheering Singapore on from there.

Dr. Ng feels fortunate that the country has enjoyed five decades of peace and progress—something that should not be taken for granted “especially when many other parts of the world are still suffering from poverty and war”.

No surprise then that life in Singapore is a recurring theme in many of his books, as are his reflections of life and his travel experiences—the latter a result of his love for exploring the world.

For instance, his latest book is a 200-strong collection of his weekly columns that he pens for a local newspaper, in his capacity as a senior correspondent.

In it, expect to find his thoughts on family—a theme he has been writing a lot about in the past five years living in Singapore and love. “I only write about something if I find it worth dwelling on; it must have a message,” he explains.

But perhaps the most indisputable marker of his success is that all his tomes, which he self-publishes under the catchy name of KangCuBine Publishing, have made it onto the Kinokuniya best-seller list of Chinese books.

“Writing is the only thing I can do,” he admits. “It feels wonderful when readers contact me to share their thoughts and tell me how reading my book has helped them in their lives.”

Books aside, Dr. Ng has also written about 100 songs for a variety of artists such as Hong Kongers Jacky Cheung and Gigi Leung, and Singaporean Tanya Chua. While most of them were ballads inspired by his life experiences, he has also penned National Day as well as movie theme songs.

Also symbolic of his success is the black Audi TT he drives, which he bought in 2010 as a birthday present for himself. He chose it because he felt it represented him. “It has a very strong character—stylish and vain—just like me.”

He also favours it for its cute and sporty aesthetic. An added bonus is the excellent service Audi provides, which always makes him feel respected as a customer. After five years, the car is still in very good condition and he proudly drives it everywhere he goes. “It’s definitely a car to see and be seen in”. //

Renowned local professional golfer and Audi Ambassador Quincy Quek has his eye on the road ahead of him in Asia’s professional golf circuit. Quincy, who turned pro in 2009, finished fourth at the Indonesian Open in December. He is competing in the Yulongwan Yunnan Open on the PGA Tour China Series in Kunming in August, and is aiming to play in the US. Right now, he is the only Singaporean competing full-time in China.

Watch him play on the course though, and you would be forgiven for thinking that Quincy has got to where he is now all on his own. After all, many people tend to think that golf is a solitary affair. But the 28-year-old says he could not have made it on the golf course without the support of a number of people and organisations. For instance, Audi has been a sponsor since 2009. He says: “Audi has been very supportive and I’m very grateful.”

Behind the scenes, one key person who has been helping Quincy over the last five years has been his physiotherapist, K. H. Poon. Says Quincy: “Poon is specialised and well-informed about golf injuries. He knows about the biomechanics of golf, so when you are trying to achieve outcomes in your swing, like a certain angle or a body position, he will assess your move and say the shoulder blade is too stiff or the hip joint is not moving.”

For instance, Quincy previously used his hands, instead of his core strength, on his swing. He says: “The results were not consistent. Poon worked on my lower back to get the muscles moving. And it helped. Golfers are like race cars; we have to be highly tuned and are sensitive to aches and

pains. We use our whole body with just one swing. Poon helps to rectify those pains, and my sessions with him are like ‘maintenance work’.”

Another individual he has been working with is his sport psychologist, Lim Han Ee. Quincy, who started attending sessions with Lim in 2012, says: “Sports psychologists know how to help your mind get ‘quieter’ on the golf course. When you are playing at a tournament, there are a lot of distractions that you can’t control, such as how you respond to shots or even a gust of wind that blows away your ball.”

Adding that he has learnt breathing exercises to calm himself down on the course, he says: “Han Ee helps to keep my mental state in check, and teaches me how to manage my emotions, such as negativity and self-doubt. Sportsmen will always put pressure on ourselves, so it’s about acknowledging that the pressure is there. Once you start acknowledging it, that ‘cloud’ will start shrinking and you will perform.”

When he is in Singapore, he practises at several golf courses, including Tanah Merah Country Club (TMCC), of which he is a member. He says: “TMCC is one of the few clubs with a grass driving range. At most clubs, you hit off mats, which isn’t good for your wrist. I also like it because the range is not too crowded.” He also practises at clubs like National Service Resort & Country Club, where he is given support in the form of free rounds and range balls.

Over coffee at TMCC, Quincy reflects on the “team” behind him, and says: “Without a doubt, they have all helped my game, which has become better. I am very appreciative of that.” //

Quincy has been an Audi Ambassador since 2009—a partnership that supports Audi’s commitment to inspire confidence and excellence in young athletes.

There is a choice of new colours along with the option of a roof dome painted in a contrasting hue to give your car that personal touch.

Further customisation is naturally possible with two design lines offering a myriad of exterior and interior combinations. The Audi Genuine Accessories programme offers other options, including a comprehensive equipment package made available for the first time. For instance, the active kit adds body enhancements such as an aprons front and rear plus wheel designs galore.

The improvements are not just skin deep.Under the bonnet is a brand new engine: Audi’s first three-

cylinder direct-injection petrol motor, the 1.0 TFSI uses 13 per cent less petrol and emits 12 per cent less carbon dioxide compared to the old 1.4 TFSI model. This means a fantastic drive that is more efficient, with a higher output, and lower emissions.

Yet, the updated A1 Sportback is no less sporty and agile. A new electromechanical steering guarantees the most appropriate driver feedback at all speeds, and the newly created sport equipment line offers a stiffer tuning that is also more comfortable than in the previous model.

As an option is Audi’s drive select dynamic handling system, which offers different driving modes and the ESC Electronic Stabilization Control with torque vectoring.

Of course, all the mod cons are at your fingertips, including a high-end MMI navigation plus infotainment system, Bluetooth interface and rear parking sensors.

Ticking all the boxes for the urban professional, the new Audi A1 Sportback offers fun and versatility in a compact five-door package, with Audi’s legendary quality to boot. //

Audi is headed to the moon with their entry in the Google

Lunar XPRIZE competition. For the first time, Audi is bringing

the four-wheel drive technology that will be, literally, out of this

world. Working in collaboration with the German team of the

Part-Time Scientists, a group of around 35 scientists and engineers,

Audi’s primary role is to provide these brilliant minds with the

technical know-how to create an unmanned space rover that

will travel to the moon.

“What matters to us is a high level of engineering ingenuity, not

the prize money,” says team member Karsten Becker, an electronics

specialist. With the rules of the competition stipulating that

90 per cent of the mission costs must be funded by private sources,

and given Audi’s stellar reputation in pushing the boundaries of

automobile engineering, this is perhaps a match made in heaven.

The partnership has since resulted in the birth of the Audi

lunar quattro, a versatile space rover that leverages the marque’s

renowned tech innovations to improve on the group’s previous

prototypes. Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive technology and expertise

in self-piloting systems will enable the solar-powered rover to

overcome obstacles as it navigates along the moon’s rugged

terrain, while the automaker’s expertise in lightweight design

will help create a final version of the vehicle that weighs less than

35 kilograms. Audi is also providing assistance with rigorous

testing and quality assurance, making sure that every component

of the rover can withstand the extreme climate conditions in

space—temperatures on the moon can soar up to a searing

300 degrees Celsius.

Established in 2007, the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition

aims to inspire the world’s sharpest minds to develop cost-effective

and innovative methods of space travel. The Part-Time Scientists,

who are also backed by partners such as NVIDIA and the Austrian

Space Forum, have been one of the standout groups in the

competition so far, having received Milestone Prizes amounting

to US$750,000 for their work on vehicular mobility and optical

systems and sensors.

The Audi lunar quattro will make its way to the moon onboard

a rocket before 31 December 2017 and the trip is expected to take

around five days while costing a cool US$26 million. Its targeted

touchdown zone is near the historic landing site of the Apollo 17—

the last manned mission to the moon by NASA.

The challenge for the rover? Travel at least 500 metres on the

moon’s surface and transmit hi-definition video and images back to

Earth. Sound easy to you? Think again. There’s a reason why Google

is awarding the first team that is able to complete the task a

whopping US$20 million (S$27.7 million). //

A transport system for the nation

As Singapore celebrates its 50th year of independence, it is already designing a transport system for the next 50 years with an ambitious blueprint it calls Smart Mobility 2030. Under this grand plan, a commuter who wants to drive will simply call up a vehicle from a car-sharing scheme he or she has subscribed to. On the way to the destination, everything from traffic signals to road signs will “talk” to the car to help ensure a safe and efficient trip. At times, when the driver needs to take a break or attend to an urgent call, the vehicle will seamlessly take control. There’s still a lot of work to be done before this vision is realised, but the exciting journey has already started.

Self-driving cars have been making the news for a few years now. But Audi has tested piloted driving over the last 15 years. Earlier this year, it unveiled the Audi A7 piloted driving concept car, which drove itself 885 kilometres from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas. In doing so, Audi became the first carmaker to test drive in real-world conditions for long distances. The aim is to fundamentally change the way people drive their cars—and improve it—by relieving the stress of driving and offering better safety. The plan has been to use efficient and complex technologies that do not take up space in the car, add any extra weight nor use extra energy. For Audi, piloted driving is the next logical step in the development of a car over the coming years.

PiloteddrivingA C Hyperloop

What if you could get from Los Angeles to San Francisco—a distance of 1,200 kilometres—in just 30 minutes? And get there via a passenger pod that is thrust through large tubes? That’s the idea behind Hyperloop, a solar-powered, high-speed, cross-country transport system, which uses electromagnetic motors. Proposed by Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who owns Tesla, the theory has yet to work in real life. But plans are already underway to build a test track in California next year.

Audi, for one, has been developing its own renewable energy, in the form of synthetic fuels called Audi e-fuels. These e-fuels, including e-gas, e-gasoline, e-ethanol and e-diesel, have the potential to be the fuels of the future. Amazingly, they are made with only water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and specialised single-cell microorganisms. Currently being tested in production cars at the Audi headquarters in Germany, the fuels have extremely low carbon dioxide emissions. It may be early days still, but Audi researchers have found that cars using Audi e-fuels show a carbon dioxide footprint that’s just as good as that of a battery-operated car powered by wind or solar energy.
